to think our neighbour is spying on me through a wall?

We live in a semi but a semi that backs onto another house, so our entire back wall is another house's entire back wall IYSWIM. So upstairs we share a wall on our bedroom, the landing and our bathroom.

The only noise I ever hear from their house is that noise of a pull switch light cord. And the only time I ever hear it is just after I go to the bathroom at night before I go to bed. Whatever the time. I never hear it before or after. Without fail it is just after I leave the bathroom. I go to bed at very random times (DH works away...). it could be 8pm, it could be 1am. Whatever time it is, I always hear that cord go within 20 seconds of me leaving the bathroom...

Uuummmmmm AIBU to think I might be being spied on..??!!! How do I find out for sure?!!

Motherofall that was this thread which I was reminded of reading here.

V odd Gnocci! And odder that I and the woman who sits next to me at work both had gnocchi for tea last night (having not eaten it for months!) {twilight zone theme tune}

oooohhhhyes · 11/07/2012 23:43

OOh also delurking and waiting to hear plumber's opinion. Agree re cuppa / cleavage to bribe him into compliance...

motherofallhangovers · 12/07/2012 00:41

DP can't think of a logical explanation either, he's baffled too!

Interested to hear what the plumer says!

quoteunquote · 12/07/2012 00:43

I want to see photos of the inside off your loft, nosy builder here, trying to imagine what the boxing in is.

motherofallhangovers · 12/07/2012 00:44

People do do things you wouldn't expect. I know someone who moved the wall of their council flat (in a converted house) one foot into the other flat, when he knew it was between tenants. His flat was tiny and he knew it was only a partition wall. He knocked the whole thing down, rebuilt it, painted it and left through the front door! shock

No one was any the wiser as when the new person came to view it, they would have seen it with the new wall.

The cheek of some people is unbelievable! (I am secretly quite impressed he actually did it though!)

msrantsalot · 12/07/2012 01:53

yeah, light a candle in the bathroom and dont bother with the light switch

Pedigree · 12/07/2012 08:12

Wasn't it in The Lovely Bones when they know that the murdered had previously killed his landlady by breaking a flimsy partition wall that separated what originally was her single house?

I read the darned book eons ago, but I still check for partition walls if I am chcking a new house.

valiumredhead · 12/07/2012 08:15

I have read TLB twice and I can't remember that bit!

Birdsgottafly · 12/07/2012 08:28

He killed his Landlord and occassional lover Sophie, there was a partition mentioned, abstractly.

motherofallhangovers · 12/07/2012 09:02

Hey! Stop freaking the OP out, she won't sleep!!

And I need her to keep talking to us because I have to know what the answer to the mystery is!

Pedigree · 12/07/2012 09:21

To be honest, I was quite amused by this thread until I got to the partition bit, if the only thing that separates your house from the neighbours is a wall as strong as a thick piece if styrofoam, well... I would be asking if this can be replaced or puting a huge cabinet against it.

Obviously I was quite freaked out by the book, I have moved twice since then and looked at an average of 20 houses per move. Admitedly, I never found one if these walls separating two different houses.

Pedigree · 12/07/2012 09:24

But since we are talking about this partition, I wouldn't worry about the 'click' , you can be hearing any switch around the other house.

Pedigree · 12/07/2012 09:27

Bl*y hell! Karma in action! My boiler has just turned on and I am alone in the house!

HipHopOpotomus · 12/07/2012 09:33

Haven't read whole thread - but just wanted to say the ONLY noise I hear from my neighbours (in block of flats with neighbours left, right & above) is the upstairs neighbours bathroom light pull. And it is VERY loud and almost has an echo.

It's quite odd. I think there must be a pipe or channel in the wall that the noise travels down, especially as the upstairs neighbours light pull will obviously be on their ceiling, so mile away from me downstairs and in another room.

NotGeoffVader · 12/07/2012 10:06

I've only just found this thread and spent ages reading through it. I am really keen to know what the outcome is. Sounds as though there is something amiss with the plumbing/shared wall at the very least.

And those of you with lofts that have never been into them - have you no curiosity? I am a nosey old gimmer and when we moved in to our place I was up to the loft like a rat up a drainpipe to see what was there. Sadly it was not boarded, had no insulation or windows and had been used to stash old mouldy carpet.

Merrin · 12/07/2012 10:21

I wonder if the neighbour knows you are on to him and did some quick crafty boxing in in the loft to hide that he was actually using it for his train/porn/other odd hobby or collection. Are there tiny models of trolls about the floor?

shewhowines · 12/07/2012 11:46

I wondered that too, what with all the DIY going on lately.

Babylon1 · 12/07/2012 13:09

Lol @ the poster whose boiler just switched itself on!!! Did you do a little bit of poo?? I would have I think!!!! Grin

Pedigree · 12/07/2012 13:14

No, but I'm looking over my shoulder as I write...

Pedigree · 12/07/2012 13:14

YOu know all that drilling the other day? have you considered the possibility he was just finishing fitting your cosy loft?

Proudnscary · 12/07/2012 13:18

Nah, the drilling was him making a super duper high tech spying contraption.

I'm sure it is plumbing/electrical stuff Gnocci, but I would be freaked too!

Well done for spooking the bejeezus out of half of Mumsnet. That's quite a feat considering what a bunch of hard-nosed harridans we are (according to the Daily Mail)

ASillyPhaseIAmGoingThrough · 12/07/2012 13:19

I thought the sudden DIY when op and Dh were out were strange. I wonder if his camera saw op checking and he then closed up the gap.
