to think our neighbour is spying on me through a wall?

We live in a semi but a semi that backs onto another house, so our entire back wall is another house's entire back wall IYSWIM. So upstairs we share a wall on our bedroom, the landing and our bathroom.

The only noise I ever hear from their house is that noise of a pull switch light cord. And the only time I ever hear it is just after I go to the bathroom at night before I go to bed. Whatever the time. I never hear it before or after. Without fail it is just after I leave the bathroom. I go to bed at very random times (DH works away...). it could be 8pm, it could be 1am. Whatever time it is, I always hear that cord go within 20 seconds of me leaving the bathroom...

Uuummmmmm AIBU to think I might be being spied on..??!!! How do I find out for sure?!!

Sparky ooh spooky. Ghostie?

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 04/07/2012 19:01

I can't remember where I heard/read it but this quote is very true

'The scariest noise is when you are sitting alone in the house and you hear your toilet being flushed'

littleducks · 04/07/2012 19:01

how long have you lived there? have you never been in loft before? how can you not know about the window????

maybe renovating your loft was what your neighbour was doing drilling yesterday Wink

FutTheShuckUp · 04/07/2012 19:13

soooooooooo..... not sure what to do next!!!???

Get on with your life and stop obsessing over nothing at all. Or visit your GP about your anxiety/paranoia issues

rufus5 · 04/07/2012 19:16

Ah Fut, don't be such a spoilsport. This thread is the best entertainment I've had since my waters broke [read 'exploded'] during a contraction and almost drowned the midwife!! Let's not be sensible and end the fun!

oshuk · 04/07/2012 19:22

Does the bit where the hole is go up into your loft space. Have you looked for any sign of disturbance on the floor that would be above the hole. Have you shown DH this thread?

flostar · 04/07/2012 19:25

Good point littleduck.
How could you not know about the velux window in the loft? You can easily see them from outside! Not having a go, just confused.
Did dh see the hole near the shower box from the loft?
Hope you feel better about it all now.

BelleTheBeatnik · 04/07/2012 19:38

Just caught up with this thread! I'm anxious to hear the conclusion now. Grin

Obviously I hope there's very mundane and reasonable explanation for all this, for the OP's sake as boring as that would be!

gnocci · 04/07/2012 20:08

You cant see the velux from the front of the house, it is sort of to the side and there is a sort of overhang so you wouldnt be able to see it from below unless you were really far away from the house or in a helicopter I guess?!

The sound is NOT THE TOILET CISTERN. Not sure where people have got that from. I have heard it (the light pull cord from next door) whether OR NOT I use the toilet before bed. It is 100% absolutely definitely a light pull cord and it comes from the house attached to ours.

I dont think we will ever get to the bottom of it!

I think there is an echo.

TheSpokenNerd · 04/07/2012 20:20

Sallying nobody established anything! Stop spoiling the fun! Gnocci was worried there might be a spy hole in the wall...the attic was ONE avenue which she has explored and we can now discount.

Sallyingforth · 04/07/2012 20:30

Gnocci you did say that the sound didn't happen when the cistern wasn't flushed.
Anyway I don't think this is going anywhere. I'll leave you to it.

garlicbutt · 04/07/2012 20:50

Grin Grin Grin

Well, Gnocci, your estate agent was obviously shit as he failed to inform you of the almost-converted loft (and charge you for it). So I'm not sure I'd believe him about where your house was split, either!

How long have you lived there? Confused

garlicbutt · 04/07/2012 20:52

Just a random thought. Did DH test whether the bathroom light switch affects the loft light?

gnocci · 04/07/2012 21:06

Sally but then if you read my post I did flush it a bit later and it didnt happen then either..!!! So umm....?!

Lived here 8/9 months.

No I dont think he tested loft/bathroom light together.

Oh btw it was my mum who turned the shower off!!!!! Or rather, she let DS pull the cord!!! Phew!

Migsy1 · 04/07/2012 21:29

How about you just go round to your neighbour and tell him/her about the mystery???

oooggs · 04/07/2012 21:30

Freaky!! Wonder what it is!

perceptionreality · 04/07/2012 21:33

Has it happened today gnocci?

gnocci · 04/07/2012 22:03

I've been at work all day.

He's still drilling over there though - lots of banging about.

Tonight I am going to send DH in and then listen carefully after he is done. Then I will go in and act as usual. See if the sound happens after he's been in or only after I've been in haha.

garlicbutt · 04/07/2012 22:06

Actually, if your neighbour's doing noisy work at 10pm, you've the perfect excuse to go round and have a chat about it.

pumpkinsweetie · 04/07/2012 22:08

Oooh we should find out soon then, what are you going to do in the unlikely event the neighbours are spying on you?

It is sounded more and more weird tbh, i do hope there is a more reasonable explaination to it all in the end

gnocci · 04/07/2012 22:08

Trouble is garlic he isnt our neighbour as such, the house backs onto another house. Therefore to get to his (or her?!) house we need to go all the way out of our street, all the way around onto another street and find the house. In fact I wouldnt know which house it is!!!

OP posts:
pumpkinsweetie · 04/07/2012 22:11

Thats a good point garlicbutt-i have an idea, why don't you knock round in the morning and ask to use the loo because yours is not working?Grin, and have a sneaky peak whilst you are in the bathroom, of course the neighbours could say 'no', but it would be weird not to let a 7m preggars lady the courtesy to use your looGrin

garlicbutt · 04/07/2012 22:15

It doesn't matter. S/he's banging around at bedtime and it's making a racket in your house. You're completely entitled to go round and tell 'em it's disturbing you, can they stop at 8pm, how long is it going to continue and so forth. No need for subterfuge! If they turn out to be civil, you could ask to have a look. It's fairly natural to be curious.

Find your house on Google Maps, you'll be able to get the address (and probably a photo) from there :)

gnocci · 04/07/2012 22:15

Not sure I want to go into a complete strangers house who might be a wierdo peephole spying axe murderer!!!!

I dont think i'll ever get to the bottom of this, I will just get used to having him pull his light switch upon me leaving my bathroom!
