to think our neighbour is spying on me through a wall?

We live in a semi but a semi that backs onto another house, so our entire back wall is another house's entire back wall IYSWIM. So upstairs we share a wall on our bedroom, the landing and our bathroom.

The only noise I ever hear from their house is that noise of a pull switch light cord. And the only time I ever hear it is just after I go to the bathroom at night before I go to bed. Whatever the time. I never hear it before or after. Without fail it is just after I leave the bathroom. I go to bed at very random times (DH works away...). it could be 8pm, it could be 1am. Whatever time it is, I always hear that cord go within 20 seconds of me leaving the bathroom...

Uuummmmmm AIBU to think I might be being spied on..??!!! How do I find out for sure?!!

Sallying where ha OP said that? Confused

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 04/07/2012 12:13

I suspect ghosts and/or werewolves. Leave a steak in the bathroom and if it's gone in the morning you have your answer. If it's not then phone the lady from Poltergeist, she will probably accept payment in the form of steak.

Migsy1 · 04/07/2012 12:36

Look in the bathroom mirror at midnight and say the "Our Father" backwards. If your eyes start to look demonic then it is definitely evil spirits trying to freak you out.

Alternatively, drill a hole through the wall and put a spy camera into next door's bathroom so you can see what they are doing in there. I think you can buy them from Aldi sometimes.

recall · 04/07/2012 12:40

gnocci - whats happening then ? DH back ? asked Mum about shower switch ?

Badgersnatch · 04/07/2012 12:42

I think you can buy them from Aldi sometimes.

Priceless.

Have you thought about getting a webcam and poking it through the loft hatch to see if there are any comings and goings?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/07/2012 12:54

You know i was thinking about this thread last night as I was coming out of my toilet... 20 seconds is a long time! In 20 seconds I managed to walk downstairs, through my hallway, through my living room and into my dining room. How do you still hear it after 20 seconds?? It must be really loud!

FredWorms · 04/07/2012 13:04

coconutty has the perfect solution. The sign thing. Do it.

Cheriefroufrou · 04/07/2012 13:11

"Cherie, did they live in a place beginning with B?" nope, G

have you taken the mirror off the wall to see if its actually a boarded up room behind there, I think its the candyman!

Cheriefroufrou · 04/07/2012 13:12

Amazing that's prob why she only hears it at night, in the day time she prob leaves the bathroom and goes straight downstairs and starts making noise in the kitchen etc so its not as obvious as at night when she's just lying in bed!

Merrin · 04/07/2012 13:15

If someone is watching you perhaps you dont want to let on that you know so you dont give them a chance to remove the evidence?

Shutupanddrive · 04/07/2012 13:17

Any update op?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/07/2012 13:25

Oh yeah...

Funny sounds come from the ceiling in my family home after lights are turned off. It's an electrical problem they've never sorted out. This is probably the reason.

If you were particularly paranoid and needed to research, why don't you call on your neighbour and ask to see his bathroom? You could say...um...you're thinking of having some work done but first need to check the structural integrity of the the wall from his side in order to check that the alteration won't inconvenience him in any way. If he asks further, you could smile and say that the builder insisted upon it, but you don't know the details. You're just trying to be a responsible neighbour.

Then you can see what kind of light switch/pull it is, pull it yourself, and hear what kind of sound it makes. You could also look at the wall. But I would go with your DH so he can stand at the door chatting in a blokish way...

flostar · 04/07/2012 16:12

Where is she?! Getting desparate to know whats happened next! ;)

To repeat recall ... whats happening then ? DH back ? asked Mum about shower switch ?

We neeed to know!
Hope you are ok.

Can only presume gnoccis DCH is inspecting hole and filling it in.

frustratedpants · 04/07/2012 18:12

*DH not DCH

gnocci · 04/07/2012 18:24

Blimey you lot are so demanding!!!

Ok, not had chance to speak to my mum yet as she will be finishing work around now and usually calls after 7pm.

DH has been up in the loft (while I was at work) and WOW it's all like carpeted and stuff, with a light and a velux window!!!! I may have to move in there! Apparently it looks "cosy"..... hmmmmm! Anyway, no sign of any life and it isn't shared with next door. He couldnt see any holes.

soooooooooo..... not sure what to do next!!!???

Sallyingforth · 04/07/2012 18:27

Do you need to do anything?

Bigwheel · 04/07/2012 18:33

That sounds werid, it being all cosy up there. Are you sure there's no way you can get though from next door, I don't know - a false wall or something, bricks that can be taken out and replaced?

ShatnersBassoon · 04/07/2012 18:46

There's no access to your loft other than from your house, there are no peepholes in the bathroom. You're not being spied on. You don't need to do anything now.

Sallyingforth · 04/07/2012 18:47

Unless I've misread the 16 pages of posts, you had two problems.

  1. The noise. I think we have established that is just a harmless noise from the cistern.
  2. The light/shower switch??? If that's not working correctly you need to get it checked out.
I don't understand the repeated references to next door. Your DH has established that there's no connection through the loft.

We stayed in an old thatched cottage once on holiday - ds3 was about 9 months. I got up in the night to him, about 3am, and he wanted a bottle. On way downstairs i heard a definite click, like a radio being turned off. When i got in the kitchen there was an old radio with a turn-dial - right next to the microwave. I was really freaked.

I tried it in the morning, it clicked just like i'd heard, but the batteries were dead.

I have hated thatched cottages ever since - couldn't wait to get away from there.
