To think MNers should make a stand and stop this competitive gift giving to primary teachers?

When did this nonsense begin? Is it really necessary? Just stop for crying out loud, they do get paid.

It will only get worse and worse unless people start to rein things in. AIBU to think we (MN) should change the trend?

Um, I always spend ages trying to find something and end up spending a tenner but a fiver between the teacher and the ta is easier some years for me. I don't think it should be all clipboardy and exclusive tho.

Flossiechops · 23/06/2012 22:05

Genuinely don't get all the fuss. Give if you want and don't if you don't, it's simple really surely? I work as a nurse and we do often get boxes of chocs/ biscuits but the best thing of all are cards or letters wrote with thanks. Nothing makes us feel better than that Smile

ariadne1 · 23/06/2012 22:08

Hear Hear OP. I wonder when teachers will start being taxed on a presumed value of gifts.

Destrier · 23/06/2012 22:11

A lot of you just sound jealous...

scottishmummy · 23/06/2012 22:13

oh do elaborate
jealous you say
of what?

LoopyLoopsCorgiPoops · 23/06/2012 22:15

So what happens between primary and secondary? Do your older kids and their teachers suddenly get less important to you, or do you breath a sigh of relief that the gift-giving expectation is lifted? Putting my money on the latter.

OP posts:
Destrier · 23/06/2012 22:16

Of the teachers getting presents...

And maybe you don't get anything in your job...

LoopyLoopsCorgiPoops · 23/06/2012 22:16

Some of the less imaginative people on this thread are entirely failing to see things from the point of view of the child with no gift to give.

EvilTwins · 23/06/2012 22:17

Surely it's that in primary, kids have one teacher - all day every day. In Secondary, they have loads. Even form tutors are seen for, perhaps, half an hour a day. There's not the same relationship.

Destrier · 23/06/2012 22:17

Secondary students can make their own choices/ usually have pocket money. Parents generally make the decisions for/ with primary children. And are much more likely to fund the gift.

scottishmummy · 23/06/2012 22:17

oh yes
that's it
god how didn't anyone see it
you're fuckin genius

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 23/06/2012 22:18

HipHopOpotomus · 23/06/2012 22:19

I recall feeling very proud as a child, giving thank you presents to my primary school teachers. For that reason if nothing else I will do it for my dc. I am very thankful for all they give us.

I agree no need to be competitive though.

Destrier · 23/06/2012 22:20

Glad you understand now scotishmummy

Well it takes one to know one. You'll know whether my statement might apply to you or not, MrsDeVere

HipHopOpotomus · 23/06/2012 22:21

Should add I don't recall what I gave. We were very poor so I don't imagine it cost much.
