MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 18/06/2012 21:18

Have just borrowed it off a friend to see what all the fuss is about.

I just posted my (rather kinky) recommendations on sgb's other thread, so thought I'd put them here too just in case anyone wants ideas:
Aishling Morgan - my favourite one is Deep Blue but all are good. Delightfully dirty with good stories. Look out for the 17th C Devon bodice rippers.
Penny Birch - modern day stories, written as if autobiographical by a really fun and likeable character.
Ann Rice writing as A N Roquelar (sp?) - sleeping beauty as you've never heard it before...

fuzzpig · 18/06/2012 21:20

Dick Lit :o that is inspired!

Also love your name VK, I think vermicious knids are so cute in TGGE! But I've always wanted to know, are they pronounced Nids, or Kuh-Nids? I've always leaned toward the latter, myself...

TheVermiciousKnid · 19/06/2012 08:29

Thank you! Blush I have always leaned towards K-nid too, Fuzzpig. I think that's what it says in the book. :)

Snowballed · 19/06/2012 12:09

Freddy that's a very good point about Twilight franchise letting it happen. The original fanfic (which is identical barring names) is still posted on the Internet and is covered with pictures from Twilight. I wonder if they tried to stop it being published ?

Chocobo · 19/06/2012 12:48

I am surprised no-one has mentioned all the head cocking yet (and no that is not a euphemism). I thought he must have something wrong with his neck.

freddy05 · 19/06/2012 14:06

Snowballed - you can be sure that the producers of Sherlock wouldn't be letting someone do this with one of the many similar fan fics based on that!

valiumredhead · 19/06/2012 15:36

I only managed to get half way through the Kindle sample then deleted -it is dire!

cakeymakey · 19/06/2012 15:55

Its earth shatteringly awful......!

belgina · 19/06/2012 16:05

I liked them, read them in 48h a few months ago. They're not quality literature or anything, but imo fun light entertainmen. It doesn't alwsys have to be quality or high brow. I like variety Grin

valiumredhead · 19/06/2012 16:12

I definitely like light hearted but dear God it was soooo bad!

OracleInLeCoracle · 19/06/2012 16:16

I enjoyed it, I felt like I shouldnt because it is tripe, but its funny.

celebmum · 19/06/2012 16:27

True it's not exactly the best written trilogy I've read but it's easy to read/pool side material! I've just finished the 3rd book and although it's still abit cringe worthy at times there's a teeny bit more to the story that makes the first 2books make more sense! Wink

moanymum · 19/06/2012 16:36

I dind't expect to enjoy them, but was hooked almost from the start. Finished the first one last night and immediately downloaded the second - which does have more of a story. I'm not fussy, will read most genres, but haven't read anything this addictive in ages! Had the kindle out at lunchtime and my colleague is telling people I was sitting with a glazed look in the corner! Seriously can't put them down.

theodorakis · 19/06/2012 16:46

I like shite for the sake of shite. I love my old childhood Sweet Valley High books, Jane Green, Enid Blyton's mystery books (not shit) and chick lit. it is comforting and I love and need need them along with Miss Read who has weathered many a storm with me along the years. I also read a lot of other stuff that is more "worthy". However, I recently tried the Twilight books as a replacement for my old friends and found it utterly unbearable. Based on that, I will not pay for the grey books, would rather re read my old friends, however crap they may be perceived.
I agree with the person who said people never write stand alone books, in the old days they were not made into films as money opportunities and even the shitters had their place with us.

TheLazyGirlBlog · 19/06/2012 17:15

I read all 3 in the hope she would see what an egotistical and misogynist tosspot he was and dump him.
Its not the best piece of literature you'll ever read, but for mild titillation, its not bad. Certainly opened my eyes.
One thing I would say- if you happen to buy the books as a set in the cheapest place possible (the supermarkets are good, at one point Tesco were selling them for 2 for £7 and Sainsburys had the other for £3.60), read them, don't w**k over them and then sell them on Ebay, I made £15 back on my second hand copies. Win win.

TheLazyGirlBlog · 19/06/2012 17:17

I want to read the new Sweet Valley High book. I wanted to be Jessica as a kid. Oh dear.

HazleNutt · 19/06/2012 17:31

I tried to read it but it's just so badly written. Exactly how many times does an average person bite her lip and say "holy crap/fuck"? (am tempted to count, bet you we can get double figures per page)

OracleInLeCoracle · 19/06/2012 17:59

Hazel, there's a drinking game based on ana's "oh my"/"holy cow"/lip biting and christian's "smouldering gray eyes"

McHappyPants2012 · 19/06/2012 19:52

i loved the first book, going to start the 2nd :)

stargazy · 19/06/2012 20:21

Bought 3 books to take on holiday and 50 Shades of Grey one of them. Then went for a coffee and read a few snippets and immediately thought what a load of crap.Went straight back to bookstore and exchanged for something worth reading. But everyone's entitled to their opinion.

lizzyE · 19/06/2012 20:24

I am so glad I found this thread. I was beginning to think it was just me who thought it was possibly the worst book I've ever read! I'm all for a bit of erotic escapism, but why can't it have been written with a sympathetic heroine rather than one who inexplicably just keeps falling over and fluttering her eyelashes. Utter tosh, written for those who haven't had the pleasure of a proper novel and don't know any different. Harsh?

HazleNutt · 19/06/2012 20:24

Oracle I'm not sure I can drink that much Shock
Double shot for inner goddess?

McHappyPants2012 · 19/06/2012 20:34

lizzy, could you suggest one for me, not read since 2007 when HP7 came out.

i am now just finding the time, so just igniting the flame again

bignutbrownhair · 19/06/2012 20:34

I havent read this yet, but could someone explain the whole link with Twilight fan fic please. I dont really get how E L James's original story of this is anything to do with Twilight - apart from the fact that the characters were called Edward and Bella? Is Christian Grey a vampire in Fifty Shades? Or is it that they just share similar characteristics to the original characters (Bella a moody, clumsy drip and Edward a creepy possessive control freak?)

I dont know anything about fan fiction actually!
