like most of these sorts of books it's rubbish for women who lack self esteem.

Mia4 · 16/06/2012 13:12

Pinkflipflop It was Twilight fanfiction at first then the author pulled it, changed the names and published it.

Snowballed · 16/06/2012 13:34

Pinkflipflop - all the characters are just the Twilight characters with different names. It really is like the author just did 'find & replace' in Word then publsihed.

solidgoldbrass · 16/06/2012 14:53

An awful lot of fiction that is marketed vigorously at women is shite, though. Sophie Fucking Kinsella, for instance.

Though to be fair, some 'women's writers' are brilliant writers and storytellers.

UrsulaBuffay · 16/06/2012 15:18

I am ROFFLING at 'please Uncle Gary, stop!'

MarysBeard · 16/06/2012 15:21

Why is it so popular? Apparently there is loads of erotica and Mills and Boony stuff out there, so why is this one a best seller?

MarysBeard · 16/06/2012 15:24

"An awful lot of fiction that is marketed vigorously at women is shite, though."

A awful lot of fiction marketed at men is shite as well. I read one of my dad's Clive Cussler Dirk Pitt books (on his recommendation). It made me laugh a lot anyway, though it was all unintentional. There is definitely a male equivalent of chick lit.

LizzieMint73 · 16/06/2012 15:34

Alloverit I completely agree that the Martina Cole Books are shite. I read one or two and gave up because I couldn't believe how badly it was written. Clunky and repetitive sentence construction IIRC

ArthurandGeorge · 16/06/2012 15:39

I've just finished reading it.

I was disappointed by the writing so kept skipping to the sex which wasn't that interesting either and was made worse by the rubbish writing. I have no problem with the essentially escapist nature of the storyline and I quite like the femsub pov but it could have been done much better than this.

Is the sex more interesting in the next two?

Red13 · 16/06/2012 17:25

Re 'what's all the fuss about?', I'd suspect it's a triumph of PR over early sales data. The first time anyone heard about this book was probably in a news article about mommy porn, housewives getting hot under the collar over this great new book, etc, then people start to buy 'the great new book everyone's reading' and it becomes a WOM-driven thing. That article about women reading the book and running off to hardware stores to buy props was probably just another PR release. The author is also a former TV exec who's married to a screenwriter... she's connected enough to be able to get her stuff published.

EldritchCleavage · 18/06/2012 13:54

Thanks for the link, sgb.

DailyMailSpy · 18/06/2012 14:09

I've just started readIng it too, I'm only on the 3rd chapter but I think it's good.

KellyElly · 18/06/2012 15:24

It's AWFUL. The sex scenes are a bit novel at first (unless you read lots of erotica :) ) and then they get so unbelievable and are on practically every page that I just scrolled through then on my Kindle. It was like - yawn, not another unrealistic sex scene. I can't believe I wasted my money on the trilogy. Shit, shit, bollocks teen fiction with some attempt at porn thrown in. The lip biting, holy crap, eye rolling...don't even get me started on that!!!

smokeybacon · 18/06/2012 15:45

Oh god, I bought this as a supermarket cheapie last week as I had vaguely heard some "fuss" about it. So far I haven't even got to a kiss, it's that slow. But I may carry on and now read in conjunction with the blog which I will now have in my head at all times. So it is unlikely that I will be able to actually read it seriously or indeed get past the next chapter. I had no idea it was supposed to be erotic .

fuzzpig · 18/06/2012 16:14

I have the first one on my kindle as it was cheap and like so many wanted to see if it was worth the hype. I work in a library and had a customer asking for book 2, as they had finished book 1... The very next day they asked for book 3. That's fast reading that is.

5inthebed · 18/06/2012 16:21

I am reading the first book after my DH read all three and said I should Hmm

Finding it utter tripe and am bored of all the sex scenes, so skimming past those. I just want to know why he is the way he is, hoping for the full story.

BerryLellow · 18/06/2012 16:30

:o st sgb 'you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll shit'

AbsofAwesomeness · 18/06/2012 17:43

I think LeBOF should write erotica - there was a thread in chat a while back where an MNer was asked by a colleague to edit her "fictional" book, which turned out to be very bad erotica, but based on her life. LeBOF then wrote some pieces of erotica in the style of a Liverpudlian - was AMAZING.

chocolateandcoffee · 18/06/2012 17:54

they are so awful. for the first time in my life I found myself skimming past the sex scenesShock. I bought all three on amazon and once I had paid for them I had to read them.

Op if you really want to read them pm me you address and I will post them to you for free just to be rid of them

BelieveInPink · 18/06/2012 18:17

As far as erotica goes it's shite. But most of the people getting excited about it have never read erotica so it's a novelty. And they want everyone know they're reading a sexy book and therefore on fire in the bedroom.

Personally I found it very very tame. Which says more about me than the book!

anonacfr · 18/06/2012 19:04

I found some hilarious stuff about it on YouTube. Mark Reads (the guy who did a fantastic review of the twilight saga chapter by chapter) read it live for charity- look up Mark reads 50 shades. Then there is 'dramatic reading of 5o shades in the voice of the Cookie Monster'.... I cried.

anonacfr · 18/06/2012 19:04

Forgot to say it looks so terrible it almost made me want to read it. Where can I find it for free?

freddy05 · 18/06/2012 19:43

I have read (and possibly even written) better sex scenes than in this book and it's all free and doesn't line anyone's pockets!! How this book is a best seller and how twilight are just letting it happen I do not know!!

PissesGlitter · 18/06/2012 20:54

I dont give a shit that no one else likes it, i did and thats all i care about

TheVermiciousKnid · 18/06/2012 21:00

There is definitely a male equivalent of chick lit.

Dick lit?
