to think that people who choose to have more children whilst living in social housing shouldn't expect to be given a bigger place?

I am a member of another pregnancy forum and there is a woman there who has just had her 5th child (by choice). Neither her nor her partner work and she is complaining that the council will not giver them a bigger house (she is in a 3 bed). All the other members are sympathising with her but I don't understand why. Surely if you choose to have a child when you know your home is not big enough, you shouldn't expect the council to give you a bigger one, especially when it is sought after subsidised housing?

It's awful isn't it? I mean that one woman on the other forum moaning about it just proves that this country is going to the dogs.
Or something....

UnChartered · 09/06/2012 18:42

i dont think your post is unreasonable.

if you have children and are not in local authority housing then its usually tough tits!

but agree this will probably degenerate fairly rapidly...

FWIW I grew up in three bed house with my many siblings. We had a great fun sharing bedrooms so I'm sure she'll be ok with her 5 kids.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 09/06/2012 18:43

I actually think you have a point. This however, will not end well.

Out of interest, did you voice your opnion on this on the other forum?

usualsuspect · 09/06/2012 18:44

I grew up in a cardboard box Sad

NettoSuperstar · 09/06/2012 18:44

I'm a single parent with an only child.
I live in a two bed and am entitled to a three.
Shoot me now.
I'll fight to get the three bed too and turned down a place in a shit block, and made sure they withdrew that offer.
Someone has to get the decent houses, why shouldn't it be me?

marriedinwhite · 09/06/2012 18:44

Agrees entirely with the OP and hope she doesn't get too badly flamed. Families should have as many children as they wish, providing they are able to pay for them and do not expect the state to provide them with a high standard of living. DH's grandad was one of 9 in a two up two down mining village. The children did fine - they had nothing but love.

HecateTrivia · 09/06/2012 18:45

It's really probably best to give your opinion on the site in question, rather than dragging it over here and starting what will be a huge bunfight.

I am rather happy that the previous occupants of my (HA) house had so many children they were overcrowded, because when they finally got a bigger house, the HA gave this one to me.

UnChartered · 09/06/2012 18:45

cardboard box, usual? you lucky bugger Grin

PeanutButterCupCake · 09/06/2012 18:45

YANBU

knowitallstrikesagain · 09/06/2012 18:46

YANBU to think she should not be given a larger house. I don't care how many children people have, but they need to be prepared to compromise on some things and if you are a large family, surely living space will be one of those things?

usualsuspect · 09/06/2012 18:46

15 of us there were in that box
