To ask why some people think McDonalds is the devils food?

What have some people got so against it?

I use macdonalds not so much as a treat but more when I really cannot be bothered or we're back really late which usually comes once a month. Everytime I go it's always really busy, weekends it's absolutely full of kids so people must be eating it and they're not all dead/obese/chav scum. So why is it so frowned upon by some?

So McDonalds is bad because it uses meat?

Panda Agree re: Pret. Subway is another. Why is a meatball sandwich covered in melted cheese better than a McD burger? Oh yes, they offer a 'salad bar' which most people spurn and go for extra chesse & jalapenos

Noqontrol · 08/06/2012 12:25

Completely agree whatnow
I think people have been quite clear why they don't like it on here. Either because the foods shite, or the environmental issues, or both. The ops question has been answered, but if people dare to say they don't like it, they are accused of having a knee jerk reaction and are not clear why they don't like it, or they are MC. Can't win really huh Hmm

Mopswerver · 08/06/2012 12:26

cheese

eurochick · 08/06/2012 12:28

For me it's not snobbery (well, ok, maybe a bit) but because the food is vile. I had a couple of someone's fries a while ago and they tasted like cardboard covered in salt. Why would anyone pay money for that when there are so many tastier food options available?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 08/06/2012 12:34

No, I thought I was clear that I totally understand and respect the arguments many people make, but I don't think that everyone who does the 'devil food' thing is quite as reasoned and as sure as some of the people on here are.

I just think McDonalds is for some people somewhere it is the done thing to despise.

Mopswerver · 08/06/2012 12:35

But why McD's in particular? There is plenty of choice of shite food out there by companies who have (at least) equal disregard for the environment. McD's is not the only nor indeed the worst offender.

Many seem selective in their disdain e.g sneer at McD's but are fine about putting a cheap sausage on their bbq or using nasty pre-prepared meals. Not that I have a problem with that either. It's only once in a while, but why the villification of this particular restaurant? In my experience it is snobbery.

Ok, I misunderstood you then Originalsteamingnit. I thought you were referring to people on this thread. Apologies.

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 08/06/2012 12:39

Subways pretty bad! Think some of their sandwiches are worse then some McDonald's burgers

KFC!!! KFC is way worse! The chickens they use for meat are mutants!

Mopswerver · 08/06/2012 12:43

To me it is implicit in the title that the OP is confused by why McDonalds in particular are SO hated? No?

Jinsei · 08/06/2012 12:44

I have nothing against fast food per se, as ling as it's in moderation. And I'm rather partial to a Burger King spicy beanburger. But I don't like MacDonalds at all. Their veggie options are rank (well, always used to be, but haven't been in there for years - might have improved?)

CockyPants · 08/06/2012 12:46

Oh for fucks sake. People are being killed in Syria, and we're obsessing about bloody bananas and burgers??
Get a grip people...

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 08/06/2012 12:47

Burger king is vile. Give me a McDonalds any day

Mopswerver · 08/06/2012 12:47

....ditto most of the rest of the content on here so why log in cocky?

Rockpool · 08/06/2012 12:48

Didn't say that Mop re meat.

I don't use Pret or Subway, too expensive and we rarely eat out but take lunch. Corporate links aside Pret has masses of veggie options, massive and varied menu, loads of fresh fruit options, soups etc not high in fried meat, fries. You could easily put together a really healthy, filling, interesting meal. The last time I was in there years ago(pre kids) found the sandwich hugely filling.

PandaWatch · 08/06/2012 12:49

CockyPants I assume you will be saying the same on every single thread on mumsnet that isn't about Syria? Grin

Rockpool · 08/06/2012 12:49

Agree Mops

PandaWatch · 08/06/2012 12:52

But it's not healthy Rockpool - that's my point! Their sandwiches are loaded with fat and salt.

Mopswerver · 08/06/2012 12:55

I think people sweat it way too much.

Most are not going to any of the places as a diet choice so much as a quick way to eat something on the move. Yes Pret is prob more healthy but that's not my point. I agree with steamingnit. I think many people think it makes them sound like a good parent to say they never go to McDonalds when in reality they are making other similar choices.

The original question was why is it frowned upon by some (not disliked, which is different) and the answer is probably snobbery because the arguments against on a nutritional level fall apart when you compare it to other choices those same parents are happy to make.

Foshizzle · 08/06/2012 12:56

I actually think what people are assuming is implicit is that the assertion that McDonalds = bad, is also an assertion that parents who take their children to McDonalds = bad. I don't think everyone on this thread who is anti McDonalds is making that assertion at all. It is IMPOSSIBLE to always do the right thing in every aspect of your life, and again I don't think anyone is saying that they do. I certainly don't and particularly with respect to food!

The fact that other corporations behave badly too doesn't make McDonalds any less culpable, it just means that other corporations behave badly too. And yes it's ok to disapprove of any corporation that does - whether all fast food places on the basis of their nutritional value, or all big corporations on the basis of their bullying tactics or their marketing brainwashing.

As Wotnow said, this thread is about McDonalds - and I really am shocked at the number of people on the thread defending them. I get that what they're actually defending is what they perceive to be an attack on their parenting skills, but I for one don't judge people in this way. I don't judge parents who take their children or themselves to McDonalds (unless every day, obv). I do judge people who refuse to acknowledge the realities of the choice that they are making, however.

Rockpool · 08/06/2012 13:00

So don't pick a sandwich(although there are hoards are they all high in calories and fat) there are masses and masses of other options, soup, veggie sushi, wraps, skinny dips, salads, berry bowl, fruit sticks etc, etc.

I could easily put together a meal for my dc I'd be happy with.In McD there is buggar all to choose from.If you want a fruit bag you have to have a happy meal aaaaaand that's your lot.The salad is awful,I've tried one.Tis all lettuce and 2 bits of chicken anyway so wouldn't keep a gnat full.
