Seriously, this really gets my goat. I work. I have worked most of my childrens lives. I like the work I do and choose to work nights so I don't miss out on things like sports days etc, just miss out on sleep.
This does not make me a part time mother!! I never stop being a mum and putting my kids first for a second!
Also, their dad 'babysitting' while I work. Does that mean I babysit while he is at work?

Yes IgglePiggle we may as well fess up that all we actually do all day as SAHMS is sit on a lovely comfy sofa watching Cash in the Attic whilst our poor DCs bring us coffee and cakes all day!

rhondajean · 04/06/2012 20:33

Why thank you

You might have given it a polish in all that spare time you have, tut.

IKilledIgglePiggle · 04/06/2012 20:48

I was too busy taking my kids to the park.

rhondajean · 04/06/2012 20:57

Rofl - I even managed to do the polishing as well then? Grin

FayeGovan · 04/06/2012 21:03

being a parent who is at work and doing the parenting all day are 2 different things

when I'm at work my kids are at school, I'm still their mum but I'm not actually parenting them (and thank god I say, its the only break I get...)

parenting all day with wee ones is harder than any job I can think of

Krumbum · 04/06/2012 21:10

How else do you put it? 'mum who does own childcare full time as opposed to going to paid work' bit wordy. It's just an easy way of saying what you do, don't take it offensively. It's more to combat the idea that looking after kids is piece of piss, sahm doesn't quite cover it.

IKilledIgglePiggle · 04/06/2012 21:10

Wink Wine

FayeGovan · 04/06/2012 21:12

krum, most folk just say "mum"

we all know who works all day, who spends all day with the kids and who does a bit of both

rhondajean · 04/06/2012 21:15

I'd say mum covers it. Do men even have this debate? Wine or pimms all round!

scottishmummy · 04/06/2012 21:16

put a bit I welly in tae my steps
I want them shining, don't want to be talk o the steamie

Krumbum · 04/06/2012 21:16

Not if your answering when someone asks the questipn what do you do.

scottishmummy · 04/06/2012 21:19

why doesnt housewife suffice when asked what you do?

FayeGovan · 04/06/2012 21:21

what do you do?

answers on a postcard:

I stay at home looking after the kids

I work 3 days in (whatever)

I work full time

sorry, its not rocket science is it

FayeGovan · 04/06/2012 21:22

cos a housewife sometimes doesn't have kids sm

scottishmummy · 04/06/2012 21:23

fair point
just say you're a mum?

Krumbum · 04/06/2012 21:23

Housewife! I would never say that. Firstly mothers are not all married. And you can be a housewife even if you have no kids, so it doesn't explain what you do. I'd find that term demeaning.

FayeGovan · 04/06/2012 21:26

I haven't heard anyone say housewife since 1952

mindosa · 04/06/2012 21:27

YABU and too sensitive. I work pt and dont really care if other people think I mother part time

saladcream · 04/06/2012 21:31

True though that only women get worked up about this. If someone asked dh what he did he would say his occupation. Not i am a dad and a .......

scottishmummy · 04/06/2012 21:35

when I'm asked what I do,I answer my job

angelicstar · 04/06/2012 21:38

Just asked dh what he would say if someone asked him what i did. He looked scared, then confused and after much umming and ahhing came up with a diplomatic 'houseperson'; probably one up from a house elf though so should be grateful.

BetterChoicesChair · 04/06/2012 21:38

I've never met anyone in RL who says "Full-time mother". I think it's a bit taboo now, isn't it? We're all full-time mothers when we leave the delivery suite.

FWIW I'm a SAHM and I loathe the term SAHM. I prefer Neverhomemaker or "Lady of Leisure".

FayeGovan · 04/06/2012 21:42

i'd rather run down sauchiehall st naked than say homemaker or lady of leisure

cringe cringe and double cringe

peanutbutter38 · 04/06/2012 21:47

angelicstar, thanks for understanding me. I think sometimes people deliberately misintrepret posts and pretend they mean something else entirely.

bunnybing · 04/06/2012 21:48

When I was a SAHm I and asked what I did I would say 'I look after my kids' because that at the time was my 'job' and what I did.
