so I know whether I value your opinion on any given topic, or whether I will just humour you

I am working class, just so you know. Although 'I pass' for MC, so I may be moving amongst you undetected. be afraid

i aspire to be like you ( if you eat chips peas and gravy with a pie in ONE chippy tray)

usualsuspect · 30/05/2012 19:35

Oh I can do that , has to be a chicken and mushroom pie though

Tortington · 30/05/2012 19:43

not meat and tater?

this is a dilema

QueenTiggyDTheFirst · 30/05/2012 19:44

But I'm ROYALTY!

PooshTun · 30/05/2012 19:56

In my wc youth in the Midlands I've loved faggots and peas. I'm guessing that they are no longer called faggots in much the same way that the slimming supplement is no longer called Ayds :o

usualsuspect · 30/05/2012 20:08

They are still called faggots.

If you were a WC youth , I hate to tell you this, but you are still WC.

QueenTiggyDTheFirst · 30/05/2012 20:17

I'm talked before about the pot-pourri means of identifying middle classes.

Lower middle classes keep their pot-pourri in ceramic pots.
Middle middle class people keep theirs in sworoffski crystal doo dahs.
Upper middle classes keep their pot pourri in intricate little wooden boxes they picked up in Southern Morocco.
The Working classes would just eat it.
The upper classes would let a swan waddle around their house that had been coated in exotic oils squeezed out of scent glands from top models such as Naomi Campbell.

cakeismysaviour · 30/05/2012 20:20

I have the definitive answer on this.

When you bleed, is it blue or red? If its red you are a peasant and if its blue you are an aristocrat.

The end.

Houseworkprocrastinator · 30/05/2012 20:22

*spits out mouthful of pot-pourri (pronounce pot-pure-ray)

Thought it tasted a bit funny Shock

usualsuspect · 30/05/2012 20:23

I'd only eat it if it had brown sauce on.

QueenTiggyDTheFirst · 30/05/2012 20:26

Decorations:

LC- Hubcaps their Waynella found on a tip.
MC- Twigs and pebbly shit, obviously.
UC- Something handed down from their great great great great great great great Grandfather's favourite mistress.

WhiteWidow · 30/05/2012 21:36

Does if matter?

You've even gone as far as to have it in your nickname Confused

bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 22:58

i have it tattooed on my forehead too

OP posts:
bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 23:00

talking of the tip queen--did you all used to scavenge wood and old pram wheels off the tip to make boogies?

OP posts:
HuggyPomBear · 30/05/2012 23:04

I follow my mum's reasoning. If you work, then you're working class. Job done.

HuggyPomBear · 30/05/2012 23:04

Pardon the pun.

PooshTun · 31/05/2012 09:02

We scavenge to we use to call soap box carts (I've no idea why we called them that) but what are 'boogies'?

bejeezusWC · 31/05/2012 09:10

I suspect they are the same

i think i spelt it wrong! pronounced 'bogeys' (like the stuff that comes out of your nose!)

little go carts- with string to steer -and NO BRAKES!!

OP posts:
PooshTun · 31/05/2012 09:51

Well, we were probably more MC then we thought because we didn't call our carts after human nasal excrement :)

FoofyShmooffer · 31/05/2012 10:04

Bogeys - brilliant Bejeezus

Are you really Billy Bradshaw? Grin

horseygeorgie · 31/05/2012 10:04

God, is this thread STILL going!? Who cares? Yes, we live in a country where there is a class system. Big deal. You want more out of life and you are WC, work your behind off and you will get it.
There will always be people who are luckier, richer and have more advantages than you. They didn't ask for their postion in life, just as we didn't ask for ours. Someone has to be on the bottom of the pile, thats just the way it works and if you don't like it, move up!
Personally, knowing a fair few people at the top of the tree, what seems to be the biggest difference is they don't let their position, class or money define who they are.

PooshTun · 31/05/2012 10:30

Someone has gotten off the wrong side of her horse today.

Enough of this WC solidarity 'I'm one of you' stuff :) I have to say that I agree with horsey. Being WC and a 11+ failure didn't stop me achieving what I have. My kids going to a non-academic state primary didn't stop them beating a lot of prep school and expensively tutored kids to their coveted secondary school places.

A lot of immigrants land on these shores and a generation later their DCs are graduates, many with professional jobs. Their lack of English, money and social class didn't seem to have held them back.

bejeezusWC · 31/05/2012 11:39

its not about being 'bottom of the pile' and wanting to move 'up'

I am working class, not bottom/lower class

I had a great childhood and enjoy my life. Im not dissatisfied or jealous

I identify as WC. I dont want to be anything other

WC people dont strive to be not WC

I enjoy reminiscing with people who share WC culture horsey- you arent obliged to read the thread if it bores you

OP posts:
WhosPickleisThatOnion · 31/05/2012 13:06

I identify with WC.

Its nothing to do with moving up for me in terms of ambition. You can earn the highest salary in the land, and still identify with WC and have your roots there.

For my DC I would like them to be proud of where they come from and understand that with hard work and ambition everything is possible. And no one should ever feel embarrassed about where they and their family is from.
