so I know whether I value your opinion on any given topic, or whether I will just humour you

I am working class, just so you know. Although 'I pass' for MC, so I may be moving amongst you undetected. be afraid

God knows.

Big detached house set in about an acre. Own stable yard, currently only 2 horses but room for about 8. Chickens in the back yard, lurcher, greyhound and terrier. Ferret. Make jam, think a cake isn't a cake unless it is baked from scratch and can prepare most types of game. I hunt and drive a 4x4. Borther is an airline pilot, Father is a Vicar and Mother does things in the parish but has a 1st english degree. I shop at Waitrose and sainsbugs. Conservative and take either the Times or Independant and have a posh accent.

BUT!

I am a single parent, living at home with my parents. The yard is cheap, i am not working at the min due to small child but before was a groom. 4X4 cost Dad £400 on ebay and he just repaired it. Both parents are from council house backgrounds but worked to get where the are.

What am I?!

Latara · 30/05/2012 10:50

Ok. My cat is outside powdering her nose on the the neighbour's lawn. Oh great.

PooshTun · 30/05/2012 10:53

"and WTF is WC food?"

Stuff available at Iceland? :o

Latara · 30/05/2012 10:55

horsey - What are you?
Well.... I would guess that you are a person who is very very very busy feeding & cleaning up after (counts...) 5 pets, 1 child & lots of chickens.
I suggest buying a cake from SAINSBUGS (cool) as they taste like homemade anyway.

LST · 30/05/2012 10:57

I know plenty of people who shop in Iceland who certainly aren't working class.. Shows how much you know ay poosh

PooshTun · 30/05/2012 11:01

LST - Lighten up. There is an Iceland by the railway station and I usually pop in there on the way home to buy milk, bread etc

Tortington · 30/05/2012 11:03

LST · 30/05/2012 11:06

LST · 30/05/2012 11:06

bejeezusWC · 30/05/2012 11:06

PooshTun · 30/05/2012 11:07

Gastropubs and Gastropub oven-ready meals have made pies MC so you need to drop that from your list of what constitutes WC food.

As for chips, if you call them chunky chips or you refer to them as double cooked chips then that make it MC fare.

PooshTun · 30/05/2012 11:08

"poosh I'm fine with how I am thabks"

That is questionable but hey ho.

LST · 30/05/2012 11:09

Corned beef and potato pie is my favourite food ever in the whole entire universe......

LST · 30/05/2012 11:10

Go on then poosh question it? Hmm

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 30/05/2012 11:10

I used to love the Iceland ads with katona they were hilarious. Tikka bites! Prawn rings! Damn that coke habit.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 30/05/2012 11:12

I think the people who actually are fine with being WC or MC do not feel the need to make sly little digs at everyone else
But hey ho....

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 30/05/2012 11:13

Your working on a much looser definition of mc than volvomo poosh.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 30/05/2012 11:13

Middle-class people always assume I'm One Of Them (and I do live a pretty middle-class lifestyle now).

But as a kid we had ITV on all the time; it was a bit posh to watch the BBC. We lived on oven chips, tinned pies, Mr Kipling tarts etc ? and it was dinner and tea, in the south of England, so not a northern/southern thing.

I hadn't heard of Radio 4 or real coffee til I went to uni. I didn't go abroad with my parents til I was 14.

I went to, essentially, a sink school.

My dad is a professional but was the first and only of his siblings to go to uni and was a bit of an oddity. My mum is retired but worked her whole career in the service industry.

There were no books in the house really, just my mum's Take a Break etc.

OP, on balance you should probably pay less than zero attention to my opinions Grin.

piprabbit · 30/05/2012 11:14

I did a degree in Sociology and spent a lot of time considering class systems. I'm still none the wiser as to what class I am.

I suspect I am Lower Middle Class.

Houseworkprocrastinator · 30/05/2012 11:14

Help I don't know what I am...

Grew up in a posh village,
Good State school,
Had piano lessons but no horse riding
Now live on council estate (owned house)
People here call me posh
Kids wear boden clothes, bought from eBay
Shop in tescos but have it delivered
Husband has good professional job
I am a sahm (don't own an apron)
My kids say "pardon" instead of "what"
And I "go to the loo"

Tortington · 30/05/2012 11:14

exactly poosh - the Mcers are taking over our food, they already eat babies the fuckers.

there should be a class aparteid, cos the wcers have the best food

MustControlFistOfDeath · 30/05/2012 11:16

Upper Class here.

What is this corned beef of which you speak? Sounds frightfully American.

PooshTun · 30/05/2012 11:16

When I was a student I remember watching Masterschef with a Chinese friend and one of the contestants was cooking congee which is basically soggy rice. My friend couldn't stop laughing. Congee is considered to be peasant food. In the old days peasants couldn't affording meat or fish to go with their rice so they took the rice and did it in a watery sauce in order to give the bland rice some flavour.

I wonder if the Chinese version of Masterchef ever had a Chinese competitor cook fish fingers and mushy peas :)

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 30/05/2012 11:16

No fucker is taking my chips. I'll defend them with my life. You may have the stuffed hearts. And stop triple cooking them Heston you animal.

summerintherosegarden · 30/05/2012 11:19

fester - toilet paper or just TP!

latara yes upper class, and I would have a very similar photo of me circa '97 except I wasn't allowed an adidas/kappa tracksuit - Mum claimed they were a fire hazard but now I've read this thread I know better Smile
