DC toys - relaunching superhero as "openly gay"

Really?

FFS - that is taking things way too far IMO.

(and, no, before anyone suggests it - I don't have an issue with anyone's personal preference).

I do have issues with this tho.

Double standard ? Quite possibly.

........ hands discussion to the floor for debate ......

There's tons of female superheroes. Doesn't look like it will be a superhero, just a side character. I was really hoping for a main hero like green lantern, flash etc.

Frontpaw · 23/05/2012 18:49

It has to be Robin.

Mrsjay · 23/05/2012 18:58

of course batman is gay have you seen how tight his top is Grin and robin is now going to be his life partner not sidekick ,

twilight3 · 23/05/2012 19:05

I don't get it. A superhero is a superhero, I never thought about batman's or superman's sexual orientation... Why do we have to know or care whether they're straight or gay? Am I missing something?

JosephineCD · 23/05/2012 19:07

Apparently it is Jimmy Olsen.

SeaHouses · 23/05/2012 19:26

Twilight, I've not read the comics but certainly in one of the Superman films Superman and Lois are in a relationship.

Dprince · 23/05/2012 19:29

Batman/ Bruce Wayne has had various women come and go over the years. Superman has Lois lane, been lantern has carol etc superheroes are resoundingly straight.

Dprince · 23/05/2012 19:30

Hahaha 'been lantern' I obviously meant green lantern. :)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/05/2012 19:32

I agree with you, OP, why can't superheroes just be superheroes, ditto any other toys? I was really irritated about Dumbledore supposedly being declared 'gay' - there was no reference to it in the books, he was just a bad headteacher who put his students in frequent peril. What does sexual orientation have to do with it? Confused

twilight3 · 23/05/2012 19:48

yeah, I see, I hadn't thought of their social encounters, I just think of them rescuing people

PrematurelyAirconditioned · 23/05/2012 19:57

But twilight, they've been writing stories about these people every month for 60 years - there's a limit to the number of baddies they can beat up before the authors start to venture into their home life.

It's like detective series on telly - Poirot and Marple may have no romantic life whatsoever, but all the others we get some clue as to their orientation even if it's not strictly relevant to catching the killer.

I am drawn to reminisce about the adorable, if somewhat stereotypical, Desert Peach, fave of my teenage years. And of course Dykes to Warch Out For, though they were very far from superheroes.

Aribura · 23/05/2012 19:58

It's nothing to do with the toys. Stop misleading people.

twilight3 · 23/05/2012 20:16

I thought Poirot IS gay

muffinino82 · 23/05/2012 20:19

Marvel's Rictor and Shatterstar, look them up. Two of my favourite characters. The writing and usually the art is excellent.

Is your name Rob Liefeld, by any chance? Hmm

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/05/2012 20:24

twilight... Not in the books, nothing alluded to at all. I think on tv his shoes just pinch...

WorriedBetty · 24/05/2012 08:31

I think superman is gay, apparently he did the Invisible man in the bottom whilst the invisible man was doing wonderwoman. He says it was 'a mistake' but I don't believe him - all too convenient!

WestleyAndButtockUp · 24/05/2012 12:47

If it's Robin, which Robin, though?

Dick Grayson?
Jason Todd?
Tim Drake?
or Carrie whatsername?
