DC toys - relaunching superhero as "openly gay"

Really?

FFS - that is taking things way too far IMO.

(and, no, before anyone suggests it - I don't have an issue with anyone's personal preference).

I do have issues with this tho.

Double standard ? Quite possibly.

........ hands discussion to the floor for debate ......

It's going to be Batman, i tell you. Him and Boy Wonder are going to rip each others tights off in the Batmobile.

I can't wait for the film, I nominate Bradley's Cooper and Pitt as BM and Robin.

cocolepew · 23/05/2012 11:18

Big Ears was far too old for Noddy. That's not right.

MaisyMooCow · 23/05/2012 11:19

TBH I think it is about time that being Gay/ Lesbian is seen and represented and accepted as 'normal'.

In my world it is already. Clearly though others seem to think not.

Can I just say, I clearly am massively psychic and have the inside skinny on this Grin

My money's on Batman!!

I have now got TheUnmember's video in my head and can't stop humming it...

babylann · 23/05/2012 11:22

It can't be Superman because of Lois, or Spiderman because of the hanging downwards kissing that woman thing. It has to be Batman really, doesn't it? I know very little about comic heroes, but I don't think I've ever encountered a storyline where Batman has romantic interests with a woman? Whereas Superman and Batman definitely do. Unless Lois was a "beard".

toofattorun · 23/05/2012 11:23

Can we call him Battyman?

If it's Batman I'm going to sulk!!
I do think that it's wrong to rebrand known figures as gay to make a point, if you want a gay superhero then create one, I have no problem with that but it's akin to the "Modern" Sherlock Holmes - totally pointless, imo. Just create a new detective.

Faithless12 · 23/05/2012 11:24

I don't see why you have an issue with it. Toys don't make people gay, but it may help a child come to terms with it or see that it isn't something wrong or to hide.

cocolepew · 23/05/2012 11:26

Actually I think I read the other day it was Batman.

The vigilante who wears rubber and likes boys in tights.

That's a Channel 4 fetish documentary if ever I heard one.

Heleninahandcart · 23/05/2012 11:31

How is Batman not gay?

"It has to be Batman really, doesn't it? I know very little about comic heroes, but I don't think I've ever encountered a storyline where Batman has romantic interests with a woman? "

he's had a kid with Talia al Ghul tbf and he's been involved with Cat Woman a few times.

:o

I reckon it'll be . He may have been in the closet but he's hardly kept the door closed.

CaseyShraeger · 23/05/2012 11:38

Why is your subject thread about toys? DC is a comics publisher. Their comics are (I suspect) mostly bought and read by adults or older teens. DC characters in the comics have already had a wide range of sexual relationships of various sorts and various degrees of healthiness. And yet I suspect that you've not found plotlines like "Tarantula has non-consensual sex with Nightwing [Robin all grown up]" or "Green Lantern dates a 13 year old" or "Superman has an unhealthy obsession with his teenage cousin" working their way into your children's toys, have you? I don't see any reason why that's going to change just because one of the sexual relationships depicted in the comics is a same-sex one (and presumably a consensual relationship one hell of a lot less screwed-up than many of the heterosexual relationships on display).

Fundamentally I don't want a DC superhero Bedroom Bondage Set toy range, that's true. But that's independent of whether such a hypothetical thing would feature Superman and Lois or Superman and Louis.

wigglesrock · 23/05/2012 11:39

Yes Batman is not a superhero (20 years of being with my husband and this fact has finally sunk in) - he's a crime fighter with dinky gadgets.

I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old and the younger asked me last week "can 2 boys get married" I said yes, no bother if they love each other and the elder then piped up "yes, xxxs uncle got married to his boyfriend last year" x being a school friend. That was it, no big discussion, no questions, just an acceptance of this being part of every day life. They then went on to hold quite a lavish wedding between swim and puppy Barbie, it was great, no bickering about who had to be the boring groom.

ohhh...imagine the fun Grin

CaseyShraeger · 23/05/2012 11:40

Also, babylann, because Spiderman is a Marvel character rather than DC...

CherryBlossom27 · 23/05/2012 11:44

Honestly I don't see how this is going to help, all I can imagine is boys calling each other "gay" for playing with a "gay" superhero....

I think generally talking about the differences in people and the parents attitudes have a lot more to do with creating a more open and accepting culture than having a token gay super hero.

I also agree with a previous poster, why are we bringing sex into our childrens toys?

SeaHouses · 23/05/2012 11:48

How are we bringing sex into our children's toys?

DD has a sylvanian families wedding set with a bride and groom. Is that bringing sex into our children's toys?

In her Topsy and Tim books, Tony Walsh's mum not only lives with a man but she also gets pregnant and has a baby! Is that too much sex in a children's book?

teedeeuk · 23/05/2012 11:48

Bat Woman has been a lesbian for a few years now..

manicbmc · 23/05/2012 11:49

How is it bringing sex into toys? Being gay isn't just about the shagging you know. Hmm

There are plenty of gay people in the world so why not in the superhero world?

manicbmc · 23/05/2012 11:50

And I'd be seriously pissed off if a child of mine were to use 'gay' as a derogatory term.
