DC toys - relaunching superhero as "openly gay"

Really?

FFS - that is taking things way too far IMO.

(and, no, before anyone suggests it - I don't have an issue with anyone's personal preference).

I do have issues with this tho.

Double standard ? Quite possibly.

........ hands discussion to the floor for debate ......

I'm not homophobic - in fact my nephew is gay snurk

Magneto · 23/05/2012 11:04

Ken is sooo in the closet. Action man is barbie's real bf.

witchwithallthetrimmings · 23/05/2012 11:05

I think that might be the issue though oopsi, how do you make superman gay without resorting to sterotypes or signals such as hankerchiefs in back pocket that will go over children's heads.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 23/05/2012 11:07

Although, if they did sell that little batman doll, I would totally buy it ...

mummmsy · 23/05/2012 11:08

i think oopsi was being facetious in order to make a point to the original poster Lulabellarama

RetroMom · 23/05/2012 11:08

Straight people have straight babies, and sometimes straight people have gay babies.

Give gays a superhero too!

I remember years back there was a woman in America who made lesbian barbies and sold them on by canibalising Barbie and ken Smile

Okay, firstly you need to remember that DC's superhero characters (and Marvel's for that matter) are presented for multiple audiences. In the adult versions, lots of the characters and storylines are openly romantic and sexual. In the kid versions, their sex lives hardly feature in the stories at all. Although they often have boyfriends or girlfriends, the plotlines aren't romantic or sexy.

I doubt our kids will see anything more explicit than Peter Parker being in love with Mary Jane or Dumbledore being in love with Grindelwald.

And for the adults in the room...well, I'm hoping it's Batman. It's about time he and the Joker got together.

Sounds intriguing. The storyline could be very interesting. Presumably the toys and merchandise will be as it ever was, because, you know, gay or straight a superhero is still badass cool.

ThisIsANickname · 23/05/2012 11:10

My money is on Green Lantern (if it is unsuccessful, they can bring in a new green lantern and that will be that).

If you had been invested in the character for years and gotten to "know" them, as it were, I could understand a feeling of unease. Especially if they are "rebranding" said hero, thereby ignoring or replacing past story lines involving them, rather than having them finally just come out of the closet.

However, just being uncomfortable with a child's comic book character being gay is a bit Hmm.

Oh, and saying "I'm not homophobic, my nephew is gay" sounds a lot like "I'm not racist, I have a black friend." (Or something similar)

cocolepew · 23/05/2012 11:11

Can Batman not fly? How disappointing.

Why do we need to know if the superhero is gay or straight. As long as he's doing his job properly and saving people and cats, that's all that matters. Grin

I don't know whether my colleagues are hetro or gay and I don't need to. I just need them to be colleagues!

SeaHouses · 23/05/2012 11:13

Who are the DC superheroes then? Is there a list? I've only noticed them recently because of the superhero lego collection.

CarpeJugulum · 23/05/2012 11:14

I have no issue with this.

DS is only 19mo so a little young for comics, but I suspect that young kids will take it in their stride. If I read all the blurb correctly, then the comics will have it as a story line, and therefore if your DC's are too young/or just don't read the comics, then it will have little impact on them.

I can however see it potentially backfiring a little with slightly older kids, with more blinkered upbringings in the "I'm not playing with that, he's gay" scenario, so maybe parents will have to do a bit more explaining about differences - but that conversation will always come up at some point I guess.

does this help?

idontbelieveanymore · 23/05/2012 11:16

TBH I think it is about time that being Gay/ Lesbian is seen and represented and accepted as 'normal'.
Yes it will be a difficult transition for some people and may cause awkward discussion between adults and children learning about differences in society BUT I like to think in a fifty years time (before hopefully) it will be such a non-issue and that everybody will be as horrified about the gay/straight issues as we now are that segregation existed in such recent history.

Dawndonna · 23/05/2012 11:16

I think it's an excellent idea.

RetroMom · 23/05/2012 11:17

Wasn't Noddy banned from sleeping with Big Ears?
