and the NHS should not fund IVF in favour of vital medications for already existing people e.g. cancer drugs being funded? Hmm

I'm feeling masochistic this evening and am looking forward to munching on some biscuits and getting my ass handed to me.

...the fucking moron doctor told me not to give up because look at all the celebrities who have babies in their forties.

TheQueenOfSheba · 24/05/2012 12:34

Just to give you an idea of how hard it is, in Australia, which has some of the best IVF success rates in the world, there is not one single case of a woman aged 45 or over getting pregnant with her own eggs. Ever.

PickledFanjoCat · 24/05/2012 12:35

Id still want to be given that chance in my early 40s:

For women younger than 35, the percentage of live births per cycle is 39.6%.
For women ages 35 to 37, the percentage of live births per cycle is 30.5%.
For women ages 38 to 40, the percentage of live births per cycle is 20.9%.
For women ages 41 to 42, the percentage of live births per cycle is 11.5%.
For women ages 43, the percentage of live births per cycle is 6.2%.
After age 44, little more than 1% of IVF cycles with non-donor eggs lead to live birth

The point is that they may not need a procedure as harsh as IVF to get pregnant Maryz.

Offering IVF before doing investigative tests and trying other possibles solutions is a ridiculous idea.

DuelingFanjo · 24/05/2012 12:44

"Just to give you an idea of how hard it is, in Australia, which has some of the best IVF success rates in the world, there is not one single case of a woman aged 45 or over getting pregnant with her own eggs. Ever."

but... there will be plenty of women getting pregnant naturally over 45.
IVF can fail at many points during the process, starting with a failure to harvest any eggs at all.

I'm not denying that it's really hard to get pregnant for most women over 45 but it's also not an impossibility and telling women that 39 should be the cut off is not fair - it can work for some women and 39 is too young to just say an outright 'no'. IMO

I can see what Mary means but as someone who had IVF I don't think, even if I had been offered it earlier, I would have done it straight away. It was a last resort for me, infact I said I would never have IVF but then you go through all the investigation, the clomid and so on and before you know it you are sat in a room talking about injecting yourself every day for 2 weeks.

I had an easy time of it, few side effects (and it worked) but I don't think anyone ever goes into it lightly or without reservations, even when it's free.

"but... there will be plenty of women getting pregnant naturally over 45."

I would dispute this. There aren't 'plenty' of women getting pregnant naturally after 45, the chances of this are incredibly slim.

TheQueenOfSheba · 24/05/2012 13:46

but... there will be plenty of women getting pregnant naturally over 45.

Actually, there aren't. At least not with chromosomally normal babies. Most end in miscarriage. Just because someone's aunt or the lady up the road had a baby at 46, 20-odd years ago, that doesn't mean it is possible for most women.

TheQueenOfSheba · 24/05/2012 13:52

But I do worry about people who go down the infertility route in their late 30's who aren't told that ivf effectively doesn't work well after 40, and certainly not after 43.

We are told, but we're not listening. I genuinely believed it was a ploy to keep women out of the workplace. I now know better.

Also, I will go out on a limb here, and say that I have good reason to believe that Kelly Preston, Geena Davis, Julia Roberts and Marcia Cross all used donor eggs.

whitby80 · 24/05/2012 14:01

Well I am 44 and I am about to give birth to what appears to be a chromosmally normal baby. This id despite dh having a low sperm count and me being told I was pretty much hitting menopause so it can happen.

cornflowers · 24/05/2012 14:02

The daughter of a friend of my mother's recently had her first baby at 47. She says it happened naturally. Who knows? Perhaps it did. The main thing is, she has a healthy baby and is very happy. She is also incredibly lucky, whatever the circumstances of the conception.

whitby80 · 24/05/2012 14:02

Naturally conceived. We wouldn't have qualified for IVF 1st time round when I was in my 30's. Only IUI

Thank you maryz

DuelingFanjo · 24/05/2012 14:21

sorry - I meant to take the 'plenty' out but forgot to go back.

Lambzig · 24/05/2012 14:21

In response to the OP's last lovely post. Can anyone please explain why it is always women who go for IVF who are accused of being "I want, I want" about having a child and not those who conceive naturally?

I would have thought, for a lot of natural conceptions, there is an element where the women and/or couple have decided "I/we want" a baby before they start trying.

Has anyone noticed how many celebs have twins, one of each?
Must be something in the water in LA

DuelingFanjo · 24/05/2012 14:43

maybe though some older women do have twins, something to do with the body chucking out eggs or so I heard?

Julia Roberts wasn't that old having her kids by the way, I would have thought IVF with her own eggs would be a more likely thing than donor eggs, unless of course she had some kind of fertility issue RE her own eggs.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 24/05/2012 14:46

It's not just the older ones though.
I have no proof of this theory btw
Just sayin
