Would you be offended by a father accompanying his small daughters into the ladies toilet?

I have two dds aged 4 and 2. My dh often takes them out and about in town on his own and inevitably needs to take them into public toilets. The thing is that male public toilets are often extremely dirty and unsanitary and I'd much rather he took them into the ladies. My question is would you be offended by a man coming into the ladies toilet when he is obviously accompanying a small girl? I don't personally know anyone who would have a problem with this but would be interesting to see if lots of people disagree with me.

I was in a resturant in france, went into the toilets, it was all open, there I was sat on the loo, when a man came in and wee'd in the urinal, even said "bonjour" i was Grin

outyougo · 07/05/2012 15:09

If you are in a unisex toilet then you know you are in a unisex toilet and act accordingly. You wouldn't, for example, leave the door open to keep an eye on your buggy/baby/shopping, you wouldn't adjust your bra or try and remove a stain from you top by hoiking it up and running under the tap then holding it up to the hand drier. A muslim woman may choose not to faff about with her headscarf. Its thinking that you are in a womans toilet and men thinking its all right to come in that I don't like.

I also think it sets a president that its ok for men to use female spaces if they prefer it rather than for absolute necessity, such as the men's toilet being out of order and the women's reallocated (with signage) as unisex.

IAmBooyhoo · 07/05/2012 15:10

men's
women's
children's (unisex or only until age 8 or segregated from birth? Confused)
disabled
nappy changing room
transexuals
cross dressers
men's dirty
women's dirty

the list could go on couldn't it.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 07/05/2012 15:10

Haven't read the thread so don't know where the consensus of opinion lies (if there is one) but,no,I would not be offended. It's a Dad taking his kids to the loo and making sure,at those ages, they are safe and can manage.

I'm a grown up,they're children. If I don't like it I can wait and go elsewhere.Or wait until they've left.

But it's just no big deal at all to me.

doormat · 07/05/2012 15:11

you forgot psycho boo lol

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/05/2012 15:12

Tittytitty - if I overheard the conversation someone upthread imagined hearing through the disabled loo door, with nursery rhyme singing, instructions about handwashing and the request to wait whilst mummy does a wee, then I would assume that it might not be someone disabled.

Though actually I would be so upset and distraught at having had such a horrible accident in public that I wouldn't be thinking about anything else other than everyone laughing at me and/or judging me. Sad

insancerre · 07/05/2012 15:12

don't leave the psychos out or they will simply invade everybody else's space

WorraLiberty · 07/05/2012 15:13

Boo if your list gets any longer I won't be able to chose who deserves to be beaten up first Grin

IAmBooyhoo · 07/05/2012 15:13

darn it.

but it would be

men psycho
ladies pscho
children psycho?
disabled pscho......

DumSpiroSpero · 07/05/2012 15:13

My DH has always taken DD (now 7.8) into a cubicle the gents when they've been out together and assures me there has been no problem with her 'seeing anything' so on balance I'd say probably not necessary for a man to go in the ladies with his DD's unless the men's are particularly foul.

I can see it from the other POV though - really highlights how inadequate facilities are from men and their DD's. Most of the changing facilities near us are just that and don't have toilets too so that isn't an option.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 07/05/2012 15:14

And I would think a Dad going into a loo with his kids would want to get out asap.I reckon he'd take the first loo possible, and go in with them.If he didn't need to go in,I imagine he'd hover in the 'lobby' part.

I have far more of a problem being on a mixed hospital ward with men.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 07/05/2012 15:15

I wouldn't want my DH to take my DD's into a gents with urinals. If it was all cubicles and he thought it was OK,I'd be OK with that.

IAmBooyhoo · 07/05/2012 15:15

beat them all up just to be sure you get the right ones. there's bound to be a psycho amongst that lot (definitely will be one in the psycho loo-just make sure you dont get the cleaner- unless it's a special 'psycho' cleaner Confused).

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/05/2012 15:17

Regarding the OP, and the further discussions - I honestly don't think that allowing fathers of little girls to bring them into the ladies' loo would be such a dreadful, unforgivable thing, nor do I think it would set a precedent that would allow any man to use the ladies' loo for any other spurious reason.

And it wouldn't worry me too much if a man did bring his little dds into the ladies' - but I do completely understand those who, for whatever reason, would not be comfortable with this. I have to say that when I was a teenager, and horribly self-conscious, I would have been mortified if a man had come into the ladies' whilst I was in there - even though I would have been in a cubicle, and he wouldn't have seen anything inappropriate.

But I think the 'beat him up/arrest him' response is utterly barking - a ridiculous overreaction. Honestly, if you would get that violent about this, which is, in the grand scheme of things, relatively minor - how would you react if something really bad happened? Nuclear strike? Armageddon?

WorraLiberty · 07/05/2012 15:20

To be fair if there was a Nuclear strike I think we'd all shit our pants anyway Grin

ENormaSnob · 07/05/2012 15:22

What about women who love other women?

Or men who like men?

Maybe just unisex ones would be easier all round.

5madthings · 07/05/2012 15:23

it wouldnt bother me in the slightest.

re disabled toilets, lots of the ones in my town are also where the nappy change facilities are, so if i go in to change dds nappy then i will encourage my ds4 to have a wee at the same time to save on then queing up for the toilets, but i wouldnt go in with the sole purpose of using the toilet iyswim?

KitCat26 · 07/05/2012 15:24

My DH wouldn't dream of going into the ladies with our DDs.
If we had a son I wouldn't take him to the gents.

I always assumed it was the sex of the adult that counted when deciding which loos to use or whichever had the shortest queue.

However, I wouldn't be bothered if I came across a man and his child in the ladies, there are cubicles after all.

I do love places with family toilets though

IAmBooyhoo · 07/05/2012 15:25

yep norma

big unisex toilets, no urinals, alll cubicles with plenty of disabled cubicles and baby changing stations and maybe smaller toilets for children

RabidAnchovy · 07/05/2012 15:25

But what if the Psychos yes the disabled access toilets Confused

RabidAnchovy · 07/05/2012 15:25

USE not yes

IAmBooyhoo · 07/05/2012 15:25

sorry psycho's no provisions for you. actions and consequences and all that

insancerre · 07/05/2012 15:26

I have just remembered a really gross story that was told to me years ago.
A member of the local police force was caught after he developed a fetish for visiting public toilets with slices of bread which he then wiped around the bowls and then proceeded to eat.

So we need another toilet for psychos with bread

WorraLiberty · 07/05/2012 15:26

Actually the new toilets in my town center have a parent and child cubicle that stands alone (similar to a disabled toilet) so it's totally unisex.

But that was taken into consideration during the design and planning. I doubt other places would have the space to adapt and add one of these.

But it's definitely the way forward.

IAmBooyhoo · 07/05/2012 15:27

you beat them up rabid.
