Typhoon Fighter Jets flying overhead (Olympics) I'm a great big wuss...

Oh I know I'm being unreasonable really but every time I hear the deafening sound of RAF fighter jets flying overhead...like they were 10 minutes ago (which they only seem to do at night??) it scares the beejayzus out of me Sad

I live less than 10 mins on a train from the Olympic Stadium and worry that if they have to shoot anything out of the sky...they're going to do it over my house?!? Blush

I admit to laughing when I read they're going to store surface-to-air missiles on the roof of a block of council flats near the stadium...but it's not funny really!

Well ok it was a bit funny cos I know the block of flats they mean and all I can say is they're going to need to bolt them down, or they'll find they've been nicked and replaced with a block of bricks Grin

Anyway, the thought of a terrorist attack (God forbid) is a very worrying one...whether it's in the sky or on the buses/trains.

And hearing the jets flying overhead just makes it seem all the more real in a way.

Like I said...I'm a wuss Blush

You are lucky you just hear them over head, we have the fuckers taking off and landing too, over here in West London, which is worse than thunder! I rang up earlier today to complain about the noise and was told there would be nothing at night, well there was not long ago a landing or a take off!

There is no official threat!

It is only until 10th May, and they will be gone again.

They have permission to go supersonic during the Olympics!

hiddenhome · 05/05/2012 22:41

YANBU it does sound very scary.

dh and me were out walking in the north pennines one day and a fighter jet suddenly appeared and flew, very low, over us. I could practically see the pilot. The noise was deafening and I was terrified. I hit the deck (wet grass with sheep poo) and prepared to be hit, but they just shot over and went away into the distance. Amazing, but scary.

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 22:41

I'm moving in with you two for the 3 weeks

You can argue it out amongst yourselves Grin

No, ynbu really. I absolutely love the sound of fighter jets and many a happy holiday has been had in The Highlands just waiting for them to go over, BUT I too live in London and although I don't live close enough to hear them, I think I might feel the same way.

I've heard too many sounds in the sky which are terrorist attacks, that I think I'd think the same thing.

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 22:42

Lady they were obviously the same ones!

hiddenhome it is exciting especially for my DS's but yes very scary.

I was outside drinking coffee with a friend this afternoon and one flew over, my ears were ringing for ages afterwards. I live near RAF Northolt and Heathrow, and these Typhoos are in another league when it comes to noise!

Kayano · 05/05/2012 22:45

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 22:45

YABU Grin I love hearing the jets.. havent heard them tonight though, so they mustnt have come over us this time..

HybridTheory · 05/05/2012 22:50

I can undestand it mst be unsettling but so far no Olympics have resulted in any country neding to shoot things out of the sky.

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 22:50

squeaky you're just jealous the RAF came over me and not you Wink

Loving the Geordie cats saying 'Howay'!!

Be happy you don't live 3 miles from a RAF base with jets based there. They do scare me at times when they appear out of nowhere really low and fast.

difficultpickle · 05/05/2012 22:52

I heard something this evening that sounded like a fighter jet. We are west of London.

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 22:55

Viva my mate lives in Norfolk (Thetford) and I used to love seeing and hearing all the military stuff going on.

Yes that would have been them bisjo

OP posts:
LadyWithEDS · 05/05/2012 22:55

They took off about about 1, were all over the place up high all afternoon, some took off or landed about 5, and some were taking off or landing about half an hour ago! I was thankfully only outside for the flyby in the afternoon and not when there was a landing or take off, they are the most lethal!

southeastastra · 05/05/2012 22:55

isn't the whole think totally over the top?

LadyWithEDS · 05/05/2012 22:57

I think it is ott too! They took down a ten foot hedge by RAF Northolt, and put up railings so you can now see the runway and Tyhoons!

It reminds me of a country like China showing off their weapons!

I wonder if it is all designed to scare joe public so that stealth control can be forced on us more by those in power!

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 22:58

Oh I would have loved to have seen the flyby.

I only ever hear them when it's dark Angry

Yes southeastastra many people think it is.

I hate to say it but I think if there was going to be a terrorist attack it would probably be on a packed train anyway Sad

OP posts:
gallicgirl · 05/05/2012 22:59

I think they've been using the Thames as a guide because we might have heard them along the coast.

I think it's all over the top too but I have a mate with MOD connections who assures me there is a credible threat.

Hmm
