Typhoon Fighter Jets flying overhead (Olympics) I'm a great big wuss...

Oh I know I'm being unreasonable really but every time I hear the deafening sound of RAF fighter jets flying overhead...like they were 10 minutes ago (which they only seem to do at night??) it scares the beejayzus out of me Sad

I live less than 10 mins on a train from the Olympic Stadium and worry that if they have to shoot anything out of the sky...they're going to do it over my house?!? Blush

I admit to laughing when I read they're going to store surface-to-air missiles on the roof of a block of council flats near the stadium...but it's not funny really!

Well ok it was a bit funny cos I know the block of flats they mean and all I can say is they're going to need to bolt them down, or they'll find they've been nicked and replaced with a block of bricks Grin

Anyway, the thought of a terrorist attack (God forbid) is a very worrying one...whether it's in the sky or on the buses/trains.

And hearing the jets flying overhead just makes it seem all the more real in a way.

Like I said...I'm a wuss Blush

I love fighter jets.

Years ago I was at sea on a ship for an RN families' day - we were having an exciting flying display with helicopters doing all manner of noisy things.

It was announced that there was to be a fly-past of some Tornando aircraft. The Tannoy stated that they were about 10 miles away.

I thought, in my stupidity; "Oooh I've probably just got time for a w..."

FFFFFFWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH

.

.

Well, at least I didn't need to go two decks down to the loo any longer Blush

mumofjust1 · 05/05/2012 22:59

I live near RAF Northolt and they went over here a while ago - so bloody loud

VickityBoo · 05/05/2012 23:00

We have giant double propellor military helicopters fly over us - sometimes they appear as if they're going to head right into the house. Windows shake etc.

Can be very scary but then I watched way too many war films as a youngster (thanks dad!)

LentillyFart · 05/05/2012 23:01

The only thing flying over here tonight is the Police helicopter. Just like every other night! I'd love to hear the Tornados - so worra - YABU and get a grip!

Grin
WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 23:01

LadyWithEDS · 05/05/2012 23:01

Phone up RAF Northolt and complain, if enough people complain they will slow down a bit! How can they learn the landscape going fast anyways?

mumofjust1 · 05/05/2012 23:01

Oooh LadywithEDS - we are in the same neck of the woods then Smile

wishiwasonholiday · 05/05/2012 23:02

I live near an old raf base but the jets fly over here all the time and helicopters and sometimes passenger jets. It can be very scary to go in the garden and there's a plane really low over the house, the kids love it though, the raf helicopter sometimes has a man at the door who waves.

LadyWithEDS · 05/05/2012 23:04

Mumofjust1, I had the misfortune to have to drive down the A40 on Thursday, it has been knocked down from 3 lanes to 2 lanes each way, so that the police could drive up and down the 3rd lane, the traffic was dreadfull!

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 23:05

Oh I love wavy Soldiers, Police and Fire fighters Grin

TalcAndTurnips · 05/05/2012 23:06

I like Wokka-wokkas too.

You can feel them inside your entrails Confused

mumofjust1 · 05/05/2012 23:06

LadyWithEDS the A40 is a nightmare! I know it was a lane down and luckily didn't have to use it, but at the best if times it's a pain

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 23:07

A Whata-whata?? Confused

AhsataN · 05/05/2012 23:07

i can hear them to, i have been watching jets all day fly over the fields at the stables. so now i know what mumsnetters live close by to me Smile

VivaLeBeaver · 05/05/2012 23:07

They do scare me a bit. The jets here are a bit accident prone. I remember as a kid one crashing into a house in the village. There have been other minor mid air collisions in the past few years as well as more serious accidents.

When they're practising for hours on end over where you live it does cross your mind that one might drop on your head.

I've seen them so low that I've waved to the pilot and he waved back! He was coming in to land and it seems like they only just clear the roof of my friends house on the landing path.

kingbeat23 · 05/05/2012 23:08

I've heard them too worra and it did make me think Hmm I do live absurdly close to the stadium, I also work near the stadium and DD goes to nursery near the stadium. I only thank fuck that I managed to transfer near the other side of the borough when I did as I would be in 10 minutes walking distance from it and then I would be REALLY cacking my pants.

At the moment though, I'm more worried about travelling to and from work than the use of fighter jets, although I too thought, please don't put anything on my block as the fuckers would've had that unbolted and sold as soon as peoples backs were turned!

TalcAndTurnips · 05/05/2012 23:10

Worra - Chinooks - one goes over my house pretty much every day. The thudding goes right through you!

GrahamTribe · 05/05/2012 23:11

hidden, I used to live in a remote village in the N Pennines and the Typhoons and Eurofighter would swoop over regularly. I loved watching them but the noise scared the shit out of me every time! I now live near other airbases and an area where there are several airshows so I see them all regularly. I love the engineering and sheer beauty of them, hate what they do in the theatre of war and must confess that if I were in central London I'd be a bit concerned about what would happen should the shit hit the fan.

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 23:11

kingbeat I can just imagine seeing it strapped to the back of some poor Staffie...while the owner makes a deal with the scrap metal man Grin

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 23:12

Ahhh gotcha Talc I've seen them where my mate lives in Norfolk.

OP posts:
kingbeat23 · 05/05/2012 23:17

Yeah, but they've closed all the scrappies down now. Carpenters Road is all nice flats, olympic village, Westfield....damn that Olympics for getting rid of dodgy fridge mountains leaking waste toxic fumes over the land Grin

footphobic · 05/05/2012 23:18

We live under the flight path of various RAF/USAF bases, we have jets and Apaches coming over a day or two most weeks, more of the helicopters in recent months...they often spend about 30mins-1 hour doing various training manoeuvres and off they go. Sometimes they are very low, and if the jets are very low and fast the noise is incredible and will catch me out at times, have lived here 18 years and still run and look as I love watching them. assume this slightly strange behaviour caused by watching Top Gun too many times as a teenager

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 23:19

It's ok, they sent them to Dagenham Grin

OP posts:
VickityBoo · 05/05/2012 23:19

That's it, Chinooks. God we get loads - sometimes they go round, and round, and round...

Window shakers they are and yes, sometimes we can see little men in there lol.

Always had an odd fear of choppers dropping bombs (again, films to blame I suspect) and I still get nervous.

WorraLiberty · 05/05/2012 23:21

I think what it is (for me anyway) is that I love going to air shows and I love seeing all the military things.

But as we never get that sort of thing here in a 'working' role...tis a bit scary because it kind of drums the whole serious threat home.
