Typhoon Fighter Jets flying overhead (Olympics) I'm a great big wuss...

Oh I know I'm being unreasonable really but every time I hear the deafening sound of RAF fighter jets flying overhead...like they were 10 minutes ago (which they only seem to do at night??) it scares the beejayzus out of me Sad

I live less than 10 mins on a train from the Olympic Stadium and worry that if they have to shoot anything out of the sky...they're going to do it over my house?!? Blush

I admit to laughing when I read they're going to store surface-to-air missiles on the roof of a block of council flats near the stadium...but it's not funny really!

Well ok it was a bit funny cos I know the block of flats they mean and all I can say is they're going to need to bolt them down, or they'll find they've been nicked and replaced with a block of bricks Grin

Anyway, the thought of a terrorist attack (God forbid) is a very worrying one...whether it's in the sky or on the buses/trains.

And hearing the jets flying overhead just makes it seem all the more real in a way.

Like I said...I'm a wuss Blush

Apparently yesterday's exercise was to test the procedures in case anyone breaches the restricted airspace...so yes I see what you mean AmbeLeaf, though one would hope they'd intercept them before they get that near to the Stadium!

I think it's just all posturing- making it obvious that we won't be messed with. The skies will be under pretty close surveillance by air traffic control. There won't be anything getting that close to London.

WorraLiberty · 06/05/2012 11:45

Has anyone warned Paul the Pigeon? Shock

Blimey - RAF jets out on a Saturday, the RAF usually shuts down at 3pm on a friday! Grin

Stellarforstar · 06/05/2012 12:02

I love a good sonic boom.

I don't think Paul will be impressed, though.

LadyWithEDS · 06/05/2012 12:05

I have just heard them again!

LadyWithEDS · 06/05/2012 12:06

I think that is three of them in the air now!

squeakytoy · 06/05/2012 12:10

They are going over us now.. cloud too low to see them where we are though...

WorraLiberty · 06/05/2012 12:16

Squeaky it's supposed to be happening until May 10th so get your camera ready.

I love your photos!

I live just near where they make them so I am so used to them this thread is like people getting excited at seeing a bus :)

(mind you - I would actually get excited if I saw a big, red London routemaster thing which much be pretty meh to all of you I guess)

catgirl1976 · 06/05/2012 12:22

Great photos squeaky

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 06/05/2012 12:23

A year ago I was living 5 mins walk from a Tornado base - not fun!! Angry

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 06/05/2012 12:25

lolling @ flying typhoos Grin

squeakytoy · 06/05/2012 12:26

I love going climbing in the lake district and being at the top of one of the peaks, looking down on jets flying below in the valleys...

ChuffMuffin · 06/05/2012 12:27

I was really looking forward to going to see the Olympics until I started reading about all these surface to air missiles and now biohazard terrorist drones Shock.

I do love fighter jets though. I saw a start up at an air show years ago, it felt like the world was ending!

WorraLiberty · 06/05/2012 12:28

Love the photos!

catgirl it's a mixture of excitement and bloody worry Grin

The SAMs really shocked me! Made me wonder how serious a threat there is :(

squeakytoy · 06/05/2012 12:33

I would say there is a very high risk unfortunately. But at least we are prepared.

EnjoyResponsibly · 06/05/2012 12:37

I'm happy with practicing every conceivable way of keeping us all safe during the Olympics.

I'm fervently hoping that practicing the identification and halting fucking fanatics people with grievances is as diligent on the ground as it is in the air. I'm quite happy to have a surface to air whatsit on my roof.

Bearing in mind that 7/7 occurred the day after we won the bid, I can't help think that it's in someone's mind to pull a repeat during the Games or Diamond Jubilee celebratons.

catgirl1976 · 06/05/2012 12:39

Yes - as unpleasant as it must be to see the jets etc at least they give some reassurance that things are being done. And that's just what we can see / know about. I bet there is loads of super clever behind the scenes stuff being done to make everything safe.

DreamingofSummer · 06/05/2012 12:39

Security theatre - no more, no less

ChuffMuffin · 06/05/2012 12:43

Exactly, I think the Government are probably using all the focus on London and the Olympics to remind the rest of the world that we're still not a force to be reckoned with, if that makes sense.

ChuffMuffin · 06/05/2012 12:44

oops a force to be reckoned with not a force not to be reckoned with.

AmberLeaf · 06/05/2012 12:52

I visit Norfolk a lot catgirl so im used to seeing them flyover, its just not the norm to see it in London!

See Worra! thats why im worried! so if someone did breach the airspace ban Shock well I cant imagine....but if a plane had to be shot down then lots of people would get hurt as wherever you are in London there are lots of people!

We can hear them now too and have just been discussing imaginary scenarios where a plane crashes just up the road and what that would be like...for me terrifying for my DS 15 yrs absolutely amazing
