Typhoon Fighter Jets flying overhead (Olympics) I'm a great big wuss...

Oh I know I'm being unreasonable really but every time I hear the deafening sound of RAF fighter jets flying overhead...like they were 10 minutes ago (which they only seem to do at night??) it scares the beejayzus out of me Sad

I live less than 10 mins on a train from the Olympic Stadium and worry that if they have to shoot anything out of the sky...they're going to do it over my house?!? Blush

I admit to laughing when I read they're going to store surface-to-air missiles on the roof of a block of council flats near the stadium...but it's not funny really!

Well ok it was a bit funny cos I know the block of flats they mean and all I can say is they're going to need to bolt them down, or they'll find they've been nicked and replaced with a block of bricks Grin

Anyway, the thought of a terrorist attack (God forbid) is a very worrying one...whether it's in the sky or on the buses/trains.

And hearing the jets flying overhead just makes it seem all the more real in a way.

Like I said...I'm a wuss Blush

I remember hearing the dog barking in the back garden once, something she never normally did. When I went out I could see nothing she might be barking at until a voice from above shouted "Alright love...nice dog" and I looked up to see two sailors in a Fly Navy hot air balloon waving at us. Made my day too Grin

FuckingSaggyOldClothCatPuss · 08/05/2012 22:28

Chinooks

The Sea King was pottering about over Manningtree today. It was reply low! I got rather excited! Grin

topknob · 08/05/2012 22:30

wish I'd seen this the other day..they did a little display over our area which is right by the airfield in Suffolk :) fuckers scared the shit out of me ! until I heard about the practices for the olympics on the radio :o

topknob · 08/05/2012 22:31

saggy I'm in Halstead, we get the apaches and chinooks going over, very low all the time :) x

WorraLiberty · 08/05/2012 22:33

Oh wow @ the Navy hot air balloon! Shock

I ran out and shouted at dh to come out and we saw two of them briefly flying about in various directions :) it's is the noise that gets me...they are doing a fab job at protecting us :) but I do love seeing them. Just a month ago we had two apaches hoovering over a field at the end of our road...this made us v v suss but we went on the theory they were doing it to protect us...I did might have taken photos of them :o .

And I won't mention the time a few years back a fighter jet scared the shit out of me going over my house very f*cking low ! Think someone was having a joly :o

Bettyonholiday · 08/05/2012 22:40

This post is kinda scaring me... Also live close to Olympics. Seen all the stuff about the missiles... Really hope nothing lands on us!! We Have the police helicopter going over all the time so used to annoying noises in the sky!

Horsemad · 08/05/2012 22:44

Living as close as I do to a Typhoon base, I don't notice them when they are flying, but always notice if it's been a quiet day and I haven't heard any!

They are flying here tonight, so quite loud :)

Meglet · 08/05/2012 23:07

We get Chinooks all the time. I get most excited by the Apaches though, especially if they fly 2 or 3 at a time.

PorkyandBess · 08/05/2012 23:10

Ooh! I saw something flying very fast today, it looked like a small Concorde. I was very distracted in my car, trying to look at it.

Was it a fighter jet?

(In Herts, btw)

Horsemad · 08/05/2012 23:13

Probably Porky :)

WorriedBetty · 08/05/2012 23:13

You should live where I do, there is a bank of long range anti-aircraft guns and powerful gun batteries that can target individual buildings and/or take out a square KM. I don't live near London! Also there are scanner loops being placed inside railway tunnels and bridges near major venues, and some new sidings on rail routes so that a running train can be diverted off and searched with sniffer dogs etc, then sent merrily on its way. Some of these are inside tunnels so they can't be scoped by satellite.

Its all a bit scary, but reassuring at the same time.

WorriedBetty · 08/05/2012 23:16

Ooh Apaches.. My friend's daughter was in the OTC and did a presentation on Apaches.. They are one scary machine.. They can hover ABSOLUTELY still, or pop up, locate several targets in a few seconds, take them out then pop down again. ... from several KM away.

When I say individual targets.. yes I also do mean 'individuals'. They can target a moving body by infra-red and, say take out the passenger and leave the driver alive FROM SEVERAL km AWAY..

Scaaaary!!

WorraLiberty · 08/05/2012 23:18

Porky Yes, probably a Typhoon

I saw HMS Ocean parked at Greenwich yesterday, with all of the helicopters on the deck. There were fast boats full of men wearing black helmets bombing up and down the Thames around the Dome. Take it the practise is going well!

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 09/05/2012 17:49

HMS Ocean brings back memories, my husband was serving on it when we got married. If they have an open day try and go have a look around the ship. It's really very interesting.

blueshoes · 09/05/2012 19:27

I would have liked to see that, aj. I live in Greenwich.

I saw them a couple of weeks ago when I was on a school outing....they looked like Ninjas speeding up and down.

I was so happy when they waved at me at the kids Grin

I saw/heard loads today and watched some doing manoeuvres for a good few minutes this morning! I'm nowhere near London or anything Olympic-y - in fact I think we're one of the least likely terrorist targets you can imagine.

ajandjjmum · 10/05/2012 13:55

They had an open day last weekend NoOnes - I wasn't in London then, although I doubt I'd have queued!

Blueshoes - it's in Greenwich still - I drove round to Island Pool Park (?) and saw it from there. I think there's security practise going on all week. I feel a bit guilty that I find it quite exciting! Blush Back in the Midlands now, where it's all very boring!

difficultpickle · 11/05/2012 08:38

The ninjas were by Tower Bridge yesterday lunch time. They just seemed to be going up and down the river as fast as they could. I'd love a job like that!
