Mumsnet and McDonalds

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

i would Stake My Life that the OP's DH had a Big Mac.

margoandjerry · 03/05/2012 10:10

bettybat perhaps you don't live where I do but name me the restaurant or cafe where you can get a perfectly ok meal for three plus drinks all round for under £8? I started using McDs when I went out with the DCs to do some shopping, we popped into a local, quite nice but basically greasy spoon cafe for lunch and came out £30 poorer.

And before you assume things about me, I am quite interested in food, quite a good cook, make only healthy food at home. We don't even have fruit juice at home. But I just can't see what's so bad about the occasional McD. I can of course see that if McD appeared in your diet more than, say, once or twice a month, it might become problematic. And of course lots of people do use it more than that. So that could be a problem. But I really have come around to it - I think they provide a good service for parents.

bettybat · 03/05/2012 10:10

Really - what is everyone's issue with me not wanting to eat Macdonalds? What's wrong with me choosing to support local businesses?

Tiredmumno1 · 03/05/2012 10:11

That made me giggle worra Grin

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 10:11

DD has just got a job in Macdonalds.

First thing she told me was that behind the scenes was very clean and would meet with my standards.

She is thrilled with her discount card. Grin

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 10:12

Ha Worra that is funny! But the point I was trying to make was not how shit the food is, but how and why Mumsnet have done such a volte face and decided maccy d's does suddenly sit well with their philosophy? And why are they still pretending they havent nearly a year later?

And yes, the whole pooing and surfing thing isn't great. And it is DH who uses the facilities. He can crap anywhere. And I mean anywhere. My sphincter is a bit more discerning...

BupcakesandCunting · 03/05/2012 10:12

DH and I talk to each other in the style of Begbie from Trainspotting. Or Mick and Jimmy Corkkkkhill from Brookkkkkkkieeee. We are HILARIOUS. As you can imagine.

bogeyface · 03/05/2012 10:13

Nothing Betty, its your choice. What is your issue with the fact that everyone else wants to?!

And I have worked in "local businesses" and I can tell you that the provenance of their food is far dodgier in many cases than McDs. My ex worked there for years and he has no problem with the kids eating there.

margoandjerry · 03/05/2012 10:13

bogeyface don't mess with me on La Margo Grin. She's Margo. My DD on the other hand is Margot because I really am pretentious Grin

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 10:14

Buppy I am going to start a thread about it.

We are DAFT. Me and dd always shout Norbet Dentressangle in cod French accents when we see on of their lorries. It is a bit embarrassing when I do it when in a car with my colleague.

Tiredmumno1 · 03/05/2012 10:14

Tatty have you message MNHQ and asked them Grin

bogeyface · 03/05/2012 10:15

OP, perhaps it was just a simple oversight and that now it has been brought to their attention, MNHQ will remove that info from the site? Maybe, just maybe, they forgot it was there rather than a deliberate attempt to mislead...?

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 10:15

Exactly local church run cafe get their burgers deliverd by brake brothers and the reason they taste so much of iron is because of all the groudn down bone and awful used to make up the burger weight, At least at Mc'D's you know in most european countries that it is 100% Beef in the burger. so you can't go wrong there.

What is the point of the Mclibel link. That case became irrelevant long before the judgement which won the claimants nothing. Fries are cooked in vegetable shortening not animal.

HokeyCokeyPigInaPokey · 03/05/2012 10:16

I had McDonalds for breakfast and lunch one day this week...was lovely, you can't beat a double egg & bacon mcmuffin in the morning.

That was a one off, a treat, if i did it all the time i would have an arse the size of Wales.

They are not selling drugs, if you don't like it don't go in there the queues will be shorter and people like me will get served quicker

AnAirOfHope · 03/05/2012 10:17

I find it fun to go to macds or kfc and ask for a salad. It takes them at less five minutes to find it on the till. I have started timing them now lol.

Its all about picking the healthy choice. Im on a diet but my dh and son are trying to put wieght on so we go there a few times a month.

I like the coffee and my son likes the play area.

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 10:17

i would Stake My Life that the OP's DH had a Big Mac

My theory is there's a secret room just off of the men's toilets where they go to eat their Maccy Dee's away from their disapproving wives.

If anyone gets caught, the standard excuse is they were watching porn and having a wank....but they were NOT eating junk food Grin

HokeyCokeyPigInaPokey · 03/05/2012 10:18

Oh and obviously in answer to the op i don't care if MN are associated with them, makes no difference to me.

AnAirOfHope · 03/05/2012 10:18

Also it might get more pearents to have a look at mumsnet and that can only be a good thing right :)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:19

everyone's being a bit mean to battybat, i think. all she's done is say that the rolls are cack (true) and that she doesn't want to eat there. re the local cafe, there are ones round here where the food (veggies probably from a cash and carry, more likely lidl) is made up in front of you, but you do pay through the nose for them.

what went on at maccy d's that put you off, batty?

bettybat · 03/05/2012 10:20

bogeyface I'm not sure I have written anything that says I have an issue with what anyone else does? I did say:

Anyway, I don't have anything against people who like and eat it - it's just not my choice.

I really thought I'd made it clear in my posts I thought it was up to Mumsnet what they did, that it's up to individuals what they choose to eat, but I was stating my own choices?

At worst - I said people in general seem to get perturbed, and some might even say defensive, when you say you choose not to eat Macdonalds. Which - judging on you thinking I take issue with people choosing to eat Macdonalds when I have been very careful not to say anything of the sort - actually seems about right.

somewherewest · 03/05/2012 10:21

Lets admit it. The real reason some MNers get so Hmm about MaccyD's is that its a little...how shall I put this...chavy.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:22

also, betty, how old are your children? i never went to macdonalds until one of mine started at school. she never pestered me to go there, it's just that her appetite went through the roof and it's suuuuuuuch a cheap way of filling them up when you can't be arsed cooking.

i really know exactly why i go to mcdonald's. it's not because i like the food, it's because if i'm going to give them shite, it might as well be cheap shite. [mother of the year]

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:23

it's not chavvy round our way... it's LOVELY. seriously. all done up and pristine clean. Grin

bintofbohemia · 03/05/2012 10:24

bettybat - I'm with you; any company still feeding people hydrogenated fats don't give a flying crap about the health of their customers. I've boycotted McD's for over 15 years, apart from their approach to animal welfare them feeding products cooked in beef fat to Hindus when they opened in India and not telling them struck me as particularly shit.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:24

yes, that was appalling.
