Mumsnet and McDonalds

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

squeakytoy · 03/05/2012 10:30

the site went down then as MNHQ realised that MaccyD's breakfast menu was about to finish, so they all rushed out to get their sausage and egg mcmuffins... Wink

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 10:31

any company still feeding people hydrogenated fats don't give a flying crap about the health of their customers

And should they? Confused

I'm a grown woman. My health and the health of my children is down to me when it comes to diet.

Do alcohol companies give a flying crap?

Or any other business that sells less than healthy foods for that matter.

How about cake companies or companies who sell....I don't know, jam for example??

We're all responsible for our own health and the health of our children when it comes to what we choose to put inside our bodies.

It's not down to random businesses.

Waitrose put High Fructose Corn Syrup in their own brand mayonnaise. Waitrose, people, Waitrose. For heaven's sake, can we do nothing to stop these monsters? [sob]

btw it's disgusting and I immediately went back to buying Hellmans which is of course delicious and utterly healthy.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:35

i like lidl's mayo, it's just like the stuff you got on your first ever forrin holiday. must check if it's got corn syrup in it.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 10:36

There are plenty of healthy options at McD's and if you want to avoid the HFCS then there are plenty of alternatives to eat there healthily many times a week.

The people who are not usually a healthy weight are usually the ones who fail to take responsibility for their own poor ratio of active life style to portion size on their plates. Also known as 'curvy' people.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 10:36

It's quicker to make mayo!!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:37

IT DOES NOT! another win for lidl!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:37

nah, can't be arsed. [mother of year]

squeakytoy · 03/05/2012 10:39

We have reduced the saturated fat in the oil used to cook our fries by 35% and we've removed all hydrogenated oils from our entire menu

again, another myth busted Grin

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 10:41

squeaky can you work on turning water into wine? Grin

LentillyFart · 03/05/2012 10:42

Now that shit - High Fructose Corn Syrup - THAT is something to get worked up about. Very very bad stuff and well worth a bit of Googling.

porcamiseria · 03/05/2012 10:42

so what? really?

its burgers not napalm

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 10:42

You and Jade Goody and Jordan. A triumvirate of.........

LentillyFart · 03/05/2012 10:43

And yes - make your own mayo. Quick, easy and delicious but - get some counselling first because - steady now! - it contains raw egg yolk!

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:43

good work, squeaky. that ingredients list on the buns is still FUBAR, though. flour, yeast, water, oil, anyone?

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:44

lol, novack. i think you forgot kerry katona. Grin

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 10:44

Funnily enough Napalm does contain HFCS.

squeakytoy · 03/05/2012 10:45

I wish Worra... Grin

My only complaint is that they dont sell Root Beer in McD's in the UK... or have unlimited drink dispensers....

The USA has a far better fast food operation... if only we could get Arbys over here I would happily give up my McDonalds fixes..

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 10:45

I never know who she is. Although i do think that all those Can Associates clients are like Badoo. Once you join you can shag any other member without regrets.

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 10:46

I think it's appalling to be frank. Can't be arsed to list the reasons why.I and several others have done this repeatedly and MN just aren't prepared to listen preferring the MCBuck. This issue is pretty much the only beef(if you'll pardon the pun ) I have with MN so I let it go.

What I will say is obesity is crippling the NHS.Many parents want a pre watershed ban on fastfood advertising(as reported by the BBC).Given that MN plays such a big part in the lives of mothers I think it's shameful that they don't support the urgent need for healthier food given to many young children and do all that they can to support parents not all of whom will have the benefits of an educated view on healthy eating for children.

Giving a huge amount of space to pretty wholesome McD adverts which can easily dupe many parents into thinking a Happy Meal is a healthy food choice is completely wrong.

"Proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant"-bet all the NHS consultants struggling to cope with the obesity epidemic and all it brings are really thankful for that MN.

bintofbohemia · 03/05/2012 10:47

Lots of companies are finally coming around to the fact that it is their duty not to sell products containing hydrogenated fats. It's all well and good saying that people should take responsibility for their own health - sure, in an ideal world, but in reality lots of people just aren't educated or aware of these issues and what they really eat.

100 years ago people used to put babies in lead lined prams and eat foods that were given artificial colouring from highly toxic metals. People tend to assume that they buy things in good faith and that companies won't knowingly use substances that are likely to seriously injure our health, but with hydrogenated fats that just isn't true.

Tiredmumno1 · 03/05/2012 10:48

Oh yes it's all MN's fault Hmm

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:49

yeah, the 'proud' thing is a bit awkward, granted. i wouldn't say i'm proud to take the kids there... it just fills a hole cheaply. and the brownies... man alive. food of the gods.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 10:50

bint, there are no hydrogenated fats on the maccy's menu now. all gone.

MissPricklePants · 03/05/2012 10:50

Mcds joined the Mn family friendly wi-fi programme, as Mcds have placed filters on the free wifi to stop inappropriates stuff being viewed. It is not MN supporting the food or letting children gorge on it. Although I can see how it appears that way. www.mcdonalds.co.uk/ukhome/Restaurants/Free-WiFi.html
