Mumsnet and McDonalds

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 08:13

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

OP posts:

I love me a McDonalds
We are going there tomorrow as a treat!

LentillyFart · 03/05/2012 09:40

OP - you need to get a grip. Nobody died and put you in charge of who eats what or where they eat it. Mind your own and get down off your high horse.

squeakytoy · 03/05/2012 09:41

Betty... so dont eat the bun then.... they do have a fairly wide range of products, and plenty of healthy options!

MarvellousYou · 03/05/2012 09:41

They still add salt to their chips here too. But I lick it off the three chips DS will actually eat, I'm a dedicated mum don't you know Wink

AIBUqatada · 03/05/2012 09:42

That's a bit harsh lentil. The op's worry was that MN still had some text up saying they don't accept McD advertising. If that is true then it is a bit ludicrous. Perhaps it is an error on the mobile version of the site. I certainly can't see any text of that sort still remaining on the version of the site that I use with my desktop.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 03/05/2012 09:43

MN is a great company, and I like the fact that they give it's users enough credibility to make their own descisons about what their children eat. We are not all that stupid that we are going to go out and start feeding our dc McDs every day just because MN have some kind of affiliation with them.

MN is a site for parents, and in my opinion, it is good parenting to teach our children how to make healthy choices about the food they eat. That is almost impossible to to if they are only ever exposed to properly healthy food. They need to see and eat unhealthy food to be able to learn to make balanced and reasonable and responsible choices about what they eat when they no longer have their parents dictating what they are allowed, because without that, they won't understand why they can't have it, they will just understand that Mum says no. Which is the quickest route to rebellion.

And I didn't even know MN had any sort of affiliation with McDs until you started this thread anyway.

EnjoyResponsibly · 03/05/2012 09:44

Well, who knew that's why we boycott Nestle, I thought it was because the chocolate totally blew!

OP, really, in the scheme of things it's not that bad. Let's face it the average McD customers probably not going to have a scooby who Mumsnet is unless there're all Matthew Wright researchers.

McDs really haven't got the best end of this advertising deal, but it's their £££'s.

And for the record, the Quarter pounders are totally lush (and I bet that's the real reason that DH was there Grin)

mummytime · 03/05/2012 09:45

OP I know the government says Obesity is our biggest worry.
And for me individually it probably is what I should be worrying about for myself. AlThough McD makes negligible impact on my weight problem.

For my kids I am far more worried about Anorexia, having 3 skinny kids, two of whom describe themselves as "fat" or "needing to lose weight", one of whom is only 8! I really wish the government would lay off the obesity message, as it is not helping.

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 09:45

I am pretty sure that they still salt the chips round our way.

I don't care anyway. Gimme more salt.

I totally agree with the fact that it is bollocks food (especially the high fructose corn syrup which is acknowledged as terribkle food) and if you ate it every day it would be a terrible diet. But as a once in a blue moon treat it is fine.

ZZZenAgain · 03/05/2012 09:46

why can't they use different bread without all that crap in it?

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 09:49

TOTALLY agree about the obesity message being bollocks. dd was freaking out about eating a mcdonald's last time, despite the fact that in the previous week not a morsel of processed food had touched her lips. her fear? that she would get fat. grrr.

not to mention the fact that there is a girl in her class who basically has an utterly shit diet and who is piling on the weight at a startling pace, so all this healthy eating crap totally stigmatizes her through no fault of her own. take all the money you'd have spent on posters and divert it towards helping that wee girl's family, i say.

perceptionreality · 03/05/2012 09:49

oh fgs.......so what?

It's McDonalds. Not a terrorist organisation. Also agree with whoever said that if you have such strong opinions about a fast food restaurant why on earth would you want to use their facilities??

EnjoyResponsibly · 03/05/2012 09:51

Thanks to this thread, this lunchtime every McD in the land will now be populated by women with pushchairs, dressed head to foot in Boden with Big Hair do's wrapped in leopard print scarves.

bettybat · 03/05/2012 09:51

Squeakytoy Ummm no I'm good thanks. I just don't eat there. I really don't see what the issue is - when you mention you don't eat stuff like that, people seem to get very perturbed. Almost something like defensiveness Wink

The oil they cook their meat in, the high sugar/high salt content of their dips, and more than all that - the principle of it, my principle. But then again, when I say I don't intend to encourage my children to have anything like that, you'd think I was saying I want them to hunt, kill and gut their own food.

Macdonalds can't have it both ways - healthy offerings amidst such massively bad crap. They do not represent anything like healthy, nutritious food - what they did do was put in some fruit and veg, and dress it up as healthy when it's actually dripping in sugar and salt. People see low cal and think it must be healthy.

Anyway, I don't have anything against people who like and eat it - it's just not my choice.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 09:51

with hairy ankles...

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 09:52

McDonalds do not cause obesity

But people who can't seem to eat things in moderation as part of a healthy diet often do.

I absolutely love McDonalds, KFC, Greggs and Pizza (not at the same time!)

I'm not obese and nor is any member of my family.

CrispyCod · 03/05/2012 09:52

It's McDonalds. Not a terrorist organisation

Actually, there used to be a rumour going round years back that McDonalds used to fund the IRA. I imagine it was investigated and put to rest.

squeakytoy · 03/05/2012 09:53

Let's face it the average McD customers probably not going to have a scooby who Mumsnet is unless there're all Matthew Wright researchers

what rubbish!

As for crap food... it would seem clear to me that some of you are judging without even knowing what the menu in McDonalds offers..

fruit, porridge, salads, wraps, various types of bread, fish, chicken... and guess what, you can actually ask for no ketchup, or no mayo, and reduce the salt and sugar content considerably..

BupcakesandCunting · 03/05/2012 09:53

DS and I are going to McDonald's today. I made the mistake of telling him he could choose where to go for lunch today. Being the buffoon I am, I thought he would choose Pizza Express or Giraffe.

I will probably just get a coffee definitely not a Big Mac followed by a cheeseburger for pudding, definitely not

YABU. It's just shit food innit? It's not skag.

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 09:56

Ha I have just looked it up - the bloke who played Prince Charles was in Chariots of Fire, and Kristin Scott-Thomas's sister played Carole Middleton. Ha!

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 09:56

Fucking norah - wrong thread, sorry.

I am still talking about watching William and Kate: The Movie Blush

Tiredmumno1 · 03/05/2012 09:57

I bet William and Kate it maccy d's as well Wink Grin

Tiredmumno1 · 03/05/2012 09:58

eat doh

squeakytoy · 03/05/2012 09:58

I thought he would choose Pizza Express.... probably more salt, fat and less nutrition than anything in McDonalds Grin

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 09:58

God buppy don't go to Giraffe.

It's a pile o' shite.
