Mumsnet and McDonalds

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 08:13

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

i really hate the 'perspective, people' 'first world problems' type posts, tbh, it's such a stupid point to make. i'd warrant that people who care about this stuff are doing more than most. the type of person who gives a shit about minor stuff tends also to care about the major. (not me. Grin [entirely disaffected])

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 20:47

fgs companies don't advertise unless they can chart rising sales to justify it. Hmm

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 20:47

Because I am a relatively recent mumsnetter, love the site, believed the blurb about philosophy etc and was bloody shocked at the mcdonalds connection.

I thought the issue with maccy d's was the corporation itself - like tesco, p&g - the way they do business?

Am veggie so hardly part of their key market but prob have something from there a couple of times a year

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 20:49

I heart the guardian too.. That's at least three readers..

Umm strawberry milkshake.....

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 20:52

Yup, LeQueen, that's about it.
But only if your'e 'working class', then you'll believe everything you read.
Thank fuck there are posters on this thread that want to protect them from this evil Hmm

MarianneM · 03/05/2012 20:52

BTW, going back to the Jamie Oliver school dinners campaign, can anyone really say that this isn't a vast improvement on a school menu:

The old Greenwich menu ...

Burgers and chips

Sausage rolls

Fish fingers

Drumstick-shaped turkey nuggets

Chicken nuggets

And the new one

Roast beef and all the trimmings

Mushroom and lentil bake

Mexican bean wrap

Lamb and vegetable pie

Creamy coconut fish

Aitch I can honestly say mcdonalds adverts dont make me want to go there. I have been going to mcdonalds since u was a child and the only adverts I used to see were on the back on bus tickets. Even then I never went because of the bus ticket. More recently theres been the happy meal adverts in tv with the 2 women dancing the funky chicken dance. They have not made me want to go to mcdonalds. I never plan to go to mcdonalds. I only ever go if im hungry and happen to walk past it and I think to myself I fancy a big mac. So no, advertising does not encourage people.

southeastastra · 03/05/2012 20:54

i think it's quite encouraging that some people on here care about something even if some get confused about why they care so much

maxtrue · 03/05/2012 21:03

Think some of the comments on here are hilarious!

Just wanted to add that (apart from morning sickness cravings for cheeseburgers and the odd hangover cure - not while preggers mind) I dont eat Maccad's and I AM FAT....dont eat any fast food just too much "normal" food (if u call biscuits and crisps normal Hmm

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 21:05

"So no, advertising does not encourage people."

well that is just about the silliest thing i have ever heard. Grin

PoohBearsHole · 03/05/2012 21:06

Advertising if anything devalues a product to me. It is probably just me though I do appreciate that Grin, I find the more money spent on an advert the less I respect the company and would go there!

Although I am a sucker for some adverts (the children/dog/cat abuse ones) but still don't pick up the phone immediately to donate so am obviously not a target audience.

I do however like but probably just because of the music.

(will run now as dh has just looked at buying an audi Hmm but not because of that advert I hasten to add and it wouldn't look like either of the ones in the add!)

PoohBearsHole · 03/05/2012 21:06

Hmm ad obviously

i don't, personally, no. but i think that suggesting that the existence of other negative things in the world should preclude someone who is inclined to care is just stupid. a normal person can care about A Lot of stuff, all at the same time.

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 21:14

But does it encourage you Aitch?
This is the third time I've asked on this thread, but I'll ask again and maybe get an answer.
All the anti advertising posters on here seem to think it applies to others, not themselves.
So surely if your'e all capable of making a decision, we all are.
Or is everybody in the world thicker more easily lead than you?

southeastastra · 03/05/2012 21:16

the decision has been made anyway

find it funny that peope get all cats bum mouth at the fact that not everyone thinks the mds advertising on here is a good thing

if you don't care leq, why are you getting all Hmm on this thread about it Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 21:17

me? of course i'm susceptible to advertising, absolutely 100% definitely. i didn't think you were actually asking, the answer's so obvious. marketing's a bizillion-dollar industry, fgs.

5madthings · 03/05/2012 21:17

i personally dont give a shit about the advertising, i have the occasional mc donalds as well Shock

but i do get annoyed with the attitude on here that we can all make an informed choice but we 'need to save those poor deluded types that cant'

or basically what ladbeagle said Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 21:19

oh btw lbe, i'm not anti-advertising at all. or anti-mcd's. i think perhaps you have me confused with someone else.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 21:19

lequeen you do know kitkats are Nestle don't you :)

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 03/05/2012 21:22

Seriously what is this nestle shit about?
