Mumsnet and McDonalds

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 08:13

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

MUMSNET is a site for grown fully functioning adults. Kids should not be using this site at all. I consider us women to be intelligent enough to ignore the adverts and companies, if they so choose. If one wishes to go and eat the entire empire of the evil clown menu it is really up to them. I used to be v anti EofEC but as my meat hating dd will happily stuff a cheeseburger full of protein and iron into her, along with bag of fruit apple slices and grapes, and a bottle of organic milk, I frankly no longer give a shit, and am happy to go there if it means avoiding anaemia, and getting much needed calories into her.
Kids are being blown up in Syria, and starving in india africa etc, and we're getting anal about a frigging fast food joint?? Perspective, please...

bogeyface · 03/05/2012 19:47

Lost the will to live but......

Am I right in thinking that McDs dont actually advertise on MN?

Isnt this all about the fact that free wi-fi in there is supported by MN? Sooooo........the people seeing MN are ALREADY IN MACDONALDS and in fact MN are using McDs to get people to the site rather than McDs using the site to get people into their outlets?

I would therefore suggest to my learned (and not so) colleagues, that frothing about MN promoting junk food is pointless as they are not doing so.

5madthings · 03/05/2012 19:49

ah yes i think i saw the mnet update but skim read it, sowhat exactly does it say when you use the wifi connection at mcdonalds.... may see for myself next time i am in there, but NOT on the toilet!

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 19:51

Yes bogey you are correct.

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 19:55

Lady I'm not obese,I don't have obese kids,I was lucky enough to be well educated re food and I'm not a junk food addict.I'm not swayed by junk food advertising but many will be just as many were with tobacco advertising.

Some experts believe obesity is responsible for more ill health than smoking, obesity is serious for the sufferer. Many sufferers are addicted to junk food and any endorsement will be an excuse for consumption. Obesity is rocketing in young children.

I just think there are other places MN could get money from. They could put out for advertising suggestions from us,there must be many ways they could be creative and actually do good(say in literacy, food, the environment etc) whilst making money.I simply don't believe they need to advertise McD and they're being a tad lazy.I feel as Justine has illustrated that MN welcomes all views.

LtEveDallas · 03/05/2012 19:56

Justine - thank you for the clarificati

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 19:56

No Bogey MN does advertise McD in it's pop ups.

bogeyface · 03/05/2012 19:58

I cant argue that it isnt correct MrsH, but I can say that I havent seen a single McD advert on here since the day I started using it about 3 years ago.

LtEveDallas · 03/05/2012 19:58

Justine - thank you for the clarification. I was very Hmm at the wording the OP stated. Didn't think it would be true.

Please don't stop the adverts. I don't want to have to pay to CAT again [smile[

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 20:01

Lucky you Bogey it jumped up and down to the right of my screen when it was on a loop.I'll wager the Olympics will bring some more.Yes I really should get my act together and do the ad blocker thing but the problem with that is you don't see what you're endorsing iykwim.

littleandlargeshells · 03/05/2012 20:15

so your dh went for a mcshit

lol

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 20:18

except on specific sites blocker shuts out the ads that are selected fas relevant for you by googles searches you have done in the past days.

Blocking pop up's take a clicks on the web browser preferences or settings

bibbitybobbitybunny · 03/05/2012 20:19

What is this "Macdonalds" of which you speak? Must give them a whirl, after I have checked out their advertising on Mumsnet of course.

5madthings · 03/05/2012 20:19

i have an ad blocker but it allows places i have googled, so i still get the boden ads Grin

bogeyface · 03/05/2012 20:19

So you would rather see ads you dont want to see so that you can moan abotu them, rather than just block them or if you dont want to endorse anything, switching to another site?

Thats like watching porn so that you can be deliberately offended!

Either turn em off or go to another site ffs!

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 20:26

Well time to start making supper since Im not eating a McD's today.

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 20:33

LeQueen, no one is getting prissy about that. Precisely the opposite.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 03/05/2012 20:39

it's just very odd (imo) for a site like mn to advocate that mds was okay to advertise-same for any fast food outlet really

sends mixed messages and i know at least one mnetter who left over this, so whether some people think it's a bit prissy to care, some do care quite alot

PimpMyTunnel · 03/05/2012 20:40

Tatty why did you even come on here to say about the wifi?

MarianneM · 03/05/2012 20:40

"The Guardian. Is that paper still in business? Must be down to less than 200k readers now."

Novack - which newspaper do you read?

bogeyface · 03/05/2012 20:41

Its not about them eating it LeQ, its about McDs advertising, because after all we are all so stupid that the minute we see an advert we rush out and buy the product. If we see McD on here then there will be a whole generation of morbidly obese MN children and it will all be MN and McDs fault!

Dont you see that our children should be saved from our stupidity by banning the ads? Its the only way!

Hmm
MarianneM · 03/05/2012 20:44

because after all we are all so stupid that the minute we see an advert we rush out and buy the product

But it IS like that - are you really so naive that you can't see it? Do you really think that companies such as McDonald's would spend megabucks on advertising if it didn't work?

LineRunner · 03/05/2012 20:44

The Guardian is wonderful.
