Mumsnet and McDonalds

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

There have been studies which link poverty to obesity, there is no need for such aggression and utter rudeness.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 19:09

You have refused all day to proved any evidence of McD's being bad except your own opinion and you have clearly stated you do not want to be informed of the reality of how all their wholesome ingredients are produced. McD's did not create cinq estates or childhood obesity and certainly cannot be accused of all the curvy people in the UK.

sairygamp · 03/05/2012 19:09

dd aged 6 asked me 'what's macDonalds?' the other day. (only because dh hates them and refuse to go anywhere near them, whereas I would be in there every day if i could don't mind one occasionally..)

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 19:10

I simply said I have taught in deprived areas like Tatty where whole classes of kids have smiled up at me with black teeth and who think a cold Happy Meal is a packed lunch.

That isn't insulting anyone.

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 03/05/2012 19:10

I have middle class cousins and they are obese but yet my family are healthy although we are working class!

Class is a load of bollocks imo. Doesn't matter what class you are if you eat shit you eat shit!

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 19:11

Poverty and obesity is a first world problem. Believe me the poor of the world are not obese.

PimpMyTunnel · 03/05/2012 19:12

Yes mrs because people in poverty can afford mcdonalds all thw time and just get fat. A mcdonalds meal is like 4 or 5 quid. Do you think a lower class family could afford it enough to make their children fat.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 19:12

Mrs Heffley Can you tell me the name of that area and I will visit it in a weeks time when Im in the UK.

picnicbasketcase · 03/05/2012 19:13

Yes, too many Happy Meals would be bad for a child. You can tell from the key part of that sentence, 'too many'. There's no point in looking down your nose at anyone who ever lets their DC eat one though is there? One a month or less, for example, I would not class as 'too many'.

If children are eating nothing but McD's, obviously that's bad. They've tried to address healthy eating with fruit bags, water, carrot sticks etc, and all over the HM boxes is stuff about getting more exercise. The toys at the moment are things like pedometers, in association with the Olympics, again encouraging physical activity.

I don't know why some people are capable of banning their own children from eating it if they feel that strongly, but don't seem to be able to keep from judging others who see the occasional burger as part of a normal diet. I don't eat offal, I wouldn't feed my children it, but I still wouldn't get up on a soapbox and slag off other people for choosing to.

PimpMyTunnel · 03/05/2012 19:14

WHATS BLACK TEETH GOT TO DO WITH ANYTHING?

PimpMyTunnel · 03/05/2012 19:16

I think picnicbasket has pretty much summed it all up.

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 19:17

Novak you clearly haven't read about the rocketing obesity levels in China linked to the increase of Western fast food joints.

Pimp a Happy Meal is around £2.

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 19:17

Yes Mrs Heffley, I want to know where that area is too, the one where all the children have black teeth and live on junk food. Hmm.

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 03/05/2012 19:18

So now the increase in obesity in China is McDonald's fault?! Evil basterds

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 19:24

MrsHeffley you are writing nonsese now. Are you aware that in China the Ratio of McD's to population is the same as the UK having less than 50 restaurants.

The reason for more curvy people in china is improved diet with increasing wealth and a rampant economy.

They also will show how active they are at the olympics by being in the top few of the medal tables

Mrs Heffley please tell me the area and I promise I will visit it to see if you

PimpMyTunnel · 03/05/2012 19:25

So a happy meal is 2.49 an adult meal is just over 4 quid. To get obese you would have to eat it alot. Especially as children are more active so burn it off easily. My 3 year old dd is skinny but eats more than her 5 year old cousin. As you have stated children in povery are getting obese, due to fast food. So a single mum with 1 chikd will get 120 quid a week in benefits. After paying electric, gas, phone bill and clothes she will then be left with enough to buy no shoppi ng whatsoever and buy her child and herself mcdonalds for supper everyday. Yes?

The reason people tout things like its so bad in China or nestle are killing the babies propaganda is because they rely on the fact that the vast majority of people will never go to these places nor have been to and generally will accept nonsense as fact.

But lets not get facts in the way of a good OUTRAGE. :)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 19:26

wow, can you not see that what mrsheffley is saying is true? advertising DOES have an impact, mcdonalds IS junk.

she might draw different conclusions about what if anything should be done, but the defensiveness on here is a shocker.

btw i take my children to mcdonalds and i like it, and i feel perfectly able to say no to them etc etc but i would Hit The Roof if the school allowed them to advertise in the building. because it would send a message To Children From The School that it was decent grub. which it isn't, particularly. but i still take my kids there and like it myself.

PoohBearsHole · 03/05/2012 19:28

Basically if you don't make it yourself, and it sits on a shelf waiting to be purchased, its going to have a shed load of crap in. Some of it even tastes relatively nice Smile

The problem I have is that I was thinking about McD all day and took the dc's there for tea. So cracking advertising Grin

mcd and mn? Couldn't give a toss, if mcd want to throw money at a sight that I use then fab, I actually think most of the ads on mn are pretty naff and I barely pay attention but do appreciate them as they keep the sight running financially so..............whatever, good on mn take the evil peoples money an d put it to good use is what I say Grin

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 19:29

Novck is not the deranged on here.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 19:29

So I'm deranged for just retorting your argument with Fact. Cheers thanks for that.

You are the one who retort with insults when your nonsense made up facts are proving to be false then shortly after a post or two you claim someone has insulted you.

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 03/05/2012 19:29

novak yes you clearly are deranged! Grin

PoohBearsHole · 03/05/2012 19:30

Especially if the evil ones would give the money to a site that quite frankly has more mcd haters than lovers!

The question is "whose fooling who?" imo!

Good on mn.

Perhaps they should start taking money from nestle and give it back to those affected..............
