Mumsnet and McDonalds

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 08:13

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

I don't eat it,I have a problem with the advertising.I don't think there is any call for insults because of this.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 13:44

Because you are not informed at all about some local indie cafe who may or not be buying the cheapest processed crap that Breakie Brothers deliver or that they use carnation milk in their banoffee pie etc

But you'd rather eat their than a chain restaurant that allows you to go to the field see the cow see the factory yadda yadda. You'd rather stay uninformed.

Maybe that caramelised onion in the indies sandwich tastes so good because they used cheap white REFINED sugar to caramelise it adding calories.

You have noooooo idea what I choose at said indie cafe or M&S or anywhere else for that matter, caramalised onions PMSL.

You're arguing that because Mcds are shit, everywhere else is too, they're not.

LineRunner · 03/05/2012 13:47

Here you go, McLibel

bintofbohemia · 03/05/2012 13:47

Oh sod it, if you all want to eat weird stuff that doesn't decay knock yourselves out. Doesn't strike me as much of a "treat" though... Grin

ilovemydogandMrObama · 03/05/2012 13:49

we just got back from an 'indie' cafe. what bollocks. despite ordering a 'children's meal' it came with garnish and was too spicy. Fab. had to stop for fish and chips on the way back. Grin

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 13:50

I have never said McD's is shit. I have said it is quite the contrary. It does decay very quickly actually which is why they control the shelf life in the restaurants so tightly and have bi weekly or even more often deliveries.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 13:51

This is a good thread as we can dispel all the bigoted nonsense that seems to be spread by certain corners of society.

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 13:51

Novak soooo works for McD.

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 13:52

So we're going to add bigot to the insults now, because I don't like junk food advertising.Hmm

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 13:57

Another straw man reply.

I said biggoted nonsense. you are using the insults like shit etc. I am being a zealot in response.

And again you are using the pejorative of 'Junk' to be passive aggressive with your reply.

mamij · 03/05/2012 14:01

You hate McDs so much... But not enough not to use their facilities. Hmmm

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 14:03

Whatever Novak.I'm not going to hang around to be insulted and have valid points permanently ignored. I've said what I think.

You carry on believing a Happy Meal is manna from heaven I'll carry on looking forward to the day when junk food advertising is restricted.

bintofbohemia · 03/05/2012 14:04

(Do they not have bi weekly deliveries because people can't shovel the crap in fast enough?) Grin

Seriously Novack: "And again you are using the pejorative of 'Junk' to be passive aggressive with your reply"

Leaving the passive aggressive thing aside because really? are you objecting to McDonald's being called junk food?

squeakytoy · 03/05/2012 14:05

Why should advertising be banned. If you are gullible enough to go running for a burger when you see those golden arches, more fool you. Clearly you are not, so why should the advertising bother you?

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 14:06

You'll have a long long wait for that one. Take responsibility for your own children and switch off the TV if you don't like it. Or pay a higher license fee to get adverts off all commercial channels.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 14:09

bintofbohemia Yes it the context it was being used as pejorative word for a highly successful chain restaurant.

KatieMiddleton · 03/05/2012 14:10

Ok I've seen it all now: es it the context it was being used as pejorative word for a highly successful chain restaurant.

LMAO Grin

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 03/05/2012 14:12

Don't see why people seem to be heated about this. McDonald's is junk food/fast food

People have their own opinions on it. My opinion is I like to eat there now and again with my son.

Each to their own. If you don't like it don't go

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 14:12

I thought that would go down well. :)

MeKathryn · 03/05/2012 14:22

Got nothing against fast food in moderation, though the PR clout of McDonald's probably doesn't help with healthy eating.

I was always against them because of cutting down the rainforest to grow soya to feed cows and because of dodgy big business practices. No idea if they are still as bad though, I'm a veggie so won't be darkening their doors Wink

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 03/05/2012 14:23

I've worked in 3 different Maccy D's (they were a very good employer for a skint student - the free food meant I didn't have to cook dinner on the nights I was working - plus it was probably healthier that what I would have cooked).

I have never seen oil added to the burgers when being cooked, it wasn't part of their procedures (which tend to be set in stone). It was a long time ago though so things may have changed since I was there.

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 03/05/2012 14:26

Novack you're right about the shelf life, if you look at the place where the burgers are kept, you will see metal dividers with numbers on them.

When the burgers go out of date (time) per those numbers, they are binned.

They won't give them to the homeless even because of the risk of food poisoning.

I don't work there any more so don't have a vested interest in praising them, however I do like their food for an occasional weekly treat.

TheGreatScootini · 03/05/2012 14:33

My DH does work for McDonalds-Ill admit that up front. They arent the devil,They do quite alot of good work on the quiet, but conversely, principally they are obviously in it to make money-they are a business afterall.I would say that becuase they are so heavily scrutinised and criticized their standards are actually fairly high in most areas-they are actually quite transparent regarding their practice, food standards etc etc,
With re objections to advertising I would say still, however much your DC's are advertised to, its the parent who has to physically take them in there and order them their dinner surely?
When our DD's see an advert for some toy or whatever they may start to pester for it.And I may say yes, or I may say no.But its me doing the choosing, and actual purchasing not them, so I can exercise control in the same way that I can choose to take them to McD's or not.
