Football culture is far more harmful to women's rights and wellbeing than porn culture.

For a start, football culture gives a far more pervasive, wide-ranging and monolithic message: men are gods and women are either decorative accessories or foodstuff. It's misogyny and toxic masculinity encapsulated. Never mind the fact that the England women's football team have apparently won the world cup more often than the England men's team: there's the whole WAG thing, where being someone's appendage is a prize girls are told to covet, yet if they actually try to seek this prize they are demonized as sluts and gold-diggers, there's the way in which rape is seen as far more forgivable than being gay... and hard evidence that violence against women has a big upsurge every time there's a major football match on.

YABU. There is an extremely negative and nasty side to football, of course there is. But that's a veneer that our culture has managed to apply over something that is essentially just a team game. Football in itself doesn't make women want to be WAGs.

Olympia2012 · 29/04/2012 23:07

Where is op?

solidgoldbrass · 29/04/2012 23:08

Right here, Olympia, watching...

OP posts:
Jazzicatz · 29/04/2012 23:09

I am not sure they are mutually exclusive OP

GrahamTribe · 29/04/2012 23:10

This sounds like something you're quoting, rather than your own words, SolidGoldBrass. Am I right? Apologies if I'm not of course.
(It's still bollocks, either way). Grin

Olympia2012 · 29/04/2012 23:11

Watching what?

solidgoldbrass · 29/04/2012 23:12

Graham: Wrong. Maybe you think that because when I'm not on here I'm a Proper Writer

OP posts:
TalHotBlond · 29/04/2012 23:12

Completely agree.

Shenanagins · 29/04/2012 23:13

You seem to be tarnishing all to do with football due to the antics of a few and focusing at the top end of the game.

You seem to have completely overlooked a whole other side to it - the side that promotes physical activity in people of all ages, the side that promotes teamwork, discipline, training.

The news is full of stories of the rising obesity rate where here is an activity that in comparison to other sports is cheap to participate in it helps keep kids off the street.

so on that basis yabu.

Aboutlastnight · 29/04/2012 23:14

Obv many, many women are trafficked or forced into non consensual football due to their economic circumstances. it's terrible.

GrahamTribe · 29/04/2012 23:15

"Graham: Wrong"

Not for the first time. Or the last. Grin Sorry Solid. Did I tell you that I still think it's bollocks though?

BackforGood · 29/04/2012 23:18

Yawn.
I've hidden the feminism topic so I don't have to cast my eye over such tosh.
YABU to suggest such rubbish.
YABVU to post your confused thinking in AIBU so anyone might stumble across it.

squeakytoy · 29/04/2012 23:20

Awww its been quite a while since we had the sunday night feminist invasion/baiting

BlueFergie · 29/04/2012 23:23

You know I get the point you are making particularly about the WAG culture. It's abhorrent how women are encouraged to view 'snaring' a footballer as an ambition or career choice.
It is definitely a misogynistic culture but worse than porn? I mean the main point of football is the game. Porn is actually built on the degradation and exploitation of women.
So to me porn is worse.

BasilFoulEggs · 29/04/2012 23:24

I think football culture feeds into porn culture, but worse?

Dunno.

Will watch thread and see what arguments people put forward and which I agree with.

Smile
BasilFoulEggs · 29/04/2012 23:25

Or is it porn culture feeding into football culture?

Oh I don't know it's late and I'm off to bed.

Grin
jaquelinehyde · 29/04/2012 23:30

Balls...

I don't care whether they are hairy or of the sports variety...

Just Balls!

oikopolis · 29/04/2012 23:30

maybe this is the case in England, or Europe possibly. i lived in the UK and never personally came into contact with football culture so i can't really comment. it's certainly not the case in other areas i've lived.

imo porn use is way more widespread (internationally, and also among British men - i.e. i think there are more massive porn fans than massive footie fans in the UK) and therefore more damaging in terms of reach and how it affects everyday interactions.

maybe individual extreme footie fans are more misogynistic than individual extreme porn users - don't know enough footie fans to have an opinion on that tbh.

BasilFoulEggs · 29/04/2012 23:34

Before I go off to bed - isn't "football culture" part of "celebrity culture"?

BlueFergie · 29/04/2012 23:34

Was just thinking that basil. I am sure there is a huge cross over between men who follow football and men who use porn. So does football create misogynists or are misogynists attracted to football?
Also I think there is a risk in judging the whole footballing community based on the antics of players and fans at the professional level. Lots of local football clubs play a very important role in their community.
Porn on the other hand? Not so much

WorraLiberty · 29/04/2012 23:38

Awww its been quite a while since we had the sunday night feminist invasion/baiting

Not long enough in my opinion.

Right here, Olympia, watching...

Why don't you climb out of your own arse and actually talk about your inflammatory OP then?

I normally couldn't give a shit where anyone posts but I think this would be better suited to Feminsim....being as though it's clearly not an AIBU subject.

squeakytoy · 29/04/2012 23:41

and hard evidence that violence against women has a big upsurge every time there's a major football match on

that has nothing to do with porn, and everything to do with alcohol..

pubs show football games.. pubs serve beer...

I would say there is a far greater link between a binge drinking culture and football than there is to football and porn.

The majority of "celebrity" footballers are not renowned for their IQ, and neither are the majority of "models".. so they do make a fairly good pairing..

thekidsrule · 29/04/2012 23:43

couldnt you say that op about many male orientated sport

eg,boxing,racing

on the whole i think sport has many pluses more than minuses

or am i missing the whole point

iceandsliceplease · 29/04/2012 23:51

Daily mail link, apologies, but I think it's a good article, and I'm surprised that the DM published it www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2134622/Ched-Evans-Only-football-rapist-round-applause--Martin-Samuel.html

Might provide a more readable start to a discussion than the OP Wink

iceandsliceplease · 29/04/2012 23:55

And as a football fan of the mighty mighty Norwich City, I have to say I've never experienced any problems at Carrow Road, regardless of whether I'm in the Barclay, the snakepit, or the boxes.
