yada yada yada. I've seen the debates on here on fresh over frozen. I get that. But who the rubbery-fuck buys tinned veg??

Was strolling around the Co-Op today and clocked a a shelf of tinned peas/carrots/potatos.

Who the fuck would eat tinned peas?? The colour is so very wrong. I can't begin to imagine what the texture is like

Sweetcorn
Pulses
Tomatoes
Creamed corn for soups
Tinned fruit for adding to yogurt

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 29/04/2012 11:44

Some tinned veg we use quite regularly, stuff like tomatoes, pulses, mushy peas, I love tinned mushy peas - think I might have some for lunch with chips actually.

Others, I buy when I go camping. One of my favourite camping foods is tinned Irish stew with a load of tinned potatoes, carrots and peas chucked in to bulk it out. I don't find them as nice as fresh, but they're edible and when you're in a tent with limited work space they're more convenient then fresh veg. Plus fresh veg would probably spoil quickly in a sweltering hot tent.

PeahenTailFeathers · 29/04/2012 11:52

Yabu. Cold, cheap, tinned mushy peas spread on buttered crackers with a little salt is the food of the gods Grin .

TotemPole · 29/04/2012 12:03

Eggrules & GateGipsy, thanks. I'm going to get some a try a few of these suggestions.

ttalloo · 29/04/2012 12:13

I buy tinned sweetcorn, tomatoes and mushy peas. And tinned pineapple.

But I'll never forget my surprise when, aged 18, I visited my boyfriend in the North-East and discovered that his mother's larder contained tinned potatoes, carrots and peas, and dried onions. She never bought fresh vegetables in case they spoiled.

titfortat · 29/04/2012 12:36

Only tinned stuff in my cupboard is tomatoes, tuna, sweetcorn, soup and beans. Garden peas have to be frozen. Carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, fruit etc etc have to be fresh.

They don't seem appealing to me. Although some ideas on this thread do, so I may end up eating my own words after trying them out.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 29/04/2012 12:38

Darn this thread...I might have to ha e a Frey bentos pie, tinned pots, processed peas and bisto gravy for tea now...or maybe not..

happybubblebrain · 29/04/2012 12:40

I buy tinned tomatoes, sweetcorn, mushy peas, lentils and beans. We eat all these.

Every couple of years I buy some tins of marrowfat peas, pineapple and peaches, then a couple of years later I throw them in the bin because they're out of date. I'm not sure why I do this.

Pinkie29 · 29/04/2012 12:56

hauntlittlelunatuc don't forget the tinned pineapples and condensed milk for dessert!

eggrules I have a vague memory now of this bacon grill, like a tin of corned beef? I've no idea what marrowfat peas are?

HauntedLittleLunatic · 29/04/2012 12:59

Nah...would be tinned syrup pudding and tinned custard...I would make a pineapplle upside down cake with the tinned pineapple tho...

AfricanExport · 29/04/2012 13:46

Selky : Where do you get the Creamed Corn? Grew up on that but only find it in the Asian markets here... Thanks

thanks

TheFallenMadonna · 29/04/2012 13:51

I prefer tinned sweetcorn to frozen or 'fresh' from the shop. Straight off the allotment best of all though.

squeakytoy · 29/04/2012 13:53

You can get creamed sweetcorn in all the major supermarkets, green giant do it.

fuzzpig · 29/04/2012 14:40

I'm really intrigued by the creamed corn thing. Is it literally just blitzed corn or is there other stuff in it? I've considered making it myself having heard it referred to on American telly.

What does one actually do with it though? Is it like a side dish or something?

Zara1984 · 29/04/2012 19:52

After reading this thread I happened to sea tinned steak pie for the first time at Tesco today!! WTF is up with that!? And how do you heat it up? Boil the whole tin?

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 29/04/2012 20:33

squeaky - I'm down in the SE, I haven't been able to get any?? I figured it wasn't available in the UK. I miss it (from living overseas!). Where abouts in the country are you? I've tried blitzing the corn with the hand blender, but it's not the same! It's like Walkers Crisps - love the Pickled Onion, you cannot get them down south! When I go ooop north I'm a Picked Onion Piggy :)

FashionEaster · 29/04/2012 20:56

Agree with Squeaky about the best mushy peas being Lockwoods frozen from Sainsbury's. But ignore the cooking instructions, add salt and then heat them very slowly over a low heat, part covered with a pan lid, for about 30-40mins otherwise they will go as hard as bullets.

oikopolis · 29/04/2012 20:56

YABU. i buy tinned black beans and chickpeas because i cba to soak/rinse the dried ones.

tinned sweetcorn is useful for adding to casseroles/chilis etc.

i confess i can't quite manage tinned peas though. but some people grew up on all sorts of tinned stuff so they like the taste of it, horses for courses etc.

fuzzpig · 29/04/2012 21:10

Wait, so there's a regional variation in Walkers flavour availability?!

MN has truly been an education today.

icapturethecastle · 29/04/2012 21:39

My MIL does she sometimes brings them around here when I am working late and makes tea for DH (that is whole other thread).

PavlovtheCat · 29/04/2012 21:48

haha I saw the bacon breakfast thing in sainsburys when I was shopping, would never have noticed it before reading this thread!

PavlovtheCat · 29/04/2012 21:57

Surely tinned spinach is very good for you with lots of nutrients? Confused

I mean, look at Popeye. He always eats it from a can and he is well muscly.
