yada yada yada. I've seen the debates on here on fresh over frozen. I get that. But who the rubbery-fuck buys tinned veg??

Was strolling around the Co-Op today and clocked a a shelf of tinned peas/carrots/potatos.

Who the fuck would eat tinned peas?? The colour is so very wrong. I can't begin to imagine what the texture is like

This is a revelation. I didn't know these things existed

I only shop online. I've not set foot in a supermarket for 5 years

It is possible I'm missing out

As for the tinned steak pie...

You take the lid off with a can opener and pop in oven. On the top is some really stodgy wet looking pastry. After however long it has taken to cook the pastry has risen about 3" and is lovely golden and flakey. Underneath it is kind of like a sheet of cooked lasagne tho in texture and actually rather tasty.

after coming in soaking wet yesterday, i must say i really ^craved a Fray Bentos pie... reminded me s much of camping..

HauntedLittleLunatic · 30/04/2012 10:10

How on earth did you cook a fray bentos pie camping?

Mummy2FE · 30/04/2012 11:38

Only Green Giant sweetcorn.

Pinkie29 · 30/04/2012 11:53

I've put fray bentos on my shopping list I need to try it!

seeker · 30/04/2012 11:56

My dsadores Fray Bentos pies! Sometimes when he has a friend round they have one each. Out of the tin. With chips.

I ought to make them one of those Birds Eye packet trifles for pudding, shouldn't I? I will next time.

takeonboard · 30/04/2012 12:02

I was brought up on tinned veg....vom, but never eat them now.
I know they are still sold in the shops but not many younger people eat tinned food now do they?
Actually, I do -I occasionally use tinned tomatos in spag bol !

KatieScarlett2833 · 30/04/2012 12:03

Tinned sweetorn is a staple here.

We do have fresh sometimes but TBH it's a bit of a faff.

CallMeAl · 30/04/2012 12:04

food snobbery is so declasse.

melika · 30/04/2012 12:04

What about camping, always useful then.

CoffeeInTheMorning · 30/04/2012 12:04

Tinned "breakfast in a can" - what my kids take to festivals and eat cold.

GinPalace · 30/04/2012 12:05

Pavlov Grin 'well muscly' - hehehehehehe.

KatieScarlett2833 · 30/04/2012 12:06

Do Baked Beans count in the bad books?

I love them, so ner

GinPalace · 30/04/2012 12:11

palm hearts, bamboo shoots, tomatoes, and sweetcorn are a yes.

I used to have an 'emergency fray bentos' in the cupboard. Never needed it in an emergency though. They have a shelf life of about 2 years so I would eat my Fray Bentos bi-annually before it went past its date, it was like a ritual. Then buy the new emergency pie - to be eaten 2 years later. Grin

melika · 30/04/2012 13:11

In my cupboard:-

Beans
Toms
Kidney beans
Sweetcorn
Peas
Peach slices
Grapefruit
Soups
Ravioli
Spaghetti
Frut Cocktail

all for emergency, you understand!Wink

missmalteser · 30/04/2012 16:54

Is thread has only served to make me want to try tinned good

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 30/04/2012 17:16

I always thought that this stuff was an internet joke, but apparently it is now for real:

Mrsrobertduvall · 30/04/2012 17:25

When my dad died, we found 47 Fray Bentos pies in the sideboard.
He always bought them when on offer.

We donated them to the local shelter..

I am fond memories of tinned new potatoes, fray bentos and tinned carrots as a child.

tethersend · 30/04/2012 17:28

Brace yourself, UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername...

Whole chicken in a can

neepsandtatties · 30/04/2012 17:30

Really pleased to see up thread some fellow Glenryck Pilchards in Tomato Sauce lovers. I thought I was the only one keeping the brand afloat!

I'm also rather partial to tinned Irish Stew...

pepperrabbit · 30/04/2012 17:34

I saw frozen omelettes in the supermarket the other day. Shock Confused
I was so shocked I could hear myself talking to myself about them....
I mean - even I - who mainly uses the oven timer to keep track of the developing time for my hair dye - can make an omelette.....

suburbandream · 30/04/2012 17:36

Frozen omlettes is a new one on me, but we once had frozen, microwaveable pancakes when we went to my elderly Dad's on Pancake Day. The DCs couldn't believe their eyes!!

The idea of eating tinned marrow fat peas, carrots, or peas makes me want to vomit and I'm a very unfussy eater!

Tinned veg I buy - tomatoes, sweetcorn, ratatouille, chip shop style mushy peas.

If camping then we have also been known to make 'camping stew'.
