yada yada yada. I've seen the debates on here on fresh over frozen. I get that. But who the rubbery-fuck buys tinned veg??

Was strolling around the Co-Op today and clocked a a shelf of tinned peas/carrots/potatos.

Who the fuck would eat tinned peas?? The colour is so very wrong. I can't begin to imagine what the texture is like

Sinister - what's wrong with frozen sweetcorn? I buy the husks and the loose kernals, both are great. I'd prefer fresh 'on the husk' but they aren't always available and can be ££

Haricot vert - bleurgh. Fresh, frozen, tinned or dipped in chocolate.

Boredandrestless - there's not a mile of difference between tinned mushy & marrowfat peas :)

NEWSFLASH

Just to prove how reasonable I am Grin

I have just been to the Co-Op and bought two tins of new potatos. I have dusted off the deep fat fryer and I am going to saute those bad boys for supper tonight.

Will report back later

saute is shallow frying, you know that right? Grin

lynsey1978 · 30/04/2012 19:03

Tinned sweet corn and mushy peas, the rest is fresh

MadameChinLegs · 30/04/2012 19:05

I buy tinned tomatoes, mushy peas and sweetcorn. Oh and baked beans.

Jins · 30/04/2012 19:07

On the strength of this thread I bought a tin of new potatoes and fried them in olive oil and butter as mentioned upthread.

Huge mistake. Nobody liked them. I've used them in curries before and they were ok (just) but they won't be going on my shopping list again.

Processed peas though - just as good as I remembered :)

seeker · 30/04/2012 19:12

Can someone convince me about tinned spinach before I go shopping tomorrow? I love spinach!

springaroundthecorner · 30/04/2012 19:14

Due to not having any money as a result of acrimonious separation I've tried to be less wasteful with food and buy economically ie. avoid Waitrose.

Ive been buying tinnned carrots and peas from Lidl -39p, and chucking them in things like a leftovers curry. They are great for that, so much nicer than the frozen version and a helluva sight less time consuming that chopping up fresh carrots and then waiting for them to soften. I'm a convert now even if I won the Lottery.

Sorry, must be my working class Northern roots. Although to be fair have never seen tinned veg in my Mum's cupboards.

Lovecat · 30/04/2012 19:19

Marrowfat peas.... mmmmm....:o

I grew up eating nothing but tinned veg. Peas and carrots and sometimes potatoes. Mum had no interest in cooking and although would often start from scratch she would then get distracted in a book (God help us all if MN had existed back then, we'd have never got fed!) and the pans would boil dry. With tinned veg, she could stick them on 2 mins before dishing up and we only occasionally had to eat blackened carrots thereafter. I didn't know other veg existed til I left home [amazed she hasn't got rickets emoticon]

BertieBotts · 30/04/2012 19:32

Tinned potatoes are vile. Like little cakes of slimy soap.

catinboots · 30/04/2012 19:33

Oh not sautéing then Blush

I'm deep fat frying the fuckers Grin

tethersend I felt sorry for that chicken in a can!!

ivanapoo · 30/04/2012 19:48

M&S vegetable curry in a can is THE FOOD OF THE GODS. I'm not lying. Quickest, easiest, not as unhealthy as a takeawayest meal ever.

Pulses, tomatoes, fruit in cans are all good.

Sweetcorn in a can with juice is pretty hideous. The dry-can type is just about bearable.

Don't eat meat but when I did and worked in a vair nice restaurant we (the staff) used to "treat" ourselves to Fray Bentos pies occasionally for our pre-service meal.

parno · 30/04/2012 21:19

I've never read such a load of snotty, middle class tripe for at least a week on MN. FFS

Btw not a great idea to deep dry tinned pots due to high water content. My eye brows have only just grown back.

Nevertooearlyforcake · 30/04/2012 21:26

Tinned potatoes have a lovely waxed consistency. They taste weird but I have been known to buy them as a special treat.

Oops.

stressheaderic · 30/04/2012 21:29

Aldi do a big tin of baby carrots for 39p. Sweet and juicy. 2yo DD and I love them.
Bite me.

catinboots · 30/04/2012 22:02

DH and DS1 loved them!!!

Campers. That's who.

And also available in tins are:

hot dogs
vegetable chilli
M&S curry
corned beef

Hurrah for tins!

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 30/04/2012 22:09

Tinned new potatoes are great when sliced and fried in butter with salt and ground pepper as part of a lardy breakfast.

They don't have the starchy taste that non-tinned spuds do.

suburbandream · 01/05/2012 10:20

My Dad is probably single-handedly responsible for the continued success of the tinned veg/fruit/meat/anything industry Smile. He goes sailing a lot and all his old cronies seem to exist on tinned mince and tinned potatoes etc, not forgetting fray bentos pies and spam of course.

squeakytoy · 01/05/2012 10:28

A vital thing with tinned potatoes is to rinse them properly or they will be slimy.

ithasgonetotheopera · 01/05/2012 10:39

I don't get it, frozen peas/sweetcorn tastes so much better than the tinned stuff and not much longer to prepare. Only good thing in tins are tomatoes, coconut milk and small fish (soups and Heinz beans are alright).

I HATE tinned mushrooms/carrots thrown into a stew or whatever, so slimy - my MIL loves her tins. Not massively keen on frozen veg but it is a step up, and actively good if you're making a blended soup like Broccoli and stilton. Frozen spinach is good for curries/soups etc.

Also, at least frozen veg retains all the nutrients that fresh does, tinned loses it.

When I camp I take a steak, a frying pan, couscous and some herbs.

TotemPole · 01/05/2012 11:07

I've bought frozen omelettes, eaten them and bought them again. They're ok, a bit bland on the non cheesey parts.

Frozen omelette + box of micro chips + ketchup = quick lunch and no frying pan or mixing bowl to wash up. Grin

I've also bought frozen cheeseburgers in buns.
