To keep my son home from school trips

My son is in reception and so far they have had 2 school trips with a 3rd coming up soon. Each one has been a 100 mile round trip on a coach on the motorway. I have asked each time if I can go along as a helper and have been turned down each time. I gave my son a choice of going on the trips and he said he didn't want to go. I know I could have easily pursuaded him but chose not to as I didn't think the trips were a good idea myself. The third one is coming up and I'm being pressured by his teacher to send him. Am I being unreasonable to keep him home?

I've just had a look at the school tours on offer at Manchester airport. I want to go. You get to explore a plane and go in the cockpit and sit in the captain's seat (aspie brain goes into overdrive at the thought of all those lovely buttons). And ... they've got Concorde stashed in a hangar. You get to play with Concorde :o

I do feel anxious when my dd goes on long distance school trips. I have visions of a beer swilling, burger eating coach driver. I do accept it is due to my over protectiveness so let her go. However, if the forecast was for really difficult driving conditions, I may not allow her to go, if the school were still insisting. I def think my anxiety is due to stories in the press.

scottishmummy · 27/04/2012 09:41

why do you let alarmist press stories hold such sway?
regular and nice doesnt make good copy
alarmist and push the buttons does

life is positive risk taking, and cant have a life restricted based on what ifs

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2012 09:44

scottishmummy I am agreeing with you. Shock

zombiegames · 27/04/2012 09:45

And me.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/04/2012 09:48

Kladdkaka shall we organise a mumsnet school trip to Manchester Airport - I'm sure they won't notice we're a bit old - it sounds like great fun Grin

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2012 09:49

OOh can I come Chazs?

Kladdkaka · 27/04/2012 09:50

Yes please.

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2012 09:51

Pag from memory quite a few people said it.

Visual learning and experiencing what they've been taught all term in the confines of a classroom, are excellent teaching aids.

You can show a child a Pantomime/Airport on DVD and I'm sure they'll love it

But take them there to actually experience the atmosphere and have a good look around, and the learning immediately comes alive and is more fun and memorable.

bruffin · 27/04/2012 09:54

tut tut - what about your seat belt

I need to sit at the front as a i get travel sick!

Roseformeplease · 27/04/2012 09:54

50 miles on the motorway is only an hour and school trips are also about all the fun that can be had on the coach. YABU and he will be anxious about you when he does go on a trip as he may be deciding not to go to please you.

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2012 09:55

I didn't even know there were school trips to the airport. My two seem to have missed out. Sad

Kladdkaka · 27/04/2012 09:55

You can have the backseat. I want the front one. I like to get there first. :o

zombiegames · 27/04/2012 09:56

bruffin - Seatbelt? I am so short that I probably really should have a booster seat!

Kladdkaka · 27/04/2012 09:56

eurgh, don't want the front seat anymore if Bruffin is going to be puking next me.

WorraLiberty · 27/04/2012 09:57

Oh can I come to the Airport?

I won't be any trouble

I'm only interested in the duty free Grin

zombiegames · 27/04/2012 09:58

Sparklingbrook - March up to the school NOW with with your arms folded over your bosom, demand to speak to the head and demand to know why your children didn't visit an airport. Don't your teachers care about the kids in their care!!!!!

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2012 09:59

Grin I may write to the local paper.

zombiegames · 27/04/2012 09:59

Worra - Bet you will be trouble in the way back though? after consumption of duty free

Kladdkaka · 27/04/2012 10:01

I remember going on a school trip to the sewage works. It was one of the most enjoyable ones I went on.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/04/2012 10:01

I want to sit at the back and eat my packed lunch by 9.03am.

There will be bag checks on the way back.

Anyone without DutyFree will be sent back to get some.

Kladdkaka · 27/04/2012 10:02

I'm having banana sandwiches and mini cheddars in my packed lunch. And some umbongo.

zombiegames · 27/04/2012 10:03

We went on a school trip to the police station. Everyone talked about it for months afterwards - it was seriously great and very exciting.
