I have a friend who wont date black men, not because they are black but because she does not find black men attractive, in the same way she wont date a man who has blond hair and blue eyes.

I cant work out if she is racist or it is simply her preference in men, she has many friends who are the above, but still I'm Hmm so is she racist or not Confused

OP posts:

I just Googled him and nope! Grin

MagsAloof · 17/04/2012 18:52

HokeyCokeyPigInaPokey · 17/04/2012 19:01

Idris is very lovely but i saw him on Jonathan Ross once and he came across like a total idiot.....i still would though Grin

MagsAloof · 17/04/2012 19:33

No, no, no la la la la I cant hear you Hokey [grin

he is Stringer Bell in my dreams. And his mate, McNulty sometimes comes along, too Wink

MagsAloof · 17/04/2012 19:33

over ears

BupcakesandCunting · 17/04/2012 20:28

"What are you supposed to do? Sleep with someone you find physically unattractive, so that you can be an equal opportunities shagger?"

Grin

Oh yeah Elba. Forgot about him. I'd hop on.

lalaland3008 · 17/04/2012 20:29

Of course it's not racist it's just preference.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 18/04/2012 09:42

I don't fancy Idris. Should I check my pulse?

bejeezus · 18/04/2012 09:48

i dont think OP was ridiculous in asking the question at all

I totally get the preference for different physical characteristics thing, but it doesnt sit right with me either. Cant quite articulate why as yet...but its been bugging me since I read the thread yesterday

IME 'having a black friend' does not mean that a person is automatically not racist. Even having black/mixed race relatives/ partners and even children is not evidence that a person is not racist. There are plenty of individuals who have experienced racism from family members, even parents

porcamiseria · 18/04/2012 10:30

Ok , so now everyone is discussing whther they'd fxxk idris. Oh dear.

I still think this thread is offensive

imagine if a man posted "my mate does not fancy asian women. he is also does not fancy blondes. Is he racist to not fancy asian women"

then a load of men piled in "OH Lucy Lui, Id do her"
Shilpa Shetty, oh yes please

I BET people would find it less funny

derangedwithtiredness · 18/04/2012 10:44

exoticising and dehumanising

WhiteShores · 18/04/2012 10:44

porcamiseria
You haven't really given any reasons why having a personal sexual preference based on physical characteristics (including skin colour) is offensive.

porcamiseria · 18/04/2012 10:47

I have, earlier up-a-thread

I think black men have enough on their plate with having a load of middle class women discussing whether their preference to fuck them (nor not!)
is racist, or not

WhiteShores · 18/04/2012 10:51

I think black men are just as capable as any other man of realising they will regularly be physically judged by the opposite sex (just as women are weighed up physically by men).

WhiteShores · 18/04/2012 10:56

Also, there is a huge difference between simply not liking a thread, or personally finding it tasteless, and calling it racist (which is a serious charge, and offensive in itself when untrue, as well as disrespectful to the actual act of racism).

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 18/04/2012 10:58

'black men have enough on their plate'. That sounds a little patronising to me.

And I don't think a thread about someone who fancies or doesn't fancy Asian women, and went off at a tangent about Lucy Liu, would be particularly offensive either.

I haven't read all this thread though so may be wrong, or at least behind the curve. Sorry if so.

bejeezus · 18/04/2012 11:04

yep...all men are weighed up physically...on physical attributes

black men are weighed up on physical atributes AND on the colour of their skin

I dont know any black man who would give a flying fuck if some supercillious woman discounted them based on the fact that they were black. But Im not sure they would agree she wasnt racist

being black in a predominantly white country, isnt just about skin colour is it---thats the difference I think

bejeezus · 18/04/2012 11:05

Its like the arguements about whether racist bullying in kids should be treated differently to other kinds of bullying

some kids get picked on for being fat, for being ginger, for being smelly...etc

It is different because of history

WhiteShores · 18/04/2012 11:07

White men are weighed up on the colour of their skin also - this thread is full of women who have a sexual preference for black skin over white (including myself).

Believing that skin colour is more than just another physical characteristic is the very root of racism.

Nancy66 · 18/04/2012 11:09

I don't think the comments are offensive.

There are plenty of threads on MN about fanciable men - mostly they're white.

Why, when it becomes about a black man, is it unacceptable?

bejeezus · 18/04/2012 11:11

Believing that skin colour is more than just another physical characteristic is the very root of racism

yes...originally

NOW....do you know any black people whos skin colour hasnt affected their lives?

bejeezus · 18/04/2012 11:12

and I am not victimising here...I dont mean ruined their lives/ held them back etc.....

WhiteShores · 18/04/2012 11:13

bejeezus

Yes, it has affected their lives because of all the people that believe/believed skin colour is different from any other physical characteristic.

bejeezus · 18/04/2012 11:15

there are loads of reasons why it is perfectally acceptable to not fancy someone, just because they are black. It is just a skin colour after all, white people are treated just the same, its the same as being blond, ginger, tall, fat blah blah blah

Thats always been the problem with covert racism though hasnt it. You can excuse it/ fob it off....the other person is always being 'too sensitive' 'has a chip on their shoulder'

bejeezus · 18/04/2012 11:16

Yes, it has affected their lives because of all the people that believe/believed skin colour is different from any other physical characteristic

and pretending that it doesnt happen/ those people dont exist, wont make it go away. Those people will ALWAYS exist
