outside the registry office on the day of the wedding and if so what should we offer them as an incentive to be a witness? Not planning on having any guests.

Dh and I did this once. Folk came to stay in our holiday cottage on the Saturday, asked if we were free Tues lunchtime - we went to the local registry with them. We stuck a bottle of some nice fizzy wine into the cottage for them afterwards. It was lovely.

I think risky to rely on witnesses off the street better to arrange in advance. Old work colleague who doesn't know your other friends or family?

My friend did this and I don't think they had any problem finding people.

My father and step mother did this. They had no problem. They just turned up half an hour early and asked people passing by in the street. They ended up with a 19 year old student and a gentleman in his mid 80s who regaled them with stories of his wedding :). They were the first two people they asked

The next day my dad decided to tell me he was now married Hmm
