outside the registry office on the day of the wedding and if so what should we offer them as an incentive to be a witness? Not planning on having any guests.

I can do the Suffolk area xx

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 11/04/2012 19:52

I can cover the north east of Scotland. Grin
In fact I would happily cover most of Scotland tbh.
Whatever your reasons are I think it's something most people would be happy to do.

jenfraggle · 11/04/2012 19:53

Who'd have thought that Mid Cornwall would be such a hot bed of MN activity :o

deepfriedcupcake · 11/04/2012 19:55

Can second Sheffield if needed. Congratulations by the way.

OlaRapaceFru · 11/04/2012 19:55

We don't need a party, just the opportunity to wear a nice 'frock' and shoes (hat optional - although not for me) and it would be so exciting to do something so unusual.
Did I tell you I'm in London? Grin

MariaCallous · 11/04/2012 20:04

Northern Ireland covered here w a flower girl thrown in.

cocoachannel · 11/04/2012 20:06

What a fantastic thread Robino; your family is gorgeous!

I wonder whether as you say your vows OP, your practical reasons for marriage melt away (spot the old romantic)!

TwllBach · 11/04/2012 20:09

I can do north Wales Grin go ooooon. How lovely! And I definitely don't care f there's no dress etc because mine will be exactly the same, OP. DP is even considering only having half a day off work!

Also - what sort of tax break is it, exactly?

MissTapestry · 11/04/2012 20:17

Ooh, I can do Suffolk Grin

plantowed · 11/04/2012 20:29

Twllbach - my DP has already booked only half a day off work but we may have time for a quick early lunch before he is back in the office!

Re the tax - I have a degenerative illness that came on after having DC that seriously impairs my mobility and health. I gave up a very well paid career to have the DC and expected to be able to return at some stage. I am unlikely to ever be able to work again but I dont claim anything or receive an ill health pension and have to employ lots of help in the house and with the children to manage. Not sure if there are any tax breaks for most people.

By being married we can legitimately make use of my personal tax free allowance of about £9k as profit from our BTLs would be tax free rather than paying 40% tax as property can be transferred between a married couple without CGT. Currently I make no use of my tax free allowance.

The IHT is also an important factor as I have to take such a mix of drugs with so many side effects that I cant see myself living to an old age.

I was at a conference in Birmingham once.
I popped out for a walk shop and I was grabbed by a bloke outside the town hall.

He asked me to be a witness at his friends wedding. Theirs had not turned up.
In fact none of their guests or family had turned up Sad

They were a couple with two children and they were all dressed up to the nines in a um er interesting way.

The bloke who grabbed me had on one of those sky blue polyester suits and a frilly shirt and a really old fashioned hearing aid (like the one Morrisey used to wear).

When they were getting married the woman started to cry (happy tears) and her DD got all worried and remember saying 'you know mum is crying because she is happy dont you?'

I gave the DD a fiver or a tenner (dont remember) and said 'buy mummy and daddy a wedding present' (I didnt know the ettiquette for that sort of thing but I felt the need to contribute something Blush ).

I did it quitely but the DD was so shocked she sort of waved it about and they all looked at it as if I had given them £10,000!
Mum started crying again.

It was all weird and touching and lovely and strange at the same time.

A few months later I got a really blurry photo in the post and lots of confetti Grin

I had forgotten all about it till I saw this thread!

ValentineBombshell · 11/04/2012 20:32

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 11/04/2012 20:55

Ask a Big Issue seller - have heard of others doing that. I'd have loved to be asked when I used to sell it Grin

lazymonkeyface · 11/04/2012 21:55

Oh id love to help!

I live in Bolton, but can travel to somewhere fairly local! I just bought a dress for my sil's wedding and id love to wear it again :-D

Winkly · 11/04/2012 22:09

Working in that registry office was my absolute favourite job, seeing all the different weddings. One of the most romantic ones I ever saw was a couple who popped in on their lunch break in their jeans, with a bunch of flowers from the Sainsbos express across the road and 2 children & two random witnesses in tow. They just clearly loved each other SO much. And the youngish couple, who loved each other equally, she looked beautiful in her charity shop wedding dress (she told me this) with her dad on her arm, going to walk down the aisle to her fiance - a big white wedding on a tiny budget. Such happy people, all having the wedding they wanted.

Enjoy your wedding OP, even if you see it as purely a financial transaction, its still a public statement of your love and commitment whether the public is the street drinker (wouldn't recommend it where I worked, can't imagine they were fit to sign a legal document) or 500 of your closest friends

Bohica · 11/04/2012 22:20

Aww, go on.

Have a MN witness wedding

I'm in Essex and have 3 flower girls if you want them!
