AIBU?

To think Wine is overrated?

I just don't get what all the fuss is about, I've tried to 'like' it, and wish i did, but I would much prefer a vodka and coke.

DP opens a bottle to have with dinner and I do have a glass but to me, it just tastes like
vinegar! Whenever we go to people's houses for dinner, out comes the wine!

Red wine gives me a splitting headache so I only drink white and rose. Ive tried loads of different bottles but none have really hit the spot. Where am I going wrong? I am determined to enjoy a bottle of wine! I want to know what all the fuss is about.

What do you all drink? I need an inoffensive wine, if that makes sense, nothing overpowering, not too acidic (!) Also a wine that doesn't give you a banging headache the next day! TIA!

Oh I must clarify. By new books, I meant new TO ME. The age of the books is, of course, an irrelevance. HTH. Grin

I'm trying to think of alcohol I enjoy.

I like cherry brandy and diet coke. I like Crabbies. I like a medium dry scrumpy. I enjoy nice pale ale or lagers (NOT Fosters/Stella crap). I like cocktails and amaretto.

I dislike most wine, all red wine, anything too sweet and fizzy (like the fruit ciders and alcopops etc). I also dislike Champagne. The posher it is, the grosser it is too.

Agree vodka get better with price but not wine. I like a nice bottle[or 2] of Barefoot rose or a Hardy's crest merlot both about a fiver. My in laws buy expensive stuff and that does taste like vinegar

I didn't truly 'get' wine until I was lucky enough to come across some fantastic sommelliers. I'd recommend going to your nearest Hotel du Vin for lunch and letting the sommellier introduce you to some of the amazing things that can happen to your tastebuds when wine and food are in perfect harmony. It really is a revelation. I never liked sweet wines, always thought them a bit common and unsophisticated, then someone introduced me to the combination of dark chocolate pudding and Maury.

I prefer the more mid-range wines such as Gewurtztraminer.

You don't like wine. Lucky you, less chance of liver disease.

I only like white zinfandel Blush Hate white and red despite various people trying to get me into it wouls much rather have a vodka and lemonade but apparently thats a bit 'ooh on the voddys eh hardcore!' for the wine drinkers (who then demolish the bottle whilst i have a couple of glasses of vodka) Hmm

i used to love white wine (never red) but stopped when i hit 30. Or more precisely the wine stopped loving me when i hit 30. Blackouts after a coule of glasses, crying, embarrassing behaviour, god awful hangovers, vomiting etc. I turned to beer and have never looked back.

If i do have a glass of white with dinner it's a bland dry pinot grigio, soave, frascati. Nothing fruity or oaky

Not fussed for wine either - a gin and tonic for me please. Or my lunchtime tipple of choice; babycham on the rocks.

Throw a slug of vodka in your posh white wine.

Brandy works best in red.

(I think it is important to always tried to find the middle line :o )

YANBU - I am the same. I have tried expensive wines and champagnes and while I can tell some are more subtle than others, anything white tastes to a greater or lesser extent like vinegar to me. Some Reds I like - but if I drink more than a couple of glasses I am sick and have a killer migraine most of the next day. Why bother? Ditto whisky/bourbon.

I dont think we have a "less sophisticated" palate - how ridiculous - just a different one. I firmly believe that some people genetically just wont like the taste of wine as much as others - same way some people can't stand what seem to me like inoffensive foods like peas or cucumber.

I like the bubbly stuff

Can't touch red wine, it goes in one way and out the other in a matter of minutes (think it has something to do the tanning?)

Oh, I also like a voddy and coke (vodka, lime and soda in the summer). Oh, and a G&T, and a bailey and a ..................

Depends on my mood really Grin

Agree wine generally does not taste that good.

What I really love is Kahlua and Milk. It's coffee flavour liquor but almost a bit chocolatey.

Oh but I do like fizzy wine of whichever variety....Cava or the proper Champs. Tastes much better with bubbles.
