AIBU?

To think Wine is overrated?

I just don't get what all the fuss is about, I've tried to 'like' it, and wish i did, but I would much prefer a vodka and coke.

DP opens a bottle to have with dinner and I do have a glass but to me, it just tastes like
vinegar! Whenever we go to people's houses for dinner, out comes the wine!

Red wine gives me a splitting headache so I only drink white and rose. Ive tried loads of different bottles but none have really hit the spot. Where am I going wrong? I am determined to enjoy a bottle of wine! I want to know what all the fuss is about.

What do you all drink? I need an inoffensive wine, if that makes sense, nothing overpowering, not too acidic (!) Also a wine that doesn't give you a banging headache the next day! TIA!

I didn't say that people who like modern art and jazz are pretentious, I said that I think modern art and jazz are bollocks, just my opinion.
Pretentious is an ex bf who, when we went for a quick lunch in Pizza Hut one time, ordered a bottle of wine. When it arrived, instead of just opening and pouring it, he did the whole swirly, sniffy routine before pronouncing it "Perfect" in a very smug voice. The waitress was nearly wetting herself and I just wished someone would make me disappear! Blush

If you really are keen to like it, get yourself a decent New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. If you don't like that, then you probably won't like any wine.

I took my trolley full of wine onto the bus, and some idiot demanded I make way for her buggy and child. I told her to sod off. AIBU?

You have to work hard at it. I could'nt drink wine until I shared a flat with friends from uni. I quickly learned that all booze would be nicked from the fridge but red wine is drunk at room temp. I could hide my bottles in the hidden drawers in my divan bed. I soon developed a real taste for it Grin

I'm a Jack of all boozes. Especially Jack, funnily enough. I like red wine on nights where I just want to relax in the bath or with a book because spirits always are guarenteed to get me too tipsy after 2 (I like them strong) so wine is a nice, mellow drink that does have it's place.

I'm one of those odd freaks who really loves heavy oaked Chardonnay. Its hard to find because its so unpopular! I went into Walters Wine Bar in Melbourne and asked them for their most oaky, heavy, headache-inducing piss coloured Chardonay and she said "I know just what you want!" and poured me the most divine glass of horses-piss coloured stuff which tasted like rubber tires and vanilla, it was delicious!

OP, you may never really like wine by the sounds of it but you could probably learn to like some of the sweeter rosé, or could you ask for a white wine spritzer at dinner parties - its a bit naff but you would probably like the taste of it if you mix white with lemonade, and it would reduce your chances of hangover too. It won't score high on the wine-snob index but you need to like what you drink. In terms of Rosé I find the Californian ones tend to be sweeter than the Australian ones. So Ernst & Julio Gallo or whatever they are called

Steer away from Savignon Blanc, they can be quite acidic (I love sav blanc) and indeed some of the unoaked chardonnays can be very similar to sav blanc.

You could experiment with Pinot Grigio which is much more quafffable than your chardonnays and sav blancs, and would make a good base for your white wine spritzer if you want to try those.

OP I could have written your OP! YA so NBU! Smile

I have tried and tried to be a grown-up and like wine and have had various knowledgeable friends attempt to educate my palate but it just hasn't worked so I am sticking to the gin. [hic]

I don't like wine either.

And I have been fed fancy wines by ILs who are "wine buffs".

Red is simply disgusting. The only wine I like is a fairly sweet rose.

You don't have to like wine, but there's something about it that makes it relaxing and wonderful in comparison to any other alcohol (with the possible exception of whisky).

My parents let me have some from the age of about 14 onwards, and I inherited their love of of red wines with a kick to them, which doesn't sound like it would appeal to you! Cheap red wine can give awful hangovers, and my general approach to buying is to try anything that Sainbury's have 50% off on and around £6. They have a Malbec on offer at the moment that I found so smooth I ended up drinking far more of it last night than I initially intended (although, on the plus side, no hangover!)

My DP, who isn't a big wine drinker, swears by any sauvignon blanc from Marlborough in New Zealand.

My best friend is a sommelier and it absolutely kills her that I don't really enjoy wine. The only wines I actually like are un-oaked Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Prosecco. I do love the lovely Prosecco.

She keeps trying to give me big, bold Malbecs and Cabernets and I just can't do it.

Since she is a dear friend she does keep Guinness in the house for me though :)

Really? Because someone doesn't like the taste of something? Really?

Blimey.

YABU. If you don't like vinegary wines, you'll need to spend more and get a good quality wine. It's hard to find a decent red wine for less than a tenner, but if you can splash out and spend £20+, all the better. I love Malbec Mendel Argentinian red, it's gorgeous with a nice steak. I also love Pinot Noir and Merlot, (oyster bay do a nice cheap red merlot)

Considering the attitude towards fussy eaters when they are children sometimes, it is surprising that similar lack of adventure in adults with regard to what they consume is met with so little judgement. Grin

Of course it's none of my business, but adults who 'don't like the taste' of wine, beer or coffee come across in the same way as bland, fussy eaters to.

But drink what you want, it is Friday!!!!

I find most Sauvignon Blanc a bit tart actually and Pinot Grigio is not one of my favourites, though I can drink it in a tight corner.

Have to say Chardonnay is one of my favourtes.

OP have you tried a Muscadet, that can be quite pleasant and not too "heavy".

Probably it is harder to get a taste for red if you still don't like white.

If you don't like it,don't drink it all the more for me . Life wouldn't be worth living without chilled white wine, good cheese and new books, FACT.

But Springchicken I tried, I really tried! I always thought that I'd be a proper grown-up and learn to like wine but at the tender age of 46 I've just had to throw in the towel.

Can I add that I am a bit of a foody, not at all fussy, love strong flavours and am a bit of a coffee snob but I just haven't managed to acquire a taste for wine (or beer). Shock

It's not my fault! [stamps foot]
