To think Wine is overrated?

I just don't get what all the fuss is about, I've tried to 'like' it, and wish i did, but I would much prefer a vodka and coke.

DP opens a bottle to have with dinner and I do have a glass but to me, it just tastes like
vinegar! Whenever we go to people's houses for dinner, out comes the wine!

Red wine gives me a splitting headache so I only drink white and rose. Ive tried loads of different bottles but none have really hit the spot. Where am I going wrong? I am determined to enjoy a bottle of wine! I want to know what all the fuss is about.

What do you all drink? I need an inoffensive wine, if that makes sense, nothing overpowering, not too acidic (!) Also a wine that doesn't give you a banging headache the next day! TIA!

I've sat in restaurants with people whilst they dissect the wine, i didn't haven't clue what they were on about but it sounded so pretentious.

There's a marvellous booklet called "bluffers guide to wine" or somesuch - just learn a few pretentious phrases and trot them out, you will quickly realise almost no-one else knows anything either :)

you don't have to like it, it's ok

fwiw, I wasn't interested until I reached 35 or so.
I still only drink white

but now I find that it kills me
so I'm too old to drink it

If you stick to wines less than 12%, you shouldn't get a bad head. Pink Cava is a nice light refreshing wine; Sainsburys and Tesco do nice ones. Also you can buy Prosecco in Aldo, and if you put a bit of Creme de Cassis in the glass before you pour it, it makes a very nice sparkling wine.
Avoid Chardonnay or anything else oaked like the plague if you don't like a strong taste. It's horrible!
My sister makes a lovely summer drink by soaking raspberries in a bit of brandy overnight. Then she puts it all in a jug with some chilled Lambrusco (shock horror!) It's great for hot days, and because the Lambrusco is very low volume, it doesn't get you bladdered.

Do you think wine is like modern art? As in lots of people rave about it, but really it's a load of bollocks? Wink

If you get told often enough something is great/good then you begin to believe it yourself.

OP - try the Brown Brothers Tarrango - I really think that will be one you love

Vodka-wise agree Grey Goose is yummy (but not cheap)

Just drink what you like. No need for snobbery. Most wine is palatable and drinkable, but then we get the odd bottle that is like heaven.

Nowadays if I get tipsy it's because the wine is so nice rather than because I aimed to get drunk.

You're right - it is snobby.

Riesling is devil's wee.

Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.

If it costs less than about £7 it is probably crap.

Any one else noticed Tesco have about three cheap wines officially priced at £9.99, at any one time two of them are sitting ignored on a lonely top shelf while one is being aggressively promoted as HALF PRICE THIS WEEK ONLY!!! then next week it goes back to £9.99 and the next one goes on promotion at (eg) BUY TWO FOR £10!!!!

I think a lot of modern art and most modern jazz is bollocks, but a lot of wine is fab! Grin

Smirnoff red is rough as fuck. General advice is to avoid anything with a red label! Their more expensive bottles (blue and black) have a smoother taste due to a higher alcohol percentage.

Keeping the vodka in the freezer further refines the taste and makes it easier to drink straight. The high % will stop it freezing.

If you don't like the taste of pure vodka, try a flavored one. Absolut have a healthy range and you can also get bison grass vodka which is more traditional.

Think we can play the wine snobs at their own game Grin

I hate wine! I honestly do not see the appeal.. Iam a navy rum & diet coke drinker myself so must have very unique tastebuds. I could drink it all day as i absolutely love the taste Blush
I very rarely drink though (havent touched a drop for 1 year and before that was only 3 glasses) but i think thats to do with absolutely hating what alcohol does to people (eg my mum and sister)

So no you Perfectly within your rights to dislike wine, i do too!!!!!

Avoid Chardonnay or anything else oaked

Most Chardonnay isn't oaked though. I don't get the anti-chardonnay thing some people have. The Chardonnay to avoid (IMO) is the really yellow stuff (looks like piss) that says it is oaked on it. Chablis is 100% chardonnay and is usually fucking gorgeous.

I can't stand really old red wine with sediment that a lot of "wine buffs" go on about. To me it often tastes like wood. I like wine that tastes of grapes or other fruit! I don't mind if it's a bit floral either.

The difference with wine is the more you drink th better it gets :)

There are many different flavours of wines, not all are sour - sory, "dry" - the best way to become and expert is to pour many different wines down your neck :)

Ive tried loss of wine and can't find one I actually like. I have some Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio in the fridge which are drinkable but I only really like it once I've had several a few glasses.

It's full of calories though, that's why I mainly stick to vodka and diet coke.

I like it. Not all of it - some isn't to my taste - but most of it.

i don't like sweet drinks so anything 'n coke is out! As is anything with brandy or rum. And as for all those vile fruit-flavoured drinks. To my mind anything sweet containing alcohol just ends up tasting like cough medecine.

Grin at chili vodka. Used to go to a vodka bar with 100 flavours! I remember drinking chili vodka and needing to chase it with Fox's glacier mint vodka to get rid of the burn!
