To want the nanny to cook real fish not fish fingers

PumpUpTheJam · 22/03/2012 17:50

Nanny to 18 mo DD says she does not like the smell of fish and will only make fish fingers. I think that on a full salary and with just one kid to look after she can occasionally force herself to do this! Any strong opinions?

Jamie Oliver fish fingers are yummy and very nutricious-served with broccoli and a splash of home made tomato sauce :)

RitaMorgan · 22/03/2012 19:03

I think this is a really trivial thing to fall out with a good nanny over.

exoticfruits · 22/03/2012 19:04

Cook fish when she isn't on duty-problem sorted!

Or make your own fish-cakes (in finger shapes if it helps) freeze them and let her cook those.

If you are happy with everything else, it is a very minor problem.

Fraktal · 22/03/2012 19:08

Why buy fishfingers If you don't want DD having them?

Fishfingers are fine but if it's that important make a fish pie or buy a premade one or find other frozen fish solutions like frozen prawns chucked into a pasta bake.

SootySweepandSue · 22/03/2012 19:14

Mmmm well I have this exact dilemma except I don't have a nannyWink. Alas it is me who can not stand the smell of fish or the preparation of or the messy clean up of that entails. There is no way on earth I could buy and cook a piece of real fish. Just the thought makes me queasy. I rely completely on fish fingers but realistically my DD is just not going to get that much fish. Well unless DP learns how to cook something other than spag bol that isSad.

Hebiegebies · 22/03/2012 19:31

Plug for Birds eye simply bake, or is it another make?

BsshBossh · 22/03/2012 19:40

Can't you buy good quality fish fingers or make and freeze your own so all she has to do is pop them in the oven? Seems like such a trivial thing for you to fret about if she's otherwise "perfect" for your little one.

Kennyp · 22/03/2012 19:42

Ditch the bastard bitch

Hopandaskip · 22/03/2012 19:45

I was a nanny before kids. I rarely cooked fish. I can't stand the stuff, even just the smell makes me hurl. My fish repertoire was limited to fish fingers, something in a bag that doesn't smell and the oldest could open while I ran and cold tuna things.

I did however teach the kids I looked after how to make tortillas, bread and pasta from scratch, how to make cakes, salads and all other stuff.

If anyone had a problem with the lack of fish their kids ate around me they didn't ever say anything.

I am so lucky to have a fish head for a younger son. It is his favourite food, especially poke and sushi/sashimi.

vomit.

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 22/03/2012 19:46

but good quality fish fingers!

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 22/03/2012 19:46

*buy

Stratters · 22/03/2012 19:48

Fucksake what is wrong with fishfingers. Stop being so controlling and be grateful you have a lovely nanny to look after your PFB.

Unless there are other issues, in which case you have better things to worry about than fishbloodyfingers.

Hopandaskip · 22/03/2012 19:54

Honestly though, would you like your kids to be around someone who is retching every time they have fish? Is it really that important.

Oh as for the pre made fish pie etc they still stink. Even the really fresh fish stinks in the asian markets here. If it is cold it stinks less. Fish fingers stink but not so much if they stay intact (and I was very careful to do that).

I was always very honest about my lack of ability in this area. I turned down one job because when I went for an interview their house stunk of fish and they admitted they loved the stuff.

AnnoyingOrange · 22/03/2012 20:01

I love fish pie. But when we cook it the smell lingers for days

perceptionreality · 22/03/2012 20:07

YABU, in my opinion and expecting too much.

curiositykitten · 22/03/2012 20:11

Cook for your own damn child, then.

skandi1 · 22/03/2012 20:12

Buy the waitrose fish fingers. They are not orange and are 100% cod in breadcrumb. So not as nasty as the orange ones.

If your nanny cooks other meals ok then perhaps she really does hate fish. If she is lazy with the care of your DD and general cooking duties then that is another problem altogether.

Whatmeworry · 22/03/2012 20:13

Kids prefer fish fingers too.

Sorted.

Idocrazythings · 22/03/2012 20:13

YANBU. I'm a midwife and I don't know how many times I've walked into a room and had the patient go "oh here comes the "NURSE" then proceed to ignore me. There are plenty of things I find a little unpleasant about my job, but I still do it, all the time with a smile on my face. The nanny needs to "man up" and cook some fish, if that's what you want!

MarianneM · 22/03/2012 20:14

Ha ha!

People eat any vile processed stuff as long as it doesn't resemble/smell of fish/animal/vegetables.

"is she having to grill some sort of fresh fish?" - love this!

YANBU OP!

Idocrazythings · 22/03/2012 20:17

That was meant to be "the nurse"

DilysPrice · 22/03/2012 20:17

I was reading this thread and imagining the Youngs marketing manager (and indeed the MN advertising manager) crying into their Wine saying "Please, we did all that publicity and freebies and testing, can't just one of you ungrateful cows mention that Youngs extensive range of healthy Jamie Oliver approved frozen fish meals will be the perfect solution to this problem"

But then a couple of people did mention them on page 3, so I hope they feel loved again. I wasn't on the testing panel (I was too honest in the questionnaire about the fact that my entire family live on fish) but I would still recommend their little salmon and broccoli fish pies. Or posh Waitrose fish fingers.

weedoll · 22/03/2012 20:23

I've been buying sainsburys basic fish fingers, says on the packet it's pollock which is why it's cheaper. They are less than £1 for 10. Is this just basically Pollocks bollocks? Am I poisoning Ds??

Chubfuddler · 22/03/2012 20:24

The op on the nannypastagate thread was much much more fun.
