To want the nanny to cook real fish not fish fingers

PumpUpTheJam · 22/03/2012 17:50

Nanny to 18 mo DD says she does not like the smell of fish and will only make fish fingers. I think that on a full salary and with just one kid to look after she can occasionally force herself to do this! Any strong opinions?

OP posts:
OriginalJamie · 22/03/2012 18:25

sorry, any *more^ fishy

SparkyMcSparrow · 22/03/2012 18:25

Fresh fish shouldn't smell fishy

All fish smells fishy...because its fish!

voddiekeepsmesane · 22/03/2012 18:26

Wow some people are so harsh. Are there not foods that some people will not cook their families because they do not like the taste, smell or texture?

Surely cooking of fish is not such a big thing. I think that you are being a bit mean spirited by not just saying something like "thats ok, I will cook her fish on your days off (insert nanniys name)"

If you don't want her to cook fish fingers then don't buy them.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 22/03/2012 18:28

I hate dead fish, proper full on grossed out ness when I have to face dead fish, like going past the supermarket fish counter. I wouldn't cook it if you paid me triple time.

I am however ok with buying my children nice fish fingers or fillets from Waitrose, because they are covered in breadcrumbs and I can get them from packet to mouth without having to touch or see anything that resembles fish.

CarrieAnnRegardless · 22/03/2012 18:28

Fish fingers are real fish. They are unprocessed. They are covered in breadcrumbs coloured with carotene (i.e from carrots) and a little natural spice.

Calm down about the fish fingers.

Apart from anything else your 18m old dd is less likely to choke on a bone from a ff than a fillet.

FrankWippery · 22/03/2012 18:31

Fish fingers are fish. The clue's in the fucking name. Fucking hell.

Unless of course you're buying cheap arse shit made of fish tails.

KalSkirata · 22/03/2012 18:32

is the nanny a good nanny and looks after your child well? If so, forget the fish

Portofino · 22/03/2012 18:33

What on earth is wrong with fish fingers? Kids love'em don't they? I don't like fish either - unless you can guarantee there are NO bones....otherwise the thought makes me shudder. I think this a question of picking your battles...

quickhide · 22/03/2012 18:34

YABU- I am vegetarian and the only fish my kids ever eat are fishfingers. I get the omega 3 ones made out of pollock.

As a nanny yes it's her job to cook for your DD but not to follow your every whim and demand. A healthy diet does not have to include fresh fish.

Alternatively, if you feel strongly about it you could make things like fish pie on the weekend and freeze portions for her to reheat during the week.

pinktrees · 22/03/2012 18:36

Fish fingers are proper fish! What do you think they are made out of?

voddiekeepsmesane · 22/03/2012 18:37

I think that it can sometimes become like that quickhide. I think it can go like this I pay her so therefore she will do as i say.

PicaK · 22/03/2012 18:39

Well I'd look at the whole picture here. Work out what % of her time is spent cooking, divide it between the food groups (veg, fruit, protein, carbs etc), and divide that again into the actual foodstuffs.

At that point when u have worked out exactly how much she is under performing by you can decide for yourself if it's worth making a stand about.

I'd let it go myself.

CecilyP · 22/03/2012 18:41

I can't understand why you are asking the nanny. Surely, you should ask the cook to do it.

LadyHarrietdeSpook · 22/03/2012 18:43

OP YABU to post about a nanny in this section.

FishfingersAreOK · 22/03/2012 18:44

OK, Helpful head coming back. Not unreasonable to want your DD to have fish. But as someone posted above if you approach it the wrong way YABU. Nanny may have a real problem with cooking fish. I rarely do sea-bass/mackerel type meals as although I love them I cannot stand the smell in the kitchen/house skanky me, keep forgetting to change the extractor filter thingy which is totally unavoidable regardless of how good your extractor.

Sit her down and say that you would really like DD to have fish. You understand she does not like the smell of fish but there are plenty of way you can work together to introduce a more varied fish diet into DD's meals.

And as above - you need to be clear - what kind of fish do you want DD to have? Are you happy with ready-prepped stuff (Youngs/Bird's Eye shove in the oven stuff - and most supermarkets do some kind of toddler fish pie thing). I think this is perfectly reasonable for your nanny to do. No contact with the fish IYSWIM - all quite non-fishy. Or do you only want "fresh" fish? Oily Fish? Shell fish? White fish? Are you cool with prawns? Tinned tuna? I think fish can be a really scary thing to think about cooking if you have no experience. Are you happy to suggest some fish-smell free recipes from your repertoire?

If you are expecting her to gut/fillet/fry up a couple of sardines with a squeeze of lemon and garlic then, if she doesn't know how and it will really turn her stomach, then you are being a bit unreasonable I feel - as other posters have said - leave that for when you are cooking.

Frontpaw · 22/03/2012 18:44

I would make them myself then freeze for the nanny. Rather than have a vomiting nanny feeding the child.

voddiekeepsmesane · 22/03/2012 18:47

Just reread the op what the hell is "on full salary with just one kid" mean exactly?!

SparkyMcSparrow · 22/03/2012 18:49

I think it means the nanny should be grateful that she gets a full wage and only has one child to look after. Apparently its a easy life Hmm

NoWuckingFurries · 22/03/2012 18:51

Arf at cecily Grin

Portofino · 22/03/2012 18:53

I have one child and a full wage. My life is NOT easy! Grin I feed dd fish fingers though. Tonight she had chips from the Fritkot, with mayonnaise. Yum.

RavenVonChaos · 22/03/2012 18:53

I cook fish all the time but would never buy it from supermarket - no guarantee how long it's been travelling around. So unless u provide her with fish straight from the sea then UABVU.

ll31 · 22/03/2012 18:55

Dont get the nastiness of some posters towards the op - so she employs a nanny so what?

I'd be inclined to think its kind of slightly unreasonable of nanny to outright refuse to cook fish but if she's willing to cook fish fingers - then just buy good quality ones and whats the problem?

If its just this one thing then I'd have no issue - if she turns out to have lots of issues about cooking different things then I'd have expected to have known about this before employing her.

KalSkirata · 22/03/2012 18:56

cooking fish makes me want to puke. Maybe the nanny is the same?

voddiekeepsmesane · 22/03/2012 18:57

I as a nanny would also expect that my employer would take my concerns seriously rather that say "she can occasionally force herself to do this".
