i was on a family day out on a steam train and on the way home an infirm old man got on with his carer. she left shortly after and he was on his own in his wheelchair with me and my dh and dc's. this journey was about an hour long and ds being cranky started to cry. and the old man turned to him and shouted at him to be quiet boy. at this i told him to shut the fuck up and a list of words i cant mention here. dh backed me up although i was telling a friend later she said he was ok too this as he was old, we are now not speaking cause of this. AIBU for doing that to an elderly person.

One bad sentence does not make me jeremy kyle fodder.

Perhaps not. But you total lack of shame after the event and your refusal to concede you might have been wrong when faced with over 100 people telling you that you were is certainly enhancing your JK credentials with me.

Mrsjay · 19/03/2012 10:25

i asked what the old man said pages ago still no reply ,

Bucharest · 19/03/2012 10:25

Was the "bad sentence" GBH? DandD? Threatening behaviour in a public place?

A rugby player would have laughed in your face incidentally.

WorraLiberty · 19/03/2012 10:25

Why does the OP remind me of that awful woman on Youtube who ranted vile abuse on the train in front of her child?

Seriously OP, the more you post about this the worse you sound.

TheBigJessie · 19/03/2012 10:25

I'm not astounded that they exist. I am, what many here, would call a chav. But I'm a polite chav.

I'm just astounded that she had enough pseudo-self-doubt about her actions to ask on here.

IAmBooyhoo · 19/03/2012 10:26

"but to shout at a person who is less than a third his size. who cried more for him doing what he did is not on. "

but 2 fit adults swearing at an elderly disabled man in a wheelchair is ok?

Helenfellows33 · 19/03/2012 10:26

ds was in dh's arms being comforted, when hd shouted at him weare not bad parent. what more should i have done to stop him crying then ??

Is this a joke?? Of course yabu... By responding to rudeness with fuck off is showing your ds a brilliant example of how not to behave.
The fact this man was elderly doesnt matter, obscene behaviour in public really winds me up regardless of age.
This man may have had issues with dementia and surely if he was upsetting you and your ds then couldnt you have just moved away from him.....

OP, according to the wheelchairs on buses thread stated that they all get free cars anyway.
I can't link but the thread is in advanced search

HeidiHole · 19/03/2012 10:27

wow YABU how incredibly rude you were! There are ways to get your point accross without launching into a foul rant on what you say was a "family day out" presumably lots of other families and children on thsi steam train!

Disgusting.

Bucharest · 19/03/2012 10:27

The man apparently said "QUiet boy!"

Was it actually Prince Philip? Did he have a beige mac on? Big nose? Did the carer have a sausage roll curl in the middle of her head and say "hie nie brine kie"???

TandB · 19/03/2012 10:27

"infact my family and two elderly relatives had lunch in a very upmarket gastro pub the day before with no problems at all. as i said its not normal for ne to swear like a fishwife as many have you put it."

So? Nasty, aggressive people can also afford nice restaurants, you know.

Helenfellows33 · 19/03/2012 10:28

one adult and didnt shout either. i just said what i did i didnt raise my voice.

What a twit.
Why do you insist on trying to defend what you did? You WERE unreasonable the verdict is unanimous. Do you really want to be amongst people who pat your back and tell your being verbally threatening and abusive to an elderly passenger is acceptable?

squeakytoy · 19/03/2012 10:29

OP, would you have sworn at a person with learning difficulties if they had said anything to your child?

You do realise that some conditions are not always visible?

TandB · 19/03/2012 10:29

Ah, that's the problem. Disabled people get free cars so shouldn't need to take up space on steam trains.
