i was on a family day out on a steam train and on the way home an infirm old man got on with his carer. she left shortly after and he was on his own in his wheelchair with me and my dh and dc's. this journey was about an hour long and ds being cranky started to cry. and the old man turned to him and shouted at him to be quiet boy. at this i told him to shut the fuck up and a list of words i cant mention here. dh backed me up although i was telling a friend later she said he was ok too this as he was old, we are now not speaking cause of this. AIBU for doing that to an elderly person.

You have repeatedly changed your moind about what was said and will not clarify when questioned. says it all really.

Helennn · 19/03/2012 11:00

No, true - why would you lie? You couldn't go any further down in our estimation, could you?

Stratters · 19/03/2012 11:00

The old man shouted "Be quiet, boy".

To which the OP said "Why don't you shut the fuck up, you old git". Her very brave and manly DH backed her up. There is also a list of words which are even more unacceptable, even for MN.

Which, quite frankly, both baffles and horrified me in equal quantities.

AutumnSummers · 19/03/2012 11:00

*mind

ViviPru · 19/03/2012 11:00

Why won't you answer the questions? I made it all very straightforward Sad

Maybe next time you are angered, take some deep breathes and count to ten in your head.

I am trying to imagine someone shouting at my ds when he was two, I would be shocked, that is for sure. Probably would have said "Don't shout at my son, he is only two years old".

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/03/2012 11:01

So what did the man say?
Confused

Shakey1500 · 19/03/2012 11:01

Yes, you were very unreasonable.

It matters not the gender, the age, the mental capacity, the tone, the words.

You reacted unreasonably in front of your child. Who will now think it's ok to use such language. Nice.

and the threat?

ViviPru · 19/03/2012 11:03

OP you are coming very close to ruining my day now Sad

AutumnSummers · 19/03/2012 11:03

She's legged it by the look of it.

Bucharest · 19/03/2012 11:03

Just so I don't have to go and bleach the bathroom can you tell us what your handsome swain said to back you up?

Helenfellows33 · 19/03/2012 11:03

if the man had asked normally and not shouted in a threatening manner i would not have said what i did.

its was his tone rather than what he said. if he had said can you try and keep your child quiet, i would not have sworn at him.

ds was being comforted what more could we do?

'Old git'

catgirl1976 · 19/03/2012 11:04

I need to put some laundry out and sort out my re-cycling but this is far more gripping

Deux · 19/03/2012 11:04

What a vulgar guttersnipe you sound OP.

MammaBrussels · 19/03/2012 11:05

YABVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVU

It's never OK to:

  1. Launch a tirade of abuse at someone
  2. Shout at someone
  3. Swear at someone
  4. Swear in front of your children
  5. Gang up on someone 2:1
  6. Behave aggressively

The fact that you think it's OK to do this to a vulnerable person, who couldn't move away from you says that you are an absolutely abominable person who shouldn't be allowed out in public unless gagged.

You have set the worse possible example to your children. You should be ashamed of yourself.

AutumnSummers · 19/03/2012 11:05

Guttersnipe- and that is my word of the day!

PeanutButterCupCake · 19/03/2012 11:06

You have no idea what sort of issues the man may have had and he was in a wheelchair.

YABVU to have verbally abused a vulnerable old man Angry

Bucharest · 19/03/2012 11:06

ahhhhh, we're coming close....you perceived it as a threatening manner, rather than being an actual real threat.

And do you think you telling him to fuck off might have been perceived by him in an equally threatening manner?

What did your husband say?

ljgibbs · 19/03/2012 11:06

I've got decorating to do but this is more fun interesting.

sparkle101 · 19/03/2012 11:06

So it was his fault you were as vile as you were, you are taking no responsibility for your behaviour? I think whatever he said you would have reacted that way.
