to really not identify with the feminist boards on here, when i always thought I was a feminist

seems so joyless and anti sex.

I feel very conflicted now. I always thought feminism was about equality for women, which I dont believe we have, but it seems to re\lly be focusing on the wrong issues for me, and getting too much into dynamics of personal relationships, and peoples sexual preferences

im probably being unreasonable

I have just spent the last hour on the feminism board reading various threads. There are a few more controversial subjects and lots of gentler ones too. For example, why is crime fiction so popular amongst women, tv prog/films that challenge female stereotypes, why international women's day has become so big, etc.

Honestly it is far far less scary than aibu

BasilRathbone · 11/03/2012 23:01

I think women who are genuinely interested in feminism and aren't invested in living with cognitive dissonance, will read the threads if they want to.

The ones who claim to be put off feminism altogether by the FWR section, weren't really that interested in the first place IMO.

They remind me of those idiot white people who used to be all in favour of equality, until they met one black person once who looked at them funny, or pushed in front of them in the queue or something.

They weren't really all that committed to fighting racism, were they? Not if they can be put off so easily?

Beachcomber - if I misrepresnent what you're saying, it's not intentional. I don't mean to do that.
I interpret what you're saying as how it comes across to me.
OK?

I wasn't quoting you SirGin

WidowWadman · 11/03/2012 23:09

I'm still pondering whether to change my name to "F-Grade Feminist", it has a nice ring to it...

SirGinTheUnreasonable · 11/03/2012 23:12

If that's the way you read it stewie fine.

Beachcomber · 11/03/2012 23:15

OK Plumpdog - nowhere on this thread have I had a go at anyone for saying they found the FWR section unwelcoming. I have stated numerous times that I don't like the personal attacks made on feminist posters. I thought that was pretty clear. You may of course interpret it how you wish - just as I did with your posts.

diotima · 11/03/2012 23:18

Basil - You've asked whether feminists should have a makeover in order that they "won't frighten off misogynists who don't want equality anyway"

But some posters have said they're frightened to visit feminist boards. Does that mean they must be "misogynists who don't want equality anyway"?

Beachcomber - MNHQ only look at posts that are complained about. Don't blame them or their advice. I thought you said you were a grown-up? It's up to you whether you report a post. No posts that were deleted should have upset a grown-up IMO.

ShitThatsALotOfMoney · 11/03/2012 23:23

Basil "The ones who claim to be put off feminism altogether by the FWR section, weren't really that interested in the first place IMO"

Well, I can't speak for others but I haven't been put off feminism as a whole by the FWR board but I have been put off the FWR board by the FWR board.

I don't need to discuss feminism on FWR to be a feminist.

diotima · 11/03/2012 23:23

Don't be unreasonable now, SirGin Smile

Beachcomber · 11/03/2012 23:28

Diatoma this is surely getting quite tedious for us both by now, no?

As we all know MNHQ look at reported posts. They do not delete all reported posts - they deleted those which break their guidelines. We are constantly told on MN by MNHQ to report personal attacks rather than get into scraps about them. I respect MNHQ's wishes on this.

Um, I'm not upset. I reported posts that were personal attacks and which broke the guidelines.

I'm at rather a loss as to why you feel the need to keep on and on about this. Do you think personal attacks add value to discussions? Confused

Why do you keep posting 'I thought you were a grown up' in such a silly way? If you have a point to make - make it.

diotima · 11/03/2012 23:30

Beachcomber - I've made my point already

BasilRathbone · 11/03/2012 23:30

No diotima it doesn't.

Bored now, off to bed.

Night all.

Beachcomber · 11/03/2012 23:32

I'm finding the repeated defences of the right to personally attack other posters and not be reported or deleted for it quite unpleasant.

Is this par for the course in AIBU - having a go at people for following MN's rules? It is quite bullying IMO.

I saw the thread too and I was Shock at Notthefullshilling's posts.

A bit like the one above actually. Which I shall be reporting because it contains a personal attack on another poster.

diotima · 11/03/2012 23:39

Beachcomber - I think you're a big girl because you've told me so. I don't think I could bully you easily. I also promise I will never try to silence you by complaining about your posts.

ShitThatsALotOfMoney · 11/03/2012 23:40

I've reported too, that was a hateful post.

Beachcomber · 11/03/2012 23:43

Well you probably won't get much of a chance to report me as I rarely get personal with people in they way you are doing to me now.

(WTF at 'big girl')

ShitThatsALotOfMoney · 11/03/2012 23:55

Wow, MNHQ are on the ball, that was a swift deletion.

diotima · 11/03/2012 23:59

No OP, YANBU, despite feeling that you 'probably are' BU. It happens a lot that feeling.

Goodnight all.
