to think the tax credits system is not designed to support people that have as many children as they fancy and expect the state to pick up the tab?

An acquaintance has just announced she is pregnant with her fifth child. Her 4 children are by 2 separate fathers, and #5 is by a different father again. Her partner has a job in which he is unlikely to earn much more than the minimum wage. She doesn't work, and says they are heavily reliant on tax credits and housing benefit. Yet they are having baby #5, so effectively expecting that the tax credits system will just pick up the tab, as she has made several comments about how the tax credits will go up when #5 arrives.

Someone else I know who also says they are heavily reliant on TCs has recently had baby#3 and would like baby#4 in the near future. Again she says they can afford it as their tax credits will go up. The only working income coming into their home is that from her husband's 16 hours a week job in a shop, everything else is benefits.

What I'm trying to say is, those of us that support ourselves with no reliance on benefits have a cut off point of children that we can afford and we stop at that point. We stuck at 3 as that's all we can afford even though I would have liked one more. I feel that those that keep having child after child, totally reliant on tax credits, are abusing the system.

2 or 3 kids. Definitely not 5.

Whats the goat reference about? Do I need one?

LineRunner · 05/03/2012 21:36

What's highly? What's you? What's average? What's the state?

Answers please down the toilet. Ta.

I think it's quite funny that so many of you think it's ok for people to take excessively from the system.

LilacWaltz · 05/03/2012 21:37

You decided that's 'average' then op? Did you?

LineRunner · 05/03/2012 21:38

You laugh away then, and good luck at the Comedy Store try-outs.

LilacWaltz · 05/03/2012 21:38

But you take your child benefit every month for your THREE children don't you!?!?

Gimmeecoffee · 05/03/2012 21:39

Your a nob head. I work full time, I wouldn't be able to afford to work if it wasn't for tax credits paying my child care. Get off your high horse. I do hope you or you dh never loose your jobs and have to relay on benefits.

LadyBeagleEyes · 05/03/2012 21:39

If they're not friends and your'e not nice to their faces why do they tell you so many details of their lives and their finances?
I think you're making this up OP Wink

LadyLazyLongLegs · 05/03/2012 21:39

What do you think is average then Lilacwaltz?

I think your your argument is below par.

InSeine · 05/03/2012 21:41

OP I sort of know what you mean, because I would love more DC but have stopped at two because of finances. When I see some acquaintances have their 4th or 5th I do feel a bit annoyed because my automatic assumption is that they will just claim more benefits so it isn't their problem to worry if they afford more BUT then I remember that I don't really know their situation to judge and I really don't want to be in their position, managing all those DC on a low income and all the problems that come with that. So then I try to take off my judgy pants.

LadyLazyLongLegs · 05/03/2012 21:41

Gimmeecoffee, you have got the wrong end of the stick. I'm not talking about people claiming benefits or tax credits, more about people having baby after baby whilst reliant on tax credits to support them. Why would someone who is already claiming hefty benefits for 4 kids go on to have a 5th that they couldn't support financially themselves?

OP posts:
LineRunner · 05/03/2012 21:42

Why don't you ask your acquaintance?

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 05/03/2012 21:43

Meh, I know someone who's had 8 kids all on the back of dad working 16 hours a week.

I really couldn't give a flying fuck, can't say I agree with it but it's not a life I'd choose for myself, the kids seem happy enough which is all that matters really and more than can be said for some.

YABU btw.

LineRunner · 05/03/2012 21:44

These are, let's face it, unusually large families.

LadyLazyLongLegs · 05/03/2012 21:44

Someone on a low income from work with lots of children won't actually be getting a low household income though will they? In many cases they will be better off than people that don't get tax credits but have higher salaries.

Very interesting though that so many of you are so defensive. Makes it very easy to tell who is claiming the old tax credits though, eh.

I say, lets remove the children, that will cost the country at least £3000 a week, either that or sterilise everyone who earns minimum wage, it just cannot be allowed to continue

If they can parent well, leave them alone.

Moominsarescary · 05/03/2012 21:46

As akiss says why don't you try it.

What's the cut of for being able to claim tax credits now? £40,000?

Dps wages have just dropped to £24,000 a year and were entitled to £4,800 a year working tax credit. Don't worry they still have a lot less than you to live on, we have 3 children

Luckily I know dps wage will increase again over the next year and we won't be entitled to anything, I will have as many children as I like thankyou

LadyLazyLongLegs · 05/03/2012 21:47

That is my point exactly Line. Not about people having children and claiming tax credits, but those that choose to have an excessively large amount of children that they cannot afford financially.

Apocalypse I am confused. You agree with me clearly as you say you don't agree with the person having 8 kids on the back of dad working 16 hours a week yet you say I am being unreasonable.
