to think the tax credits system is not designed to support people that have as many children as they fancy and expect the state to pick up the tab?

An acquaintance has just announced she is pregnant with her fifth child. Her 4 children are by 2 separate fathers, and #5 is by a different father again. Her partner has a job in which he is unlikely to earn much more than the minimum wage. She doesn't work, and says they are heavily reliant on tax credits and housing benefit. Yet they are having baby #5, so effectively expecting that the tax credits system will just pick up the tab, as she has made several comments about how the tax credits will go up when #5 arrives.

Someone else I know who also says they are heavily reliant on TCs has recently had baby#3 and would like baby#4 in the near future. Again she says they can afford it as their tax credits will go up. The only working income coming into their home is that from her husband's 16 hours a week job in a shop, everything else is benefits.

What I'm trying to say is, those of us that support ourselves with no reliance on benefits have a cut off point of children that we can afford and we stop at that point. We stuck at 3 as that's all we can afford even though I would have liked one more. I feel that those that keep having child after child, totally reliant on tax credits, are abusing the system.

Jazz

A long time ago in days of yore a juxtaposition if benefit bashing threads arose at the same time as outraged posters recieving goats as presents. To help the poor.
A odd hybrid thread arose and a great cry went out amongst Mnetters for not only did they not have a flat screen telly like June down the road who had never worked a day in her life, but they did not have a goat! The poor people in Africa got a goat. Many were the anguished cries of the goat less and flat screen less that day.

From hence forth benefit bashing threads will always bring forth the goatless

Or to put it another way. It was a very silly thread we should have known better Grin

Christmas goats

WibblyBibble · 06/03/2012 09:23

Huh well. I live on a council estate and I don't know anyone who is 'like that', so I suspect all the mners live on the same council estate, possibly the pretend one out of shameless. I do know a lot of people like me who desperately want a job but keep getting turned down despite being overqualified. I don't feel 'grateful' for getting benefits though- I don't want benefits, I want a fucking job and I don't feel grateful to any system that doesn't have a job (all I ask apart from it being in travelling distance on public transport is that it is longer than a month if temp so my younger daughter isn't always in and out of childcare which causes later mental health issues) available for someone with a degree and lots of (university) lab experience. I'm not going to be grateful to anyone for £67 a week when I've worked harder than most rich people I know and have just been more unlucky.

cory · 06/03/2012 09:31

Let's hope the OP never loses her job or ends up in a less well paid one as some of us might feel call upon to come back and judge her for having the reckless effrontery to have 3 children, surely an excessive amount when we stopped short of 1 or 2.

We wouldn't want that, would we now?

cory · 06/03/2012 09:33

I believe in Wibbly's theory: somewhere in Britain (and not around here!) there is an Estate of the Feckless where Mumsnetters can enter for a small entrance fee when they want to have a look at real Benefit Scroungers. The contract states quite clearly that any proceeds from entering visitors must be spent on flat screen TVs and fruit shoots and not on goats.

In fairness it's the seasoned long standing Mnetters telling the op to do one Wink, the newbies will soon learn or go to netmums

Fecklessdizzy · 06/03/2012 09:38

One could watch goats on one's enormo-flatscreen with one's 10 illegitamate sprogs ( different fathers, natch. ) whilst swigging fruit shoots and scoffing Greggs deep-fried tipbits, breaking off every now and then to laugh scornfully at the OP

Or to put it another way ... Biscuit
