to think the tax credits system is not designed to support people that have as many children as they fancy and expect the state to pick up the tab?

An acquaintance has just announced she is pregnant with her fifth child. Her 4 children are by 2 separate fathers, and #5 is by a different father again. Her partner has a job in which he is unlikely to earn much more than the minimum wage. She doesn't work, and says they are heavily reliant on tax credits and housing benefit. Yet they are having baby #5, so effectively expecting that the tax credits system will just pick up the tab, as she has made several comments about how the tax credits will go up when #5 arrives.

Someone else I know who also says they are heavily reliant on TCs has recently had baby#3 and would like baby#4 in the near future. Again she says they can afford it as their tax credits will go up. The only working income coming into their home is that from her husband's 16 hours a week job in a shop, everything else is benefits.

What I'm trying to say is, those of us that support ourselves with no reliance on benefits have a cut off point of children that we can afford and we stop at that point. We stuck at 3 as that's all we can afford even though I would have liked one more. I feel that those that keep having child after child, totally reliant on tax credits, are abusing the system.

Sorry liam is that to me?

I know how it all works, I'm just wondering if you receive any kind of tax credits at all?

wigglesrock · 05/03/2012 23:16

, the uptake of benefits is not a moral choice, you really have no idea what goes on in most peoples lives and homes. Judging those who do "live" (and I use the term loosely) off benefits doesn't give you the moral high ground.

I too am off to bed, I never really got over the OPs need to explain the parentage of the children in her opening message, pissed me off from the start.

LiamsMummyJaz · 05/03/2012 23:16

porny never going to get my point across... Actually feeling quite tearful that I'm being slated this much tbh.

DamnBamboo · 05/03/2012 23:16

So if somebody works the bare minimum to get tc's is that ok?

Only works 16 hours when they could work more, but they choose not to because they don't have to?

LiamsMummyJaz · 05/03/2012 23:17

Yes I do!! But I pay my taxes. People who pay taxes should get TC and CB. Even the sodding queen Sad

DamnBamboo · 05/03/2012 23:17

This is not a slating Liams, just ignore the posts that are trying to irk you.

LiamsMummyJaz · 05/03/2012 23:18

Llam mumsnet is a strange, strange place for benefit threads, don't take it personally.

Come with me to chat its much more fun!

You have definitely had the baptisim of fire doing a benefit thread and going into Aibu!

brdgrl · 05/03/2012 23:22

Well I cast judgment!!! Me and my DP both work for minimum wage an struggle to get by and them the knobs upstairs smoke weed all fucking day and don't got work!! They've got 2 kids! Whom I fucking pay for!!

Yeah, see, actually, you don't. Unless you are putting your cash in an envelope and slipping it under their door.

You are paying taxes in return for the privilege of living in an essentially civilised society, in which the feeding, medical care, and education of children is a priority. (Perhaps not as high a priority as it should be.)

You do have choices, you know.

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 23:23

Pornyissue Taxes don't just go on benefits the sum is greater than the whole.

The entire country wouldn't stop work over night, I fail to see your point?

Taxes are a good thing and very important.... they pay for free schooling, free healthcare, a clean and healthy enviroment, care for the elderly, they benefit the impoverished and yes they are abused by people too, sometimes fraudently.

We have laws for that. I you believe some one is claiming who should not be you can report them.

Liam resents paying her tax because she resents those who claim fraudulently- I am not having a go I just think it's important to focus on where else the money goes.

I pay 40% tax, surely the fact that Liam has a home through housing benefit or her and her child and benefit toward nursery fees (If you claim it sorry to make assumptions here) is a good thing? hat comes from taxes too.

CreepyWeeBrackets · 05/03/2012 23:23

Lulz at petite considering having more kids for money and a goat and will it pay for my nanny.

Puntastic !

LiamsMummyJaz · 05/03/2012 23:25

Yes but but but!! I'm putting money in a pot that they have never put any money into! Yet! There taking more out of it than me!! Please understand why I am pissed off?

LiamsMummyJaz · 05/03/2012 23:26

I don't claim anything other than cb and TC. I don't have housing benefit. I pay full rent and council tax ect. And I am actively -trying- to save for a mortgage!

petitema · 05/03/2012 23:27

Thanks creepy, will it though? Please can I have a nanny goat from the pot.

petitema · 05/03/2012 23:27

tc and cb Hmm

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 23:29

Yes but that's what taxation is Grin

Liam, you are taking a hell of lot more than I get back in terms of hard cash. I'm not going to tell you to work harder and longer hours to earn as much as me. Or make assumptions about you.

Be grateful that you are privliged to pay taxes. Society has its dregs be greatful for your values and pity those without

LiamsMummyJaz · 05/03/2012 23:29

Tax credits and child benefit. petite please read your other thread before you continue..

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 23:29
petitema · 05/03/2012 23:30

eh?

Pornyissue · 05/03/2012 23:30

Honey I know where taxes go

but they also go on benefits

The point is, if no one worked, no one is taxed, there is nonfunding and benefits system would collapse. So it's perfectly fair for a tax payer to say they are funding someone else's benefit. It's not a judgement it's a pure fact.

At times I have had other people fund benefits when I have been in need and felt grateful and I think it's wrong when others don't also appreciate this.

petitema · 05/03/2012 23:30

Link please

LiamsMummyJaz · 05/03/2012 23:31

I know!! I am not saying stop giving them benefits! That's unfair on the children! It's just I don't know how people can do it! I live like I say in a council estate where I see it everyday.
