In the dry cleaners this morning. Perfectly pleasant young man serving - he was polite and everything. His t-shirt said "Doggy style. The bitches love me". Why is this ok? It isn't ok. I'm pissed off.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 26/02/2012 20:36

it's such a woolly hypothetical it's hard to answer

scottishmummy · 26/02/2012 20:38

I challenged the global assumption that if I dint challenge the tshirt I don't chalkeng the word or usage in rl

like most things it depends, contextvand all that

MardyBra · 26/02/2012 20:41

seeker - just teasing about the typos Wink

seeker · 26/02/2012 20:42

If you don't challenge you are saying it's OK. There is no escape from that. Not challenging because you can't be arsed, or are too busy campaigning for world peace or you are frightened to is understandable. Not challenging because you think it's funny, or because you think it would be "uptight" is quite another.

fedupofnamechanging · 26/02/2012 20:44

seeker, to answer your question, I personally wouldn't prohibit anyone from wearing a t-shirt that most other people would find offensive. In a free society, people should have the right to freely demonstrate that they are a dickhead. It gives everyone else a heads up on what kind of person they've encountered.

scottishmummy · 26/02/2012 20:45

no,it's about pick your battles don't sepweat the dross
I dint stridently address every ideological irk or misrepresentation I hear or see.or else frankly I'd combust. I do pick my battles and when I do feel aggrieved am capable of akin a cogent point

Whatmeworry · 26/02/2012 20:47

What we are saying is that this is an example of how there is a low level disparagement of women throughout society, and to find it acceptable is saying you don't mind. It's not life or death. It's not drought or famine. But it does say something about the society our daughters (and our sons) are growing up in. And we should be making that society better for them, not worse

I fail to see how a society where even T shirt slogans are censored by humourless harridans is a better one.

Teenage boys will always do things to shock and upset the fogeys, its what they do - and the fogeys will always be shocked and upset, it's what they do.

MardyBra · 26/02/2012 20:49

Yes, sometimes I don't challenge stuff that I don't agree with. When my dad comes out with yet another comment about "women's work" or "lady drivers". To be fair, I've challenged him so many times over the years, that I know he's not going to change his casual sexism, so I limit myself to an occasional challenge in order to preserve the vestiges of our relationship. In fact, it's generally dd rolling her eyes these days. That doesn't mean I don't think he's a dinosaur.

(not sure what this is adding to the argument, but thought I'd share anyway)

ArtVandelay · 26/02/2012 20:50

Seeker I pretty much agree with everything you've said regarding the wrongness and reasons for wrongness of the bitch T-Shirt. I think there are many unacceptable things to wear on a T-Shirt but unfortunately trawling the internet tells me that pretty much anything can be put on a T-Shirt and bought. I just wish that the nay-sayers and mockers that think its just a T-Shirt and that they have all these bigger problems and issues could make the connection between, at least a fair few of these issues and problems with a misogynistic and woman hating culture.

(I'll wear a MARP T-Shirt with you, over my dungarees and fat body that never has a laugh or gets any sex cos I'm a feminist)

tangledupinblue2 · 26/02/2012 20:50

YANBU OP

seeker I think you speak much sense

I am really surprised and a bit depressed by the responses here condoning this man's choice of garment.

MardyBra · 26/02/2012 20:50

I feel the level of debate has slipped somewhat when one side starts calling the other "humourless harridans".

seeker · 26/02/2012 20:54

"Humourless harridans"

Words completely fail me. I give up. So you want your daughters to grow up in a society where it's ok to go round with "liquor in the front, poker in the rear" written on your chest, and where calling women bitches is normal and funny? Great. Just great.

scottishmummy · 26/02/2012 20:54

mardy one comment isn't representative off all, views
so do lose the fey indignation

tangledupinblue2 · 26/02/2012 20:54

humourless harridans Biscuit Hmm

ArtVandelay · 26/02/2012 20:56

Yes, and also whyis it humourless harridans that are censoring? Because women are the easy target. Imagine this... young lad walks down Brixton wearing a T-Shirt that says 'I love the Clan' or 'N go home' he'd get the s knocked out of him after a few minutes. I have therefore never seen this happen. I did once see a lad in a Neo Nazi get-up walk through Kings Cross and people white, black, Asian, everyone were shouting insults at him, someone even threw their coffee at him. Women are perceived as easy targets.

scottishmummy · 26/02/2012 20:57

are you two going to dine out in one daft comment
I don't agree with that comment, but nor us it representative of other views and it isn't carte Blanche to feel got at and ohmyverygosh

MardyBra · 26/02/2012 20:59

Actually I'll take harridan on the nose. Humourless hurts!

AllPastYears · 26/02/2012 21:08

I think the t-shirt is not OK. Does he own the place? If not, I'm surprised his employer lets him do a customer-facing job wearing that.

scottishmummy · 26/02/2012 21:09

indeed I'd expect a more neutral attire in a public role

bumpsnowjustplump · 26/02/2012 21:10

scottishmummy · 26/02/2012 21:18

pint and half pint dad & lad t shirts
no,trying too hard.
and failing

seeker · 26/02/2012 22:54

Well, if you've all got better things to do than protest bout sexist lqnguge nd hideous objectification of women, I'm sure you will have time to write a letter or two about this

Or is that not important enough for you either?
