to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

Thats appalling Sancti. Just what are Carers expected to do with the person they care for. I cant imagine there's 'childcare' for a 26 yo with the mental age of a baby.
So Carers will either starve or put their adult child into residential (if there's any places) costing the taxpayer £3000 per WEEK.
Well thats a fucking stupid idea. Gideon and his cronies are stupid dangerous knobends.

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 20:33

Oh and anyone that thinks this may lead to work is naive: I remember three times in the early nineties being made to train YTS kids who then got my job because they received £35 a week instead of my actual wage.

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 20:35

Kalskirata- yes theya re.

And of course there is a reason job centre workers are now being given suicide training. Seriously. And disability charities are reporting many cases of suicidal people. Many of course will already have MH issues (more common in disabled people / carers anyway even before you get to those disabled with MH disorders...)

If people kill themselves is that state sanctioned or just worth looking the other way, I wonder?

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 20:40

And Kal that wasn't just any Republican, that was one of the front runners for President nomination supporting child labour

irishkitkat · 16/02/2012 20:40

Tesco have always been very quick to take on "free" staff, my DH started with them on a YTP in the early 90s as did 7 other young fellas who were doing the same course as him. They literally worked 40 hrs plus a week for whatever the training allowance was at that time, £20 odd I think. Luckily enough, he was kept on and has actually made a decent career out of it but he was the only one, the other guys were replaced with fresh trainees as soon as their course ended.

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 20:44

If I am right in remembering Tesco get paid for each new workfare person they take on; why would they hire people and pay THEM?

MidnightWorry · 16/02/2012 20:44

Beta, I think the gov know exactly what they are doing. Its planned.

molepom · 16/02/2012 20:55

details of a march that's being organised if anyone cares to take an interest.

nagynolonger · 16/02/2012 20:57

I remember that happening with YTS and I have heard of it happening now with so called apprentices replacing agency and adult workers in factories.
I won't shop at Tescos again. Is Morrisons OK?

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 20:57

Apparently T K Maxx have just withdrawn from workfare (and Waterstones did a week or so ago)- neither shops I use much as mean a drive but will be visiting more often now!

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 20:58

I'd like to know if Morrisons OK too; Lidl ? Aldi don;t stock special diet stuff we need but would like to skip Tesco now

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 20:58

The following voluntary organisations are also using claimants? forced labour:

Age Concern
Barnados
British Heart Foundation
Cancer Research
Capability Scotland
Gorgie City Farm
Marie Curie
PDSA
Saffron Acres Project
Salvation Army
Shelter

Taken from www.boycottworkfare.org/?page_id=16

It also seems that libraries and local authourities are also using forced labour

KateSpade · 16/02/2012 20:59

Sancti
Seriously? Thats awful? I can't believe that's actually happening!

But any Job centre employee i've ever spoken too has been the most useless person I've ever met, with no obvious training, never mind suicide training!

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 21:03

It's happening! Have a child over a certain age and you HAVE to do or workfare 36 hours a week; MR care (which can be any severity of disability as long the person sleeps- so a violent person or somone with an extremely low functioning age) and you get a remission to 20 hours. HR care and you are exempt, but whilst we get HRC for ds1 I seriously doubt that we will have it extended in current climate (though a 12 year old who requires an adult nearby all day surely should be!). I plan to work wnyhow but I am lucky.

My Aunt worked for the JobCentre; she has the least empathy of anyone I know. She is a nasty piece who screams at my Mum for not devoting 24/7 to my elderly grandad.... however I know nice job centre workers too, one in the frotehrs community IIRC

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 21:08

A freind of mine worked for the job centre and volunteered for the samaritans and she was lovely. She did say though that they had panic buttons and security in Eastbourne. That was a few years ago, now they'll need an ambulance outside and a nurse to treat the sick!

KateSpade · 16/02/2012 21:08

At my Job centre, i often go down with my brother, if I'm off work as he's got special needs, we always have to wait ages, and they almost seem to talk down to the people their meant to be 'helping'

I don't know if its just my town, or their all like that?

EightiesChick · 16/02/2012 21:10

I am less uneasy with voluntary organisations taking people on placement because at least then they are working to help a life-improving cause for others.

However, it is an utter disgrace that profit-making companies (and those making HUGE profits, to boot) are using the scheme.

Have signed the e-petition against Workfare - I'll link it here one more time. Is there an email address or something to let Tesco know that they are losing customers over this?

AThingInYourLife · 16/02/2012 21:10

"I will be shopping in sainsbury's from now on."

Me too.

Petition signed.

Also really sick of hearing that it's OK for people to be forced to work for free for charities or small businesses.

NO - it's NOT OK for people to be working for free (subsidised by the taxpayer).

If work needs doing, it needs to be paid for BY THE EMPLOYER.

SardineQueen · 16/02/2012 21:11

Our jobcentre is fine. I do think from my experience and threads on here that your experience depends on area - in places with higher unemployment / less jobs / other problems things are much harder in the jobcentres. Same as other types of public-facing businesses IYSWIM.

So maybe you have some tory MP who signed on once in 1998 in kingston-upon-thames, and it was all lovely, saying OOOH it's all lovely they are far too easy CLOBBER THEM

PS I do not live in kingston-upon-thames Grin

SardineQueen · 16/02/2012 21:12

Oh I signed the petition earlier too Smile

SardineQueen · 16/02/2012 21:13

YAY since I signed earlier there are 500 more signatures!!!

GO MN!!!!

molepom · 16/02/2012 21:16

Can we get the power of MN behind this one too please?

SantiMoanyArses posts above falls under this along with many, many other petitions that are out there.

catgirl1976 · 16/02/2012 21:17

Could someone link to the petition (am too tired lazy to read through the whole thread to find it)

misty0 · 16/02/2012 21:18

Sorry if this has been pointed out already, but i read way upthread someone saying this only kicks in for those who have been out of work for 12 months or more.

WRONG - my daughter graduated from college (vetinary studies) last July and found (retail) work through the autumn till xmas.

She signed on for JSA 3 weeks ago and is now already half way through a 25 hour per week bloody workfare placement at SAVERS part of the Superdrug partnership.

Another for the list then Sad

EightiesChick · 16/02/2012 21:20

catgirl - I posted the link again 6 posts up from you. Just scroll a bit! Smile
