to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

Oh right - will scroll

Am not that lazy :)

EightiesChick · 16/02/2012 21:26

misty0 This is pretty much the situation that will be tested out in the High Court. The person who's taking the case is a geology graduate who was forced to work in Poundland, and her argument, I think, was that she had worked in retail, pubs and so on as a student and her placement wasn't in anyway developing her, giving her new skills or making her any more employable. The same would be true for many recent graduates, who are likely to have worked in the retail and service industries during their degrees and will already have acquired shelf-stacking and till-operating skills. It's ridiculous to pretend that the scheme does anything other than provide free labour for large companies who can well afford to pay for it at market rate. I will be interested to see how the court case turns out.

NormanTebbit · 16/02/2012 21:29

Petition signed

misty0 · 16/02/2012 21:32

Petition signed.

eighties chick - yes i'll be watching with interest too. Sadly i dont hold out alot of hope though.

I'd rather see my DD pushing a broom around a vetinary waiting room than the back room of a pound store. I could at least see some logic in that. But there's no choice for where these youngsters are sent.

TapselteerieO · 16/02/2012 21:47

Petition signed. I will be boycotting Tesco and Boots, does anyone have a link to a list of offending companies?
Angry

LatteLady · 16/02/2012 21:48

I have signed the petition too. Is it possible to have a full list of groups participating in Workfare... I will be boycotting them and so will my friends and family.

Nilgiri · 16/02/2012 21:49

There have also been cases brought by entirely voluntary interns like KateSpade. The story about it in the Guardian also has other very informative links.

There's no coercion for interns, but otherwise the case is the same: you work for a company, you get paid by a company.

WetAugust · 16/02/2012 21:50

Disgusting.

No problem with JSA for working on non-profit community projects.

No prpblem with JSA for working for a charity.

Huge issue with working for a multi-national such as Tesco for just JSA.

The work they are doing for JSA provides direct benefit to Tesco so the worker should be paid the going rate.

I'm frothing Angry

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 21:55

Didn't Nick Clegg have quite a lot to say about unpaid internships in banks and law firms? or did I imagine this?

Nilgiri · 16/02/2012 21:59

Civil servants' recommendation of "no changes to the law and a focus on increasing both paid and unpaid internships numbers ? is at dramatic variance with statements by the deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, who said last spring that he wanted an end to unpaid internships as they reduced social mobility."

From that same Guardian article.

carernotasaint · 16/02/2012 22:00

Havent had time to read this whole thread so apologies if you have already seen this article but in case you havent .............

AngryAngryAngry bump.

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 22:27

That list is grim, you would expect this of Asda and Tesco, Primark and Poundland but Shelter. I used to pay monthly to support Shelter and I have always thought that is was a brilliant charity. Whilst I think it's great that they offer volunteering opps to former homeless people it's not acceptable to exploit slave labour. For me it's either raise funds and pay wages or have government funded serfs, I won't support them.

molepom · 16/02/2012 22:30

PDSA was the one that made me double check the list.

There's a hell of a lot of places I will be avoiding for as long as I can.

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 22:40

epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/29356 have signed the petition and posted a new link

Kent is awash with exploiting bastards, glad I'm in Sussex.

Do you think it would be reasonable to stop supporting these charities?

BertieBotts · 16/02/2012 22:49

ON NEWSNIGHT NOW - BBC2

GoingForGoalWeight · 16/02/2012 22:50

McHappyPants2012 · 16/02/2012 22:58

signed, sealed and posted on facebook lol

TapselteerieO · 16/02/2012 22:59

I agree minimathsmouse & molepom about being surprised at charities doing this.

I will boycott Tesco, Asda, Boots etc until they stop participating.

choppychopster · 16/02/2012 23:00

watching Newsnight. Have signed petition. Angry

MrsDeeBee · 16/02/2012 23:02

I watched Newsnight. Just makes me even more Angry.

David Cameron's Big Society.

I am wondering, if this is why it will be called 'Universal Credit'. Are we all to become a nation of 'volunteers', eventually ?

Makes you wonder...

carernotasaint · 16/02/2012 23:04

Im watching Question Time and workfare at Tesco has been mentioned on there by Owen Jones. Will have to catch Newsnight on i player.

gettingagrip · 16/02/2012 23:16

Signed both petitions. Disgusting the whole thing. I have a couple of friends with cancer. They both had highly skilled jobs for thirty years which they CANNOT DO NOW AS THEY HAVE CANCER.

The thought of them being forced to stack shelves at Tesco or Poundland makes me feel sick.

I also know several people with very severe MH issues who have 'failed' the ATOS test. The effects on them have been dreadful.

Shame on you Cameron.
