to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

Just re-read my bolding, it was in reference to LAbaby's 'in this finanical climate comment'

DorisIsWaiting · 18/02/2012 20:34

i think you may be right molepom

PeahenTailFeathers · 18/02/2012 20:35

I've been barred from posting on Tesco's facebook site. I'm so pleased with myself Grin
Does anyone know why there's an almost total media blackout on this story? As far as I can see, there are only a couple of newspapers running with this huge story and there's nothing on either the BBC news channel or their website.
Perhaps this is why Tesco are cocky enough to think that they will get away with using unpaid labour because surely they should have withdrawn from Workfare by now. I think it's going to be very difficult for Tesco to recover from this if they don't back down soon.

carernotasaint · 18/02/2012 20:39

Im sorry i dont agree with charities using forced labour either.
BECAUSE A CHARITY SUCH AS THE BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION COULD THEN HAVE THE POWER TO GET SOMEONE SANCTIONED. Charities are suppossed to be there to help people not blackmail them. Im a carer for my DH who has stable chronic heart failure. Imagine if i was put on workfare at the British Heart Foundation and got sanctioned due to illness. We are the kind of couple they could/should be helping and advising not blackmailing and santioning.
SOME PEOPLE STILL CANT SEE THE GLARING MASSIVE CONFLICT OF INTEREST HERE. Not to mention the blatent hypocrisy.

thecook · 18/02/2012 20:41

Carenotasaint. - Reed are bastards. I was with them and they asked me to go to an apppointment. I had a French exam at the Institut Francais that day. I was studying French in my own time in the hope it would lead to employment. I offered to attend the previous day and the one following the exam. Despite showing her the exam entry slip the bitch reported me to the JobCentre. I got sanctioned and the reasons cited were that this would not help me get a job. Utter bollocks. In London I have seen jobs for a PA with fluent French.

minimathsmouse · 18/02/2012 20:43

Beenbeta even making people do work for the community is counter productive to growth and prosperity.

If people are paid especially if they are paid a living wage then the welfare bill comes down, they spend their money in the open market and tax returns increase. What is needed is a policy that compels businesses to employ people and encourages growth. We also need to find a way of weaning all workers off of tax credits and place the responsibility for fair pay back on the employers. We also need to ensure that these companies pay their taxes. Tesco owe over 100million in tax. Don't tell me they won't employ because if they don't staff their shops they will have to close them and that won't happen.

Even Super-Injunction imposed news blackouts were ultimately no match for the tidal wave of twitter speculation. Wink

We'll just have to keep at 'em Grin

KateSpade · 18/02/2012 20:45

I didn't post and run, I've been watching sport relief and Desperate Housewives.

I would hope that the people that are terminally ill tell the government where to stick it, and hope they have supportive families around them that can help and take care of them, i know thats not always the case, but that is so far over the line.

This government has changed so many things, i wouldn't know where to start,
Money is such a problem, it causes more problems than it solves, lets make everything free... Hmm that wouldn't work but...

PeahenTailFeathers · 18/02/2012 20:48

Thanks, Nun. Going to spend all night tweeting now :)

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 20:50

I agree about a media blackout, I can't find anything googling workfare.

Mumsnet seem to be ignoring it too, not posters, but this thread is huge and yet we aren't a discussion of the day.

MoreBeta · 18/02/2012 20:54

minimath - I definitley agree we should be getting rid of tax credits. It is a subsidy to employers. That needs to stop as well.

The Job Centre are LYING. Other "jobs" have been advertised in the same way.

molepom · 18/02/2012 20:58

Kate, read the spratacus report. Just google it and it will come up top of the list.

This was written by people with disabilities and those who are dying from terminal illnesses. On Twitter #spartacusreport and one of the founders Sue has been battling agaisnt these reform for well over a year now, even making themselves so ill they have had to go into hospital.

The report not only shows the flaws in the reforms but offers alternative solutions that will benefit EVERYONE more, the economy, the poilitions, the laws, everything using the systems already in place to a better advantage and SAVING the government money.

They have gaid a lot of support in the House of Lords, but the House of Commons and the government refuse to listen to either the public OR The House of Lords.

There WAS a petition to the Queen herself to stop these reforms, both welfare and NHS, but surprise surprise, the site has been hacked...there were signatures from not only the public, but Lords, doctors, those in High positions and even celebrities.

DorisIsWaiting · 18/02/2012 20:58

carernotasaint- I do think peopel were sold the line that this would be for the 'jobshy' (I do know they exist sadly my cousin is one). However I am also aware that there are many many many people in the current climate desperate for work.

Workfare should never have been rolled out to those on ESA, the current system of establishing suitability for work for those on ESA is not fit for purpose and workfare adds another layer to the pressure put on the disabled.

molepom · 18/02/2012 21:00

Morebeta - the tax credits are VITAL to me and to thousands of others. Getting rid of that will make things worse, not just poverty, destitution but the economy will suffer more as a result, how can we spend money if we dont have any? Those lucky enough to work are struggling with what little if any tax credits they do get, bills, mortgages, rents, gas and electric are constantly going up.

Nilgiri · 18/02/2012 21:08

Spartacus Report. I believe a couple of MNers helped with it.

And this is Sue Marsh blogging from hospital, which is where at least three Spartici ended up after pushing their bodies on to finish the report.

molepom · 18/02/2012 21:09

I believe they did Nil.

KateSpade · 18/02/2012 21:10

Are they getting rid of Tax Credits? Child or Working?

molepom · 18/02/2012 21:11

No Kate, it's a suggestion put forward by Beenbeta and...Minimath.

molepom · 18/02/2012 21:12

I agree with the logic behind the suggestion but there's no way of doing it without hurting lots of people who are already suffering.

Nilgiri · 18/02/2012 21:12

WTAF?! Work Programme contract bans charities from 'attracting adverse publicity' AngryAngry

"Charities and other groups delivering the Work Programme have signed up to a contract that says they will 'not do anything which may attract adverse publicity' for the Department for Work and Pensions, Third Sector has learned.

"The terms of the agreement also say prime contractors 'shall not make any press announcements or publicise the contract in any way' without approval from the department."

Tiredmumno1 · 18/02/2012 21:14

LAbaby, it is IMMORAL to make people work for less than NMW as well as everything else that has been listed on this thread. What happened to human rights?

molepom · 18/02/2012 21:14

Oh that's priceless Nil..copy and paste and go to FB and twitter with it, not to mention your MP's everyone.
